To be botting you need a bot. A stone is no bot. Is that really so hard to grasp that it needs endless back and forth discussion? At the very least, agree to disagree and be done with it.
For the OP, it really shouldn't matter how the circle running is done, someone crazy enough to keep pressing the keys for hours on end, sleeping on the keyboard, jamming the keys with toothpicks, whatever. As long as there is no mechanic that makes it impossible - I liked the idea mentioned earlier of getting dizzy and falling off the horse - there will be people doing it.
Even with any countering mechanic in place some people will continue circumventing it, although likely fewer than at the moment.
Sense of Ethics seems to get worse as time goes on.
It has literally NOTHING to do with Ethics, if anything, it is extremely unethical of you to misuse a term repeatedly as a cry for attention to essentially mud sling a behavior you don't personally approve of.
The key part you don't seem to understand is the 'software' part.
The reason tooth picks in your keyboard isn't called botting is BECAUSE NO SOFTWARE IS INVOLVED!
You can't just start calling one thing, a different thing, because of the negative connotations attached to it, and pretend like you didn't do it. You did.
Again, not botting, stop making up things OP.
This is EXACTLY like when the media calls remote controlled helicopters 'drones'. It's just renaming something to scare people.
I said like ten times in this thread to change botting with Cheating or Exploiting.
But instead you guys attack me for using a word that means different things to different people, the word bot was not what my post was about, it is what you guys turned it into. Seems some people on this thread tried to explain why they cheat as well, shame on you guys.
BTW toothpicks can not play games, it takes a computer with software to connect to the internet and send input to a game, definitions are funny and I'm sure you can find more definitions that fit your needs somewhere else.
I'm done here now and feel Trion has done the right thing, if you believe other wise you can argue with someone else, I really do not care if you call running in circles on a horse Potato Salad it is about the Action not the name.
If you guys think game companies don't read these threads you are mistaken.
Gaming companies consider any button push that results in more than one action being performed as botting. Look up the TOS on all these games. It states it. Like I said earlier even having a macro that I push personally that performs more than one action, me pushing a button and using 2 spells, is botting. Now has gaming companies ever went after these people? No because its not a big concern to them, its only their to protect themselves if they need to go after these people for whatever reason.
Hmm, this all sounds familiar..... In EQ1 people would swim facing slighty upwards against a wall to level swimming. I don't recall this being gamebreaking. Though maybe I missed something. It sounds to me like the real problem is just location.
How does this affect anyone other than "Immersion". Because personally I find stupid names more immersion breaking than someone running their mount in circles. But Hell, what do I know. I just play the game.

I agree completely. If there are no real advantages gained, who cares. I also agree about the names. Though I can also live with it, it would be pretty cool to have some name enforcement. I remember Age of Conan and getting my name banned a couple times for being based on other characters (from books or movies) but they still allowed crap like bawl chawmper

complaining about botting? Yessir. Is there something...these days...you think is worse? Or maybe less and not worth the complaint?
Companies producing shit games would be my top complaint. Botting is close to the bottom of my list. If the botting is not destroying the game what does it matter? Many things in games are boring. Many people dont have time to do everything they want in a day. Botting for the most part doesnt affect anything but yourself, there are times that it does but for the most part it only affects you.
Playing the AH is more harmful than any bot could ever be, except maybe an AH bot...lol. You can completely change the prices by a pretty large margin when playing the AH.

I hear ya on the shit games.....BUT
Everything you said after is some opinionated spray of BS. Bots affect everything. Everything you mentioned after is subjective and crap.
The AH is PART OF THE SAME PROBLEM AS BOTS!
Get rid of the people/process behind botting and AH inflation and you have a better game.
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
Macros is botting. That isnt even a debate. If you read the TOS is says that you cant use automated programs such as macros. It says each press of a button means 1 action, if its more than you can be banned. I think this is bullshit, I use macros all the time to spam buttons while I actually control my character and everything but it spams 3 or 4 different buttons at the same time.
Even though macros is botting I also say who cares? These people raising their pets isnt destroying the game. Should I get banned because I use a button that triggers different spells? No, I feel the same for these people who make macros that continue over and over.
This is not like real bots that you have to purchase though. Those are more elaborate, they take information from the game and react to it. Reading all the information the game is giving and acting on it. There is a huge difference between these.
Macros is definitely not botting. At the very least they are not handled the same way by mmorpg developers. Take for example the other Trion game, Rift, and it's extensive list of macro abilities. I'm pretty sure they do not condone botting in any shape or form, while macroing is allowed and even encouraged. All within the game parameters of course.

In the case of Trion in general and Rift specifically, what you mentioned does not apply. Macroing several actions in a single key is a legit approach. There are other games that do not permit the use of macros and they are very clear about it. Those who do, usually also give the parameters of what is acceptable and what isn't.

Its not subjective. People who play the AH can and do, make a bigger impact on the economy of a game than any botter. I use to play the AH and I know how to jack prices up and control the entire market of certain items. This of course takes tons of gold to do but can be done if you know how to do it and results in so much more money it isnt funny. But it takes a shit load of time and patience.

Still not true. Look up their TOS I guarentee Rift says the same thing like most other companies do. WoW allows macros to be made in game as well, they still say in their TOS that 1 button push must equal 1 action. Like I said, its to save them if they need it later which someone exploiting something that they havent thought of yet.
I guarantee Rift wouldnt like it if I used my razer naga to sit somewhere and play a macro that would continually target something and kill it that I can push once and leave over night with one button push. I could level up over night with it, not very efficient but still more xp without me being at the keyboard. Now do you think my macro that can target people and then kill them for extra xp wouldnt get me banned? Because people are banned over this.
Here is the bottom line in regards to everyone calling horse leveling botting/cheating/expoilt ect.
What are the two intended ways to level your mounts in Archeage.
1. By running/riding the mount - This gives a set amount of exp at intervals to level up the mount.
2. PvE combat, while your mount is actively out and you are killing mobs/creatures, it gains a set amount of exp just like you do.
If a player is running his mount in a circle, he is doing option 1, which is the intended method of leveling. It doesn't matter if he jams a quarter in his keyboard to run in a circle, he/she is leveling the mount as the game designed it to be leveled.
What does it matter if this player rides the mount back and forth from 2 major cities for 10 hours straight or runs it in a circle for 10 hours straight. It doesn't; it is the same thing.
What people are complaining about really is the method at which a player chooses to run his mount. Do I really care if player A wants to go to sleep with a quarter stuck in his keyboard so his mounts is still gaining exp while he isn't watching his computer, no not really.
That is Player A's account, and I have no say over how that player conducts his business. That players mount has no affect on my game play what so ever.
This all boils back down to reality vs virtual perspective of gaming, or immersion if you will. Players take video games, and let me emphasis those words again "video games", way to serious. It is a game that you play to waste time, not LARP in. If someone running in a circle in a game brings you physical pain, then you have a lot more to worry about in your life.
Just play the game and enjoy it, or don't. I personally hope these players do not, Archeage will be better without them.

Please go to Google and type "define botting." Also the whole argument about if it's a rock it's not considered botting, are you even serious?
Any automated gameplay not requiring your input is against pretty much any TOS. Be it a program/bot/rock.

Good luck with this one OP,
You have an uphill battle here. You have to fight against:
"I just spent $150.00, there is NO WAY this game is going to have major problems"
I saw the same things when STO and TSW were still in development and the people who paid for life time subs didn't make a mistake then either.
I hear ya on the shit games.....BUT

Right.
So, I assume, thread over until we know their policy on it in live.
Or are we up for another 50 pages arguing about a word? Because that always goes well and changes people's minds.
