You said it! That's really why I had the nice tingling feel in my neck from the first frame of the game. It's like more serious, not a place of peace, the creatures look pretty ugly in some place and everyone isn't a second Orlando Bloom like in EQII (yes, look at the face textures of those people!) or WoW. I think that DAoC is really more mature game, EQII is also a mature game, but It has a feeling that there's Forever Peace in the land and everyone's happy. Might be because I played Qeynos though. But DAoC really is easy game to learn, but the lands in it have depth and yes, it has that mythology what makes you always feel nice (especially the sounds!).
Yes, dark age of camelot is really darker than many MMORPGs. But there's opnions too in that, if you want a happier land, go to Hibs. *grins*
What server you play depends on what you are looking for. The best realm is Hib If you want a more casual experience with a lot of people play Gareth. If you want more content then I think Merlin is the largest of the regular servers.

Best realm is really just purely personal preference... They all have a different feel and the classes, while some share similarities, are very different. So I wouldn't pick a realm based on someone else's opinion. Sure start in one with folks you know from the site, a LOT of us are alb on Gareth for example, but once you are playing the game take the time to make a toon on various servers in the three different realms. Find the class you find the most fun and once you do stick with it. It took me, a returning vet, over a month to find my new favorite class. Now that I have I have completely restarted on Alb-Gareth as a Reaver with Taram so that my favorite 'name' is on my favorite 'toon'.
As far as community goes, contrary to the opinions of most of the posters I would have to say the community in the 3 realms is pretty much the same. The NEWBIE guild on Gareth is best in mid. But once you join a real guild the community is really no different on any of the realms. (Yes, I actually took the time to re-roll and level toons in all 3 realms up into their 20's on Gareth before settling on Alb-Reaver as my primary character.)
So my advice is: Find a CLASS you enjoy playing. Get to 20 or so Get into a REAL guild
Ignore the community in the newbie guild. It is a very transient community and, as such, is not representative of the overall community on the server. When you join a real guild be PICKY about it. Don't just join the first one that invites you. Do some research. Find one that looks like it will suit both your playstyle and your personality. I *NEVER* join a guild that doesn't have it's own forums or website (or both). EVER. Because without those you can't see the personality of the most avid players BEFORE joining. It's a crap-shoot. But if you can go peruse their message boards you can get a feel for the people who you'll be spending the most time talking to.
Just my take on the situation. No realm is any better than another. Pick the class that's the most fun for you and go based on that.

ok between Merlin and Gareth servers which is better between the 2?
If you want ToA content then go with Merlin. If you do not want/care about ToA then go with Gareth. That is about all I can tell you. You will find more people to group with at lower levels on Gareth, but there are still many people who start new on the regular servers including Merlin.
I do not like the Classic servers for many personal reasons. So, for me, I would go to Merlin. For other people it depends on the type of content you want.

im probably gonna pick merlin due to the fact i would like to see atlantis one day lol
ToA does look nice. Merlin will be easier if you can get into a good guild. I do not play on Merlin but a much smaller server so I do not know anyone on it. But if you want to go look for a guild and see the webpages of the larger guilds then go here:

I started on the Gareth Classic Server as a Albion and a ton of peeps always running around.
Alot of peeps are new and even alot of veterans starting new toons here. I cant speak much for
the hibs or mids, but I do know I get my you know what kicked in the BG. Unfortunatley I am
a late bloomer to DAoC, so dont know the game like the back of my hand yet.
Coming from a X-EQ player and Burned out on WoW repetitive BG instances at 60. This
game is a great change up for me since I am a casual player.

Well said HP.
