Origins Of Malu: Both F2P & Subscription to Be Added

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Origins of Malu site has been updated with the news that both subscriptions and free to play options will be offered to players. The subscription amount has yet to be determined but, in an interesting twist, any F2P player purchasing something from the item mall will also be given a limited amount of subscription time as a bonus.

F2P - Free to play if you wish

  • Limited life's per day (Number not determined yet), you will be able to purchase life's if you run out.

  • Perma-Death possible if you play beyond your allotted life's if you dare..

  • Possible Ad's (on first loading screen only)

  • No content restrictions at all

  • Micro-transaction's of any kind will grant you a sub for a time period pending the amount of the purchase

Subscription - Prefer traditional here ya go

  • Low monthly fee (Not yet determined, but it will be small)

  • Micro-transaction bonus, you will get a little more for your bang

  • Special bonus's to make life a little easier such more frequent use of utility items.

Contents of Store - Not Complete

  • Housing Pieces

  • Vanity gear items only

  • Life's - for F2P

  • Vanity Pets

  • Merchandise

We will put more detail out soon concerning this, but we wanted to clear up a couple of items here.

Cheers,

OOM

I think its a smart move and probably the system we will see most success at in the future.

-So long as a sub covers everything (no ca$h $hop exclusives even on vanity items) and F2P players can piece-meal their experience with their wallet- I think its fantastic.

F2P is too expensive for my tastes which is why I prefer to sub. =P

This system is hilarious.  I can almost taste the rage when someone who never stops to read anything runs out of lives and encounters perma-death.
  • TorcipTorcip Member UncommonPosts: 669
So free player's can only play so much until the threat of perma-death. I'm not sure what I feel about this.
  • versulasversulas Member UncommonPosts: 288

lol, people griping about death not mattering can just not sub =P

This is kind of cool if they live up to the "no content restrictions" part and don't turn it into a free trial/sub. Of course, you're probably going to want to sub if you play a lot, but if you get bored with the game, you aren't actually going to uninstall it.

It'll be like gw2 in that sense where you have the option to just log in periodically to check things out and not feel like you need to play as much as possible to get your money's worth. Your mains aren't going to be locked because they're max-level or anything. And, from a dev standpoint, they'll be able to put on special events to draw people back in and renew their sub.

The number of lives is per day.  If you die 10 times a day you probably need a break :)  plus that will discourage zerg tatics in pvp.

This whole conversation is getting weird ... Just plain weird

yeah it sounds like a very fair model to me.... so far.

I agree with you on the subscription thing. Thats a huge problem with all the freemium mmos out there. If you are paying a subscription you should have all the cash shop stuff in game as part of your sub. If you decide to go F2P then you use the cash shop. An easy way to set it up is to keep all the cash shop stuff in the cash shop regardless of what model you choose but if you subscribe then the cash shop stuff dont show any prices for you unless you cancel the sub.

This sounds good.   It lets people get a TASTE of the game for free but ultimately keeps it very sub based the way I like it :)   F2P is crap, but this model makes is seem more of a shareware type deal.    I hope they stick to their guns with the model and not turn into SWTOR which still nickles and dimes even the subscribers!   Regardless, I can't wait!   Go out and pledge guys, even $15 gets your some housing pieces and Alpha access starting in June :)

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

but that's not what they're doing here. It says in the sub portion...cash shop bonus, you get a little extra from the cash shop. That probably means you get a discount.

The sub won't matter since the F2P shop will be there and will surely offer exclusive store stuff that subscribers won't get unless they buy extra pieces of the game. Thanks but no thanks..

  • HytekHytek Member UncommonPosts: 153

3-4 days into the campaign and it's only at $745/60.000?

These updates really don't matter since no one is hardly backing the project anyway.

Should have gone buy2play with optional subscription.

"Limited life's per day (Number not determined yet), you will be able to purchase life's if you run out."

.... played probably more than enough world's sh*ttiest Asian f2p grinders in my time, but definitely none of those were this low especially when the p2p scheme involves this too >>>

From what the Devs have said now and over the years, they originally wanted full sub game from my understanding but lets face it, a game without F2P is destined to fail or go F2P within a year.    And while most fully F2P games force you to use the shop, so they devs can keep their lights on, others force you to subscribe.

That being said, in regards to your quote above, I don't think this is the case what-so-ever.   I believe it is them 'forcing' people to subscribe to the game.   Afterall, when you purchase anything in the shop, you get a small amount of Sub time; They are teasing you ;)    They want you to sub.  Is that crazy for a developer to want the players to pay for the product?   A couple years ago no, now it does seem crazy, and that my friends is truly what is crazy.   If you like a game and want to continue playing it (to its fullest), PAY FOR IT!!!

Maybe I led a sheltered life as a kid, but did people complain all the time about demo discs?   "Ugh, they are like FORCING me to buy the actual game, that's so wrong!"  Sounds silly doesn't it?

Yea, it wasn't that long ago that subscriptions were par for the course in MMOs.  Not sure I think the movement toward cash shops and F2P is healthy for the genre.

Will they have the two different pay models on different servers or will it be like the other F2P/Sub type games? I think it would be cool to have the F2P players on their own server.

Which subscription based game do you play ? theres so few  of them left . I prefers sub when its value for money . I didn't think f14 was too  bad for the price and I guess EVE is ok if you like that style of game play . WoW ok but a bit too dumbed down for me now . That really just leaves few older games like Ultima , a few niche games like Darkfall and the newer games like TESO and Wildstar both of which havn't a snowballs chance in hell of being able to maintain a subscription model long term .
