Is there a company that can make an mmo with payment method of only donations? Is it even possible for a company to be confident enough about their game to give it for "free" and not that F2P BS, and see if people would pay any amount of money to keep the game going without getting something in return other than funding a game they love. Would people even play it or pay any amount?

I am pretty sure you will never see this happen.

This will be f2p but not the crap f2p you are used to. the option is also there to subscribe.(of course)
Why would it be impossible?
Developing and maintaining games costs a ton of money. Stop being cheap. People deserve to get paid for the hard work and long hours.
Why would people give large amounts of money to fund this game? People like to feel that they get a good return on their money, and that would never be possible with a game like this. It would require that the few who do pay, to pay huge amounts, with no direct input, or return.
The issue isnt that someone couldnt make/publish a game like this. It is that there is not enough money available to make it happen.

Yeah, Planeshift is a great project that has been around for a very long time. It has a great supportive community.
As for voluntarily donating money...just about every Emulator project requires donations to continue their expansion and maintenance. SWGemu, EnB-emulator, MxOemu, etc. are all supported via donations.

It is not a viable business strategy. Keep in mind that even single player games these days can easily cost into the millions of dollars, with MMOs being into the tens to even hundred million dollar range. That is a LOT of money to invest and take a risk on. I don't expect anyone to risk that much on a gamble that people would repay it through charity, even if the game was really good.
However, there are a lot of F2P titles that do offer fair models, only cosmetic items and minor boosts. I think that's cool. Though I personally wonder if they truly make enough money in this model. I'm more partial to standard subscription models myself. $15 is not much money a month, and for that you get access to all content, and no one can even buy cosmetic items which means that crafting is more valuable ( a lot of people want gear not just for stats but appearance too.. myself included).
F2P isn't bullshit. If you're a Min/Maxer or hardcore 18 hour a day gamer who insists to have access to the best items and content available then it might APPEAR to be bullshit to you. But for the many millions of gamers not like you, F2P is downright the best thing to ever come to gaming.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
