Online rants do more bad than good???

kakasakikakasaki Member UncommonPosts: 1,205

I came across these article (and other like it) while randomly surfing the web:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/webs-influence/201303/angry-why-rant-sites-may-do-you-more-harm-good

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/03/130312121739.htm

After I read it, I couldn't help but think about the community in this little web site we all love to frequent. Kinda explains the tone of the conversation around here the level of hostility...

Anyway, though it was a curious read.

" What’s unfortunate is the fact that these sites are, ironically, more likely to make you feel worse in the long term. And with most users posting anonymously, the resulting vitriol is likely to be much more toxic that what you’d expect were users posting with their real identity."

    Bingo

Whats the purpose of ranting? Want others to agree? Want to feel like you're not alone in your thoughts? Ranting on site will never EVER resolve your issues. Why do it?

I agree with your assessment Zod. The thing is, people will label this as just complaining about complainers I guess. It's a never ending cycle of negativity it seems.

They are all legitimate questions, I am interested in what people's response to them would be. It would be good if some people who constantly bash things rather than articulate their points in a meaningful way could answer these questions I think. Maybe give us an insight on how or why they think it helps them and others in the long run?

Healthy, reasonable and civilized debate is not the issue. The point of sites like this are for people to express their ideas/opinions. The issue is with the constant vitriol and "hate" that serve no other purpose than to demean and belittle other posters. I will never understand people that feel the need to keep posting constant negativity about a game the have already expressed they don't like, no longer play and will never play again. To each their own I guess but the articles are correct to link this to some sort of impulse control problem...

Well, full disclosure and all... I was guilty of the same thing concerning a certain game on here. But I realized what disservice I was doing to the people that liked the game by continuously griping about a game I no longer played and my constant flaming and belittlement said more about me than it did about the game...

However, I still feel my constant bashing of Dark&Light was justified in light of the product they put out and the questionable morals of the developer... Hypocrite, I know. image

I think we have all been guilty of this at some point or another to some degree. I will readily admit I have done it before, and even felt bad afterwards. A lot of time when you speak from the heart out of passion for something you want to succeed, things can go a little too far, especially if it wasn't the game you really wanted and expected.

Honestly, I find a lot of the people who come here to be batshit crazy in a lot of ways.  A lot of you are dumb, a lot more are like babies in your level of selfishness and a lot of you are just plain assholes who don't give a crap about what you say or do in public or who's watching when you say or do it.  I don't mind it though, nor do I mind the anonymity or at least the "assumed" anonymity, because it allows people to get closer to saying what they really, really, want to say or doing what they really, really want to do.

Having information like that available to hear and see is priceless compared to the real world two-faced, back-door way of doing things, and plus it gives people a real chance to open up real dialogues with one another for anyone watching to see, think about, and come to their own conclusions about.

The way I see it, bitches are gonna bitch, whether its on the internet or in their spouses/friends/sibling/strangers ears.  It's what bitches do and there are a lot of bitches out there.  And I mean a LOT.  The best thing we can hope for then is to actually find a bitch that is bitching about something that we know something about, that way we can at least talk to them about what they think back and forth until we figure out whether their complaint is something real or just some side effect of their bitchiness, and not just tune them out like we would in real life when the bitch is talking about something that we absofreakinglutely do not care about.

Forums then, give us a pathway to herd all the bitches into one place so that we can at least, to some degree, stay on topic.  Sure, I know that I personally will stray off into all kinds of crap in the middle of a conversation about an MMORPG, but I promise you that no matter what that thing that I stray off into is, it still has to do with the topic that I am talking about in SOME kind of way, at least to me.  I just have a habit of rolling deep sometimes is all.

Cause that's how I roll....I ROLL DEEP!!! - (The Other Mans)

Better though that we all huddle up into a few places dedicated to what we are talking about though than to wander around in the outside world all pissed off about something that not a single person we know even gives a shit about, because that's is more often the case than not, because when it's like that we never get to resolve our crap whether we ride a bicycle or not.

And a special note.  If you are an asshole and you ride a bike, you are still going to be an asshole after that bike ride is over.  A forum can help FIX an asshole.  A bike can only pacify one until the next time they feel like being an asshole.

And for those of us that rant and rant only to get schooled by the community on how stupid we are thinking or how wrong we are about a thing or even get ignored but still have what we thought at that time written down for the sake of returning to years later to see how immature or backward thinking we were at the time, I can believe it to be nothing but therapeutic on the whole in comparison to walking the world forever wrong and truly forever alone.

So all of that to say that I think that article is bullshit.  And that is in my own words, not the same words that I usually use to post or blog on this website.  (Because unlike some other posters, I can post with an English Accent! - Paraphrased from Robin Hood Men in Tights)

Edit ( Also, I think that whole movement against anonymity is just the attempt of those who are strong in the physical world to try and strong arm those who are strong in the electric one.  Don't give in.  Whatever we do or say here, these are just thoughts, just words.  Don't do dumb shit because of them and dumb shit won't happen.  Make it your rule then to only try to take GOOD advice from the internet.  You can do enough dumb shit all on your own without our help.)
