[Column] Star Wars: The Old Republic: New Roadmap, Adjusted Timeline, PTS Goodies

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Last week, Star Wars: the Old Republic's Senior Producer Bruce Maclean published his revised roadmap for the Summer of SWTOR.  In it, he outlined the new plan for Game Update 2.8, now due for June 10.  Couple that with his previously-published Producer Letter announcing the delay of the Galactic Strongholds expansion and the reasons for it, we have an overall message that they believe players would rather see a much bigger up-front expansion rather than trickling new features and updates along the road piecemeal.

TOR is fun to play, but disappointing to read about. Funny thing.

TOR and TSW are my two go to games while waiting for the Repopulation, and Wildstar. Double xp time are good there.

I wonder what role the cartel market will play in the galactic strongholds expansion. I have a feeling players will be spending a lot of money in the cartel store to decorate their strongholds.

I might sub to this game. Have not played it in a long time.

They haven't said that the RotHC style expansion has also been delayed. In-fact they have ditched releasing a new ship class in GSF especially so they can concentrate on it. It could well end up coming out in Jan-Feb though but they did say this year. We shall see.

As to that gamer you where talking to well I was pointed to a very interesting reddit webpage written by swtor-miner , it goes into *spoiler* details of the percentage chances of the slot machines mined data on the PTS. A very good read. OFC I won't go into the details here as it obviously is filled with potential spoilers so I will let whoever is interested go read it themselves. What I can say is , I'm not sure if both factions can be in the same casino at the same time ( as they have different names for the same casino , timeline ? ) but if the bounty contract week happens within the nightlife event then it is going to be a whale of a time. In fact I wish I was on a PVP server just for it.

nice little things are coming, but, well, their are still little. nothing that will keep people bond to the game longer then one or two months. sw:tor needs a major content update. but unfortunatly the game isn't build for this.

The game is build for it! But the problem is that so many People were laid off before the first summer after release, that they just don't have the Resources for it anymore to pull it off!

It's the exact same thing With Funcom and TSW and AoC. They only have one live team left that has to manage all Funcom games.  Hence, why Tokyo in TSW has been delayed so many times now. /Shrug

Still the 1 thing that will make me sub again is extending the class story-lines.  They were AMAZING but Bioware has just let them fizzle and die at 50.

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

I will proudly say that I am playing SWTOR after not giving the game a fair shake months ago.

That's good to hear , it's a great game , a little short for one character ( I'm used to level 200 or 180 caps ;/ ) but still great. I am getting to a point where I can relax a little and do more of what I want on the game. Almost there , only 3 characters that aren't maxed out of 16. PSO2 and SWTOR will be my bread and butter for a while :). Not long to go now.

back in  Q2/2012 when all the server merged and F2P was coming like doomsday because of not much to do etc.

I knew it will take until version 3.0 until it recovers and fills the content gaps

now with the housing and galactic star fighter they have enough solid foundation to build upon for the next year.

what I really would like to see would be a speeder revamp so it is more fun to drive them, also speeder customization (mods, motors, colors,..) and planet day night cycles. Also revisit the old planets and make them bigger, get rid of exhaustion zones etc.

Still, I'd prefer if Tor was a coop multiplayer with an ultra strong singleplayer instead of this...failed MMO. Now, I don't like to talk in others' behalf, but I have a hunch that well over 75% players wouldn't even see a difference. Besides the stronger focus on narration of course. I am talking about the MMO staples being removed: ever respawning mobs(my pet peeve is when the mob respawns right in front of you-oh golly gee am I making impact or what :P), idiotic FedEx tasks(won't call them quests. Period.), forced mechanics etc.

I'd like it how it is if only I could take three(3) companions out with me. In that case MMO parts wouldn't even bother me(respawn times are just right in Tor, side quests can be skipped etc).

    Please Bioware?

It's very easy to play SWTOR like a coop game like we do here most of the time. Aside from doing missions and the like, there are heroic quests on every map that require 2-4 people to complete together which give extra rewards/ XP. You can also participate in each others quests including sharing all the cut scenes together with your full player models and all, including storyline quests.

Sure we are still doing a lot of staple MMO activities like fetch quests together, but the lore/story/cut scenes make you feel a little better then a wall of text about fetching some more pelts.

Yeah I pre-ordered the CE played for a month and came back last weekend (?) when they offered the extra coins and double XP.  Re-rolled all my toons too after seeing I had them all spread out when the servers were merged, whenever SWTOR did that.

    So far having a blast.

I really love SWTOR. Some time was constantly devided between my long years love Wow and Swtor. In Swtor love more lore ... but as complete package Wow is still supperior. Currently playing for last half year WOW, but next for sure will be SWTOR. Or maybe Wildstar if I will stay enough long with Wow. Will see. For Gw2 lost my grip. For Wow is strong as day 1 with original release. Same with SWTOR.

But calling anything beyond Rise of the Hutt Cartel "expansion" is very bold from them. Even Makeb was kind'a half expansion, all other could in best case scenario been called PATCH. At least so it is in majority of other games. In wow we have PATCH 5.4 and not EXPANSION 5.4.

I have leveled nearly all alts for both factions, did some end game .... but what I need now (and I'm sure many other players as well) is TRUE expansion. No tricks PATCHES being "sold" as expansions. Very cheap.

    ha, this ^

so true, what else does this game need than a four player co-op mission mode,

Flashpoints and heroics would be easily covered by that mode.

Instead the open world is messed up with all the respawning, static world you can't change and typical MMO immersion breaking problems.

I barely even see anyone when going down to a planet, the whole thing could be single player quality persistant, with drop in co-op. So why is it an MMO , just to have the lag of 100 people on fleet? Even that would work if it would be some sort of lobby for a single player game/ co op game.

I think Battlefront 3 and that other SW game will do everything differently

*waves hand* "This is not the game you are looking for". In all seriousness though a game comes out with the criteria you have both just mentioned on the 29th of May, it is called PSO2 - look to the relevant section on the forums. Honestly it is exactly how you both described your desired game and it's a sci-fi game.

O and more on topic , two jackpot awards have appeared on the swtor site , one is like a flash gordon 50's - 60's style vehicle and the other a RANCOR ! Get in!

    Cheers,
