Question about cross-play

I'm interested in possibly playing this game, but I'm a bit confused about how cross play works. I'd like to play the PS4 version but don't currently have a PS4. However, if I were to buy a PS4 version could I use it to register an account and then download the PC client from the website and play on my PC using that account until I decide to buy a PS4?

Thank you

Yes, but have to buy it on both systems

Thanks for the answer, but that seems awfully strange. Generally buying an MMO is buying the right to make a subscription. Why is the client available on the website if that's the case?
  • Thing is, when you buy the game for a given platform, you're given the right to play on that platform, thus, buying the PS4 version will only give you access to the PS4 client and the PC version will only give access to the PC client.

And reason for why the client is available for download? It's quite practical for PCs without a disc drive :)

To add to above, the PS3/PS4 versions are a bit different since you can "upgrade" from the PS3 version to the PS4 version for free. PC and PS3/PS4 versions are separate however.

I understand that, I suppose, though it`s honestly quite annoying and seems to be an attempt to squeeze more money out. Either way, I suppose I`ve got my answer now, so thank you!

Edit: I do have another question, actually: if I were to buy the Collector`s Edition for PS4 and then buy the PC version from steam, could I use the security token that comes with the PS4 CE on the PC version? Or are they different tokens as well?

    Thank you

The security token is account specific, so it'll work regardless which platform you play on.

As far as having to buy it twice, it's just like any other game that releases on multi-platforms.  It's like buying Dark Souls 2 for PS4 then expecting not to have to buy the PC version if you want to play that.

Think of it like an xbox 360 and ps 3 version. I had to buy FFXIII twice because I wanted the better graphics for my PS 3.  Good thing it was a used copy.

Add to which, the standard PS3 version can be had at practically bargain-bin prices now (currently a fiver on Amazon UK for example).

I'd like to add that if you have a PS3 you can pick up a copy for that system and if in the future (before Dec 31) you purchase a PS4 you can convert FF14 to the to that console free. This is what I did.  Also Steam has had FF14 50% off within the last 2 months pick up the CE version for the PC when that happens and find a new copy of the PS3 version somewhere in a bargain bin . Save yourself some $$. Cross platform play is awesome I love sitting in my recliner playing on my 60" tv then jump over to my PC when kids want to watch movie or whatever.
