The sad truth is, i can't remember one MMO with really a very good PvP system.. more or less all got some flaws, and some good points.
- DAoC
pro: good 3way RvR system, good PvP Dungeon; good group tactics
con: not enough impact from PvP on the world, not enough incentive to conquer or defend; dreaded class balance of all time
- Shadowbane
pro: good impact from PvP on the world; good group tactics
con: not enough economy; not enough of a living world or beside combat, large scall combat dominated everything, not enough small or even middle scale pvp; sb.exe crashes, bug ridden, bad graphics
- DF (more or less the same like Shadowbane.. just worst)
- GW1
pro: excellent group tactics, rather good group balance
con: no world whatsoever, no economy, nothing at all beside of group combat
- EvE
pro: good impact from PvP on the world; very good economy;
con: boring and rather slow combat; not enough middle scale pvp (either small or large, but almost never middle scale combat)
well.. i could continue the list.. but it does not get any better.
I will agree that Anarchy Online had the best PVP. You had level ranges so griefing was kept to a minimum. The tower battles were a ton of fun.
and and and so many cool features like ,someone from my team was flagged and got ganked, inside dungeon which was ToTW (hear me ESO). PVP allmost everywhere ,,and yes Notum Wars and land control = grazy fun * 42.

Nothing else I've played in the last 15 years comes close to either.

Early Star Wars Galaxies mostly because of the people. Walking a half hour across the desert to do epic battle with 50 or more of your friends was the shit.
I didnt play shadowbane or AC1....wish I could have at their peak. Although someone told me SB was click to move, which would be a heavy negative. I have really enjoyed darkfall and would rate that at the top. Cant beat the risk vs reward, consequences and skill level.

Yeah. Having a sandbox game with consensual PvP was great. People could have epic battles without bothering the non-PvPers and then do other stuff when they did not feel like PvP.
Star Wars Galaxies pre-CU: Jedi could destroy solo 1 vs 5 other players. This was balanced because it was very hard to unlock Jedi and then as a Jedi you risked perma death every time you PvP. It was high risk high reward PvP. No other MMO has come close to this. Also creature handlers were just fun.
Lineage II: Large Castle sieges actually meant something because the manor system is what controlled the economy. Guilds who controlled the keeps ruled over the game's economy. Best of all there were only player controlled factions. The open world was a complete Free For all no mans land.
Everquest and Everquest 2 PvP: Got to love the classics especially when fighting over contested raid bosses. Trying to kill a PvE raid boss while having to fight off PvP at the same time was some of the best combat oriented PvP ever done. PvP nerfs made this impossible after 2008.
Granado Espada: Best strategy game pvp because you control multiple characters and have coordinate with other people to control territory. Weekly colony war is a lot of fun. Pretty much the only PvP I still play.
i loved it. its some simple castle sige but old school 1 year challange to max lvl and no reskilling so having a good pvp character was alot of hard work and farming wasent much easyer cuze stuff u need like cards drops with ,01% in zones where only 5 of those mobs run around.

There's only one correct answer to this: Shadowbane.
1.Anarchy Online
2.World of Warcraft (Vanilla) world PvP

Well best pvp system has gotta be in the eye of the beholder for instance:
I play GW2 and I love the pvp in the game so much but is it the best because of this?
If I think hard on my list then for me it has gotta be like this:
1# Warhammer online - just loved my tank in the game
2# World of warcraft (vanilla) - and this only applies to the world pvp stuff when fighting around tarren mill
3# GW1
4# GW2
DAoC
Warhammer
ESO
Shadowbane
In that order. Everything else I have played is FPS arena style garbage or far too gear dependant
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
