yur right..obli, / skyrim was a hit on consoles mostly and therefor you had TONS of kids / younger crowd scoop them up on their xbone n pos3 ..heck i bet they cant wait till it releases on console ..will prolly out sell PC version seeing alot of em dont keep up with the everyday info that most mmorpgers do on pc...once the ads start on tv for console release i bet it will be insane...wich is sad cuz imo morrowind was the best and may never see another game like it and done in that way..its all about quick sales nowa days on consoles n thats what obliv. / skyrim was

If skyrim never existed then ESO would get about 1/10 of the sales it got. TES was not a famous brand until skyrim. Skyrim was what WoW was to MMOs. It was something to help players get into that market. A majority of MMO players started with WoW now. Skyrim was a stepping stone into the Sandbox gaming for most players.
Not really. The TES games were very successful even prior to Skyrim. Morrowind and Oblivion did pretty well. And I hear Daggerfall and Arena did pretty well back in the days too.
WoW, had it's predecessors too. Warcraft 1 did well, Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 did incredibly well! Warcraft 3 was huge before WoW.
Yes they did well, they did not do great though. I started back with Morrowind as well as a ton of other people on here. But RPG players are not the norm. We are a small part of the gaming community. Skyrim brought in tons of players that have never even picked up an RPG before or RPG fans that were afraid of sandbox games. It brought in the masses.
Warcraft 3 was not big from WoW, the game came out 2 years before WoW did...WoW did so well because many players wanted to get into MMOs but were intimidated by how many expansions there were for EQ. The game didnt do a good job at getting new players after it was running successfully for awhile. WoW was the stepping stone into the MMO world, it allowed for an IP that was known with both starcraft and warcraft players, an MMO that was easy to pick up and enjoy without trying to learn how to play like EQ was. It did a good job at appeasing the masses.
I don't understand what you mean by "Warcraft 3 was not big from WoW". Where in my post did I say that WoW came before Warcraft 3? I am confused. Warcraft 3 was a massive success. Blizzard was very well known and had a huge fanbase BEFORE WoW was even released. Pretty sure most gamers knew Blizzard at the time, certainly way more people knew about Blizzard than EQ and other MMOs.
There are many reasons why WoW was successful. A lot of people on these forums argue that it was a simplistic version of EQ and that's why it was successfull. I completely disagree. This implies that EQ was better and a deeper experience than WoW which in my opinion is completely wrong. WoW was superior in terms of mechanics, presentation, delivery, game world, fun elements etc. EQ to me always seemed like a very basic version of WoW. The levelling was one crazy ass boring grind of mobs. It surely doesn't take a lot of design resources to just put endless numbers of mobs in a zone. WoW had a huge number of quests at launch. No other game comes even close to it. Cant' think of a single MMO which had even half the number of quests. Can't even think of a singplayer/multiplayer RPG that had even half of its quests.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
No, because one is an MMO the other is single player. ESO released almost exactly as I expected, even if a lot of people seemed to want Skyrim Online, which was pretty silly to begin with honestly.
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV Have played: You name it If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
Still using a broken VGchartz website to try to prove points. Tsk tsk, when will the MMORPG.com community learn that anything prefaced with www.vgchartz.com immediately makes your post dubious at best.
I guess if people are going to spread misinformation, there is no better site out there though!

They do but their player base is much smaller then the Elder Scrolls player base. FFXI and FFXIV are pretty niche old school games, I love them both, but they could never achieve a player base the size of Elder Scrolls in the modern mmorpg world. I think Yoshi sure is trying hard though and give him credit for trying.
The Final Fantasy franchise is bigger than Elder Scrolls. If you are talking just about MMOs (which you aren't because you're comparing to skyrim) I gaurantee ARR has (and will continue to have) more players than ESO

Agree, much as i like Elder Scrolls, i have been buying and playing Final Fantasy games much longer, and my first TES game was Daggerfall, way back when, although my personal favourites in the single player games, were FF VII and FF VIII. But yes, Final Fantasy is worldwide, a lot bigger than TES, and FFXI and FFXIV;ARR are both liable to have a higher population of players than ESO ever will, though its not based on the popularity of the titles, but how well made the games are. As for the Niche game comment, Eve Online is a niche game, mostly because its space ships orientated, but also because its so heavily PvP orientated, and thats why at best, imo at least, ESO will be a niche game, PvP centric games tend to be such things, it is the nature of the beast. Only, there are a number of PvP centric games out there, and some of them are not only better, but F2P, and that, is going to be a huge factor, especially when you consider that some of those games are also going to be on the next gen consoles too. ESO is also only 'borrowing' the TES IP, FFXIV;ARR and FFXI are games in the Final Fantasy IP. It really makes a lot of difference.
To the OP, that's why you still got some modders trying to enable multiplayer Skyrim. Skyrim has LOADS of potential that Bethesda could of taken advantage of, like releasing a Skyrim expansion with multiplayer functions and extra maps. That right there would of been the gaming business move of the decade. But no, instead we got another half finished MMO. Imagine the selling records if Skyrim were to be Expac'd ? It would of been glorious. We can only hope now that Bethesda learned from this experience and that the next Elder Scrolls won't be a MMO.
Skyrim was kept relevant so long after the initial release by the modding community. From bug fixes, interface fixes, combat and gameplay modifications and overhauls, visual upgrades and overhauls, it was the community that contributed to the continuation of Skyrim's popularity well past it's normal expiration date.
Too bad Zenimax can't rely on the community to fix ESO.
