Why so many browser games?

caelaidencaelaiden Member UncommonPosts: 2

I've read MMORPG for awhile and just now decided to get involved in the forums. What I do not understand is why so many people are making browser games? Well I'm sure they are cheaper to make and do not take as long to develop... I just have never played a browser game that does not look absolutely terrible. I'm assuming another reason is due to Runescape's success? Anytime I see a browser game I'm just instantly turned off to the game. What do you guys think do you agree or disagree? Those of you who play browser games what one would you recommend to change my mind?

Thanks

Perhaps you haven't seen a browser game lately. The current technologies allows developers to make quite good looking games. And I have played a lot of games, tried much more...RuneScape was far the best from all of them.

Another reason is to make easy-access games which you can play no matter where you are and which doesn't require a monster computer to run it.

    Easy to make money grabs.

    Here are a few reasons:

    • Low barrier to entry
    • Easily accessible
    • Single-source, multi-platform
    • A browser client/game can be produced with far lower or more stylized  graphics (thus contributing to the above advantages) than what is expectation of the same game done with a standalone client/game.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Yeah I can understand not having to have a monster computer to be able to run certain games. Also you are correct I have not played a browser game lately because I have not seen one that really seemed that interesting. The last browser game I researched into was city of steam. What is your opinion on Runescape 3?

It seems like with browser games there are 200 different skins with the exact same game underneath, I'm not sure if IP laws somehow don't apply to this genera.

Hmm if by RuneScape3 you mean the HTML5 version that is still in beta and very poorly optimized ( that won't run well even in a monster comp :) ). If you mean the normal version, it's not a bad game, actually it's still the best among all of them out of there. They are adding more and more themepark-style content (unfortunately IMO) but it's still a game with the most content I've ever seen. You can play the game for months without ever wearing an armour if you prefer a peaceful gamestyle, but you can as well spend all your time bossing and making huge money. Graphics are far better than they used to be, it's full screen full 3D and personally I like the style. There are so many things to do there I haven't found in any other game, and there are weekly updates.

If someone really wants to try it it's worth to buy a month of membership, most of the good stuff is only available for members. But you can try it as free to play too, try some skills and quests (great quests there, very fun, not the usual kill 10 rats crap), just don't forget that the game really shines if you are a member :)

    pretty much this

They are the low cost alternative to MMOs with a much better ROI.
