What a Waste

LerxstLerxst Member UncommonPosts: 648

When I start up an MMO and I see super detailed cut scenes, professional voice-overs and details and animations for characters I will most likely outgrow and never see again after the first 10 levels, i just think "What a waste".

The "good" (as in classic) games never relied on any of these things and if they were there, they took a backseat to the gameplay. Even WoW, for as much as it destroyed the genre, didn't rely on these things upon its release. Moreover, the better games like EQ ,DAoC and AC had almost no specialized eye-candy that took half a team of people days to develop. Talking NPCs consisted of text boxes that took less time to write than this post has. Special characters were given the same level of detail, animation and resources as every other character in the game.

Right from the start, Wildstar showed me how much it failed in this aspect. The entire starter area could be summed up by a few lines of text you get form an NPC in a game like DAoC. Instead, Wildstar actually devoted resources, time, production, money and staff to creating these vivid characters, animation and cutscenes you're exposed to just in the tutorial section.

Honestly, it's the producers' failure. They could have taken those resources to extend the overall content of the game, introduce a new... crafting system or something similar, create a couple new dungeons, revamp the PvP aspect of the game or something... anything really. Nope. They just took the same thing we've all seen for the last decade and made it look prettier.

In other words...

What the hell is this Mickey Mouse bullshit of a game I just wasted an hour of my life on?

Obligatory question:  how far did you actually get before you came here and post this "review"?

    Raquelis in various games
    Played: Everything
    Playing: Nioh 2, Civ6
    Wants: The World
Anticipating: Everquest Next Crowfall, Pantheon, Elden Ring

Tank - Healer - Support: The REAL Trinity

In all honesty ...this is exactly what people were asking..Why should he as a gamer wait till later part of the game to start having "fun" ?

Because then we will complain about having no challenge getting to endgame.

On a serious note. Wildstar doesn't try to hide what it is, its using a method that has been proven to work in the past if set up well enough. In my opinion its honestly the best theme park game I've played since WoW. Speaking as someone who has been playing this since about last Novemberish. So the hype has been gone from me for quite some time.

I'm happy to say that I still enjoy it.

    It is what it is.

I couldn't stand the game. I think I got to level 10 or 12 before I got so bored of it. The combat, which I'd hoped was going to be its saving grace, was awful. It was floaty, no "impact"/feedback and felt just.. bad. ArcheAge is a better MMORPG.

I really wish this wasn't the common theme I see on these forums. This post was lengthy giving the impression of substance and objectivity but after actually reading through it appeared to be more of a troll from someone who had spent an hour or less with the game.

In your post you mention that you would prefer they remove the character development and lore they put into the early game that bores you for more dungeons and content; however, aside from the fact that some people enjoy lore and cut scenes (they are also completely skippable) this game is releasing with 2 more instanced dungeons than any of it's direct competitors at launch and for most through their first year of play. (yes ESO has a ton of "public" dungeons and TSW had an equal amount of dungeons at release but it is very niche)

If developers can't make a game fun at level 1, then why should I pay for level 1? I pay for entertainment. Made it to level 16, still wasn't having fun. Just my experience, but not worth it to me.

Blame it on the Dev's and this generation of mmo players who are afraid to read text.  If it doesn't have high priced voice acting then the game sucks. Look how much money ESO spent on It and still the game came out crappy. I remember  playing Anarchy online back in the day. Zero cutscenes and voice over was just hello with only a few npc's, but the game was amazing because money went into content and the game world.

It seems to me that people have forgotten what MMO's used to be like. It was about the reward at the end of a long journey, not some instant gratification that way too many people think they are entitled to.

Maybe the early game is boring to some, but it is what you make it. Wildstar is just like other themepark games, most consider the end to be the most worthwhile, but in all honesty I have not enjoyed questing this much in a long time.

There are only so many ways that they can create a leveling system. I think they did a pretty good job of it. And a /clap to those who have been able to keep their patience all these years to get to the awesome stuff.

Its how you play the game. As I can assure you, low levels in WoW/Everquest and UO were not amazing and filled with epicness on their release day. You had to get to the good stuff with a lot of work.

Level 1 = tutorial, in every game, ever. Asherons Call? Punch bandits in the face. Dark Age of Camelot? Punch crabs in the face. WoW? Punch some critters in some guys pumpkin field in the face. level 1 is never "fun", its the introduction of whats possible.

Now if you got to 16 and youre still not having fun, then thats a very good try at the game and if its not your cup of tea then hopefully something else will scratch your itch!

The funny part about your post is that I disagree, while I have EQ1 on my other monitor. It doesn't take award winning quests to make a good game. A good game is fun to play, no matter what in-game activity you are doing.

Old movies were black and white and had no CGI. Earlier movies did not rely on things like sound.

Doesn't make them all good or better than what's offered today.

But games have been fun to play at level 1. Why not make your tutorial fun? A game is for entertainment. That is it's only purpose to an end user. It is a developers job to maximize its effectiveness.

Exactly. Get to the treasure at the end of the rainbow. The problem folks have is that they are tired of the journey to the end. They just want the end and when the beginning isnt the end (obviously) they whine and complain. Truth be told folks are just tired of mmos but dont want to give up on the genre because they keep looking for that ONE game that will re-kindle the feelings they had when they played their first love. But that will almost never happen.

You're exactly right, you shouldn't pay for it if you aren't enjoying it. The follow up question for people who didn't have fun, is why is the game so important to them, that they need to run back to gaming sites and try to convince other people that they won't have fun and shouldn't pay for it. Seems like an extended amount of effort to go through vs just moving on and letting other people draw their own conclusions.

Why not make the tutorial fun? Simple, because its over in MINUTES and to spend a lot of time and effort on something thats over with so quickly would be a crime. I and I think most reasonable people would rather see the dev spend effort on what folks will spend the most time on, the end game.

Age of Conan focused on the beginning and left the endgame entirely incomplete. Warhammer focused on the beginning and left the endgame a buggy mess. Lessons learned here I hope!

The beginning just needs to be simple so folks arent overwhelmed and confused. Slowly drag them in and then (hopefully) get them hooked.

And that is precisely the reason for bad reviews. It isn't worth it? In a market as thick as MMOs, you need every advantage. It's over in 5 minutes? Make it an AWESOME 5 minutes. That is what can make it special.

Sorry, it's the same old song with every new release. This game will be awesome to those who already love it, and those that just want the attention will come here and act like professional gamer's and slam it.

I wish new releases were like a food you didn't like. You would not eat it and not go around complaining about it to everyone.

    I think thats the problem.

A lot of older gamers actually remember what MMO's used to be and it had nothing to do with getting to the end of the journey. MMO's initial philosophy was designing virtual worlds, they werent quest hub oreintated with a raid end game. However, thats what MMO's have become which is why many are turning the other cheek on this title.

In my opinion, this game is great for people who got involved with MMO's within the past 5 years or so. If you havnt been exposed to too many MMO's, theres a lot to offer with Wildstar. Like everyone has been saying, this game never claimed to break the mold, theyre just giving what MMO gamers have been playing in a much hard core manner.  Problem is, a lot of MMO"s have danced around the same logic.

Some of us, well a lot of us, have moved past it which would be games that people who play Wildstar just think suck :)

To each their own, I'll play wildstar, I'll sub for a while but I get why not many people are gonna get turned on to it. Its just way too familiar.

Play the tutorial for TERA. I dislike the game, but it is one of the best tutorials I have seen. I am not saying it will please everyone, but they certainly tried to make the tutorial more than 5 minutes of boredom.

So seriously, try to know what you're talking about before you start spouting hate about a game.  The developers know what they're doing, they're a lot more skilled and knowledgeable about the genre than you are; so they don't  need to be told what works and what doesn't work.  The only "waste" here is this thread in wasting time to read and respond to it...

Only MMO I've really enjoyed since WoW was GW2 and they didn't make me wait, and I didn't have to come to these forums and ask when combat stopped being slow-paced garbage (TERA I'm looking at you).  It's not a coincidence to me.

But flame the OP for finding fault early on instead of later when he realizes it's another gear treadmill.  At least he saved his own personal time.
