So what is the elements crafting system?
And Why call it elements?
As you all know in the real world materials like copper, iron, steel, silver and gold have different elemental properties like conductivity and resistance.Instead of iron being just better the copper like in the rpg world.
For starters lets say that conductivity = - mana cost ( as conductivity in the real world allows materials with the property to conduct energy and the more conductive is material the smaller the energy loss.) and resistance = + magic dps (resistance is the opposite of conductivity ,in that it slows or stops the conduction of energy, but allows the creation of energy charges that heat up the material allowing it to radiant heat.) .
Now lets put copper as our starting point and for the purpose of the example conductivity and resistance are the similar in numbers for it. Ok for the example will be crafting a magic staff. If you make it out of copper it will have a good amounts conductivity and resistance but a middle ground one.Ok lets say it made it this time of silver, now you more conductivity but less resistance than copper. But say didn't like the silver one so you made a iron one,now you have more resistance but less conductivity.
And it doesn't need to stop there.Resistance can also = - magic dps in armor. Also there are other properties like thickness and bending. Also many material have unique and interesting properties that can be expanded upon in fantasy and sci-fi.
If you have any ideas to add or improve on the idea don't be afraid to share it.

I would have to say that an overly complicated crafting system doesn't equate to a fun crafting system. Been playing Skyrim and was looking at the new expansion called Hearthfire where you have new crafting to build a house. This might not be that complicated, but it would be fighting with my gold resources to instead work on armor and other stuff. I was looking at gameplay video about the expansion for Skyrim and in these videos where people were working on the house they ran out of resources....
It might be realism your looknig for, but realism also doesn't equate to fun.
Most mmorpgs have some type of crafting system in place, and I have never heard of this elements crafting system in any of them.
Even in relatively simple recipes to craft things, they can be somewhat complicated because you probably don't have all the materials and have to figure out how to acquire them/where to get them.
One of the things I didn't like about Age of Wushu was that as a cook I was bottlenecked from recipes that required dungeon components to make food. Not fun to bottleneck me making food by requireing me to fight in dungeons, and using limited bag space for food components. suffice it to say I never bothered to make these items.
Alot of mmorpgs have pretty good crafting systems in place.

The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
SWG had this and in even greater detail.
Using your example, Conductivity went on order of best, Copper, Aluminum, Steel, Iron and could even be broken down to copper type. Polysteel Copper had super high conductivity and while Desh copper was better than Aluminum it wasn't by much. They actually had 12 different coppers when the game shut down, as many steel, multiple Irons and Aluminum.
Each week, the Polysteel and Desh and all of them would respawn with a new base name and the stats would change. So there were hundreds of Polysteel copper and each had unique conductive properties. Some people made it their job to just go around and look for new spawns, get samples and keep up to date data sites on current resource spawns.
People were always looking for the newest and best resource combinations for any of the thousands of schematic, recipes available for people to make. So you get an understanding of why some of us older gamers call bullshit on the 'crafting' we have now.
