What is localization?

Hello everyone!

I read AA forums from time to time and I get a feeling that some people don't get that Trion is not developing the game, but localizing it. Taken from Official FAQ on Trion's website:

 

How much control does Trion Worlds have over the development of Archeage for the West?
Trion Worlds is the publisher of ArcheAge in the West and we interact closely with XL Games, the developer of ArcheAge based in South Korea, to ensure that we publish a game that is true to the promise of the open-world sandbox we’ve all been waiting so patiently for. We work with XL Games to understand new features that are added to ArcheAge in the East to determine how well they will be accepted in our regions, and then offer feedback. XL Games has been fantastic in addressing that feedback as best as they can. In situations where a feature is added that we don’t think will be appropriate for our audiences, we work with XL Games to modify or remove that feature from our version.

What does “localization” mean in terms of ArcheAge?
ArcheAge’s localization involves more than just translation from Korean into English, French, and German! It’s also about tweaking the content to ensure that the lore and jokes are appropriate for Western audiences. Some of the jokes that make sense in Korea don’t translate that well for Western audiences, so we adjust them to keep the humor. One of the challenges with localizing from Korean is that the language structure is very different from English, French, or German. The game is localized into English first, and then the edited text is translated into French and German. It makes the whole process take a bit longer, but the result is so much better!

 

So please do not expect Trion to make big changes to the game unless it has to do with localization.

    I only expect some bugs to get fixed and etc. beyond that we just have to wait and see what XL comes up with.

    Keep the game as it is, don't try to change it 'more appropriate to western audience'.

    I would imagine it is more related to correct English text implementation. Like jokes, as they said in the FAQ.

    They've already done a video interview stating some of the changes they are making... just watch it and you will see that it's not going to be a carbon copy of the original.

    Doesn't "we work with XL Games to modify or remove that feature from our version." directly contradict your end statement?

     

    Also if you had watched any of the live streams they said they are not using features from 1.0 that were not popular with the eastern release in their western release.

    So I'm not sure what the point of your post was.

    I sincerely doubt that Trion will be given the right to change the source code or game design. That is usually not part of a publisher's role.

     

    What Trion probably meant with that statement is that they suggest to XLGames which features may not be ideal for western audiences, and XLGames then decide how easy and/or cheap it will be to remove or change those features.

    So I'm not sure what the point of your post was.

    You highlighted one sentence in the quote and then stated only the end part of it. Did you forget to read the first part?

    "So please do not expect Trion to make big changes to the game UNLESS it has to do with localization."

    So I'm not sure what the point of your past was.
