Hi, I played WoW the first week it came out, but had to pack it in as I moved hosue and lost my connection. I did get to level 60 so did MOST of the game. However, I am thinking of taking it up again, with 4 of my friends. The problem is, they are very NOOB, so its going to be more of a case of me showing them everything and babysitting them around the game for the first 20 levels or so. We are thinking of going Alliance, so can people please recommend a good varied group that will be able to take on most instances. We will probably be going PvE with a little bit of BG, but are mainly interested in instance play.
We are
1. Me - Main Group Leader - bit of everything, but probably will want to tank and lead the way.
2. Big Ste - Prefers brawlers
3. Little Ste - Prefers sneaky characters
4. Len - Hes an engineer, and would love an intricate character with a lot of thought.
5. Mike - Damage
These are rough guides to preferrence, but what would be the perfect 5 man group. If people have time, then perhaps can you suggest the perfect 5 man Horde Group.
A lot to ask I know, but thanks in advance...
Hux

Alliance/Horde
1. Protection specced Warrior/same: Can't really go wrong with it. Secondary spec is left open, good to have 10 points in arms for Tactical Mastery (even if you do not need so much in instances is a lot of fun) and 5 points in fury for cruelty (+5% critical is a lot).
2. mmmh. a brawler? Alliance side i would say a Fury/arm specced warrior or a combat rogue. Horde side i add Shaman specced in the combat abilities (forgot the name of it... Enhancement maybe)
3. sneaky characters eh? NE rogue./ Any rogue
4. mmmmh. intricate character? hard to understand what he means by that... but you NEED an healer. So.... Priest with engineering profession or druid (restoration specced) with same profession
5. Damage eh? Well, you have a rogue already, so coices are Hunter, Warlock or Mage. Hunter would take advantage of your priest/druid engineering (but nothing stops him getting it as well so...) and they are also good at PvP but... maybe for instances a Warlock is better. Same for Horde
There you are. Feel free to ask questions, clarifications or anything else

Cheers for that. I think I will add a mage for 5.

1: Main tank: Warrior
2: Second tank: Hunter
3: Damage: Mage
4: Main heal: Priest
5: Backup heal: Druid
There is no "perfect" group for every situation in the game. I mainly join pick-up 5-man groups and we make do with whatever classes we have. These are a few tried-and-true formulas on the alliance side (obviously, the skill and level of the character also has an impact):
Normal 5-Man PvE
Main Tank: Warrior
Offtank1/Backup Heal: Paladin or Druid
DPS/Crowd Control: Mage or Rogue
DPS2/Offtank2: Warlock or Hunter
Main Heal: Priest or Rest. Druid
Undead/Demonic Environments or Instances:
Main Tank: Warrior or Tank-Build Paladin
Offtank1/Backup Heal: Paladin
DPS/Crowd Control/Offtank2: Warlock
DPS2/Crowd Control: Mage
Main Heal/Crowd Control: Priest

Perfect team for me would be
Priest/: Healing no dmg unless needed
Warrior: Controling aggro
Rogue: Dps/Dmg
Warlock: SS for the priest incase your team wipes
and either mage/hunter sheep is good but a warlock can charm priest can charm/shackle
the hunter is good for priests that dont want all there healing on cloth hunters die a little slower so it depends with these two
But from the list above that you have lil comments next to i came up with this 5man
1. Warrior (controling Aggro)
2. Druid (DPS/DMG/Healing)
3. Rogue (sap/Dps/DMG)
4. Rogue/Hunter (sap/DMG jumper Cables incase you guys wipe)
5. Paladin/ShadowPriest (Your Main Healer/DMG)
two rogues in a group that know what they are doing is really awesome
Ideally, you would want some kind of fail-safe system that can correct itself if one member drops the ball. So basically, it is good to have a main tank and off tank, or a primary and secondary DPS, and a primary and secondary healer. That's where hybrid classes are really useful.
A warrior can (and often does) lose aggro, so a druid, paladin, or hunter/warlock pet to offtank would be good. A primary healer might not be able to keep up with heals if the group starts to fall apart. A paladin, druid, or shaman could step up if necesary. As far as DPS, maybe the mage gets silenced, or the rogue gets slept -- in that case a secondary DPS is great to keep some damage flowing.
Most often, you're stuck with whomever you can pick up to go into a 5-man situation. But basically if you can cover all bases with secondary backup, I think you're golden.
Yes there is a perfect 5 man group for every situation.
It's called
1.Warlock
2.Warlock
3.Warlock
4.Warlock
5.Warlock
You know what they say, 60% of the time, it works everytime.
1. Warrior, hold aggro
2. Paladin, help hold aggro, heal and protection
3. Druid, help hold aggro, heal and buff
4. Mage, sheep, nuke, nuke
5. Priest, heal and fear
Warrior
Paladin or Shaman
Mage
Priest
Rogue
Perfect group....

LOL. I don't blame you for saying that, because warlocks are one of the most useful classes all around - they even have some basic healing ability. I actually instance with 2 warlocks repeatedly, and fill the remaining spots with either a mage (for water) or some kind of extra tank. In underwater environments you definitely want a warlock.
