I guess Harry potter fans may have been dreaming this would happen almost did until EA games scraped the project... suckies.
Maybe if there was a big enough PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN from mmorpg fans maybe just maybe they might re-start the project again.

I've always played around with the though of a harry potter mmo. Heres how I think it should work:
You enter the game with your letter of invitation to attend Hogwarts, and after a short noob tutorial on you arrive at Hogwarts. (Dont forget your candy on the train, that stuff is good)
Now if you've read the books you know that the sorting hat picks which house you go to, without much decision making on your part. For the sake of individual character development I think every player should be given the option of which house to take. Each may have some innate advantages, but all would (should) be balanced.
Having an MMO entirely based around Hogwarts would no doubt be boring after a while, so I think you're stay at the school should only last so long. After aquiring all the skills you needed to be declared "fit" to graduate you would be allowed to leave the school, and continue your life into the "real" world. I decided against saying after a certain level you would leave, because I dont think it should be based on levels.
In my opinion this would be a great game to try an SWG like skill system (pre-cu of course) Where you could gain skills in certain masteries and it is completely cusomizable. Examples: Broomstick Riding Skills, Animal Training Skills, Dark Arts, Basic Magic, Herbology, Potions, etc..
Through a quiddich ring in there and you got yourself a half decent MMO.
But there seems to be a few drawbacks:
There isn't alot of information or lore if you will on the world outside of Hogwarts. (The wizzard world, the muggle (human) world is the normal one) I think the game would have to progress out of Hogwarts at some point and into the wizzard world. Alot would have to be made up here, which may or may not be good for those of you who are devoted to the series. This would have to be where a lot of the end game content is, and that makes it difficult, but it also adds a lot of potential because it isnt as limited as most other games based off of real life books/movies.
I also think that PvP, or RvR, or some type of player versus player action is necessary in games. There is obviously a duel system which is elaborated on in the books, but I think there should be more than that. During the timeline of the books there really arent all that many dark arts followers out there, and so a full fleged war between good and evil would be against the timeline. It might be cool to see a game set before the fall of Voldermort, during the dark times. I certainly would enjoy that But either way, I think one should have the option of following the dark arts.
Of course the one major drawback to this game, and we all know it, is that if made by a big name company (EA) it will be marketed towards the age group which has the largest concentration of fans, ages 10-13. That kills the game for just about all of us veteran MMO players. Although I think this game will never actually be made, if it did I would hope they could realize that a more mature MMO would be better.
The End.
As you can see I have put some though into this before (scary huh?) but thats my idea on it.
You sure thought that up. though with PVP i always thought of well the Quinditch world cup, and the huge chess board could come into it. it might never happen but we can still dream.
eh, i don't see it working
what are you going to do in the school? there's only so much you could possibly do...
If it was done right, it would be nice.
I could see it expanding beyond hogwarts. But then again you need to think otuside the MMO cookie cutter to make it work
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
to tell u the truth after i started reading the harry potter books i had the same fricken idea!!!!
but except not spreading out of hogwarts!!!!
all in hogwarts u can attend class but you dont have to or u can do quest and stuff and you gain cash ya to buy new wands etc...
sorting hats no way u could choose your own house otherwise there would be no humplepuff!!!!!!
and little ravenclaw!!! um hello!!!!!
just they would have 2 think of a way to keep it a ling time in hogwarts u dont gain levels bleh but go by years.. and spells and maybe a rank
except EA is 10 to 13 which would totally kill me.... because i wouldent survive that kiddish stuff really
anyways i would pay for it too !!!!!!
I would make sure as many copies of such a game were destroyed as possible, to save people from wasting their time.
Seeing that EA has the rights to produce Harry Potter related games, my hope for anything like this to work out has gone right down the toliet. EA is a company focused on money, they won't be willing to take uneseccary risks when they can just stick to games that they know will be cash cows. Sure the game will have the Harry Potter tag on it, but they are going to need a lot more then that to turn it into a thriving MMO, and from what I can see in EA's past they tend not to handle MMOs too well. *cough* Earth and Beyond *cough*
---War Kills---
---Peace Lives---
And that's coming from a guy with a Shadowbane sig.
I think this could work quite well, the one issue being community. The fact it's Harry Potter Online may make the little leet kiddies who are currently inhabiting Runescape and Habbo to leave their sucky web based games and play that. Ugh, *spine shivering*

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
I liked the harry potter like world for some strange reason however, I have no clue how it will be played as an mmorpg. With EA scrapping it, it will always just be a dream.

If they created servers for adults, I would buy it.

You made your own OS, and your 14? ... Can you smell that?
Smells like bullshit.
No longer visiting MMORPG.com.
LOL
EA sucks as a company. They are completely unwilling to take any risks anymore. Which is sad. They had a real winner in MPBT 3025. And with a little effort they could have turned Earth & Beyond into a huge success as well. Problem with EA is that from a management and development standpoint they have a console game mindset and the attention span of your average gnat.

A computer is not an Operating System.
Windows is an Operating System. Linux is, too.
A computer is called a computer. Or desktop. Or whichever.
Just getting rid of some misconceptions between you two.

Not that I liked the tone of Anageth's post but there is a vast difference between building a computer and writing an Operating System.

Can we get back to topic?
Like I said, if they made this Harry Potter Online game, then I will beta-test the game.
