During EVE FanFest, we heard about Project Legion, CCP’s in-development MMOFPS. But what’s the vision behind the title, and why did the studio decide against evolving Dust 514? Gareth Harmer interviewed Senior Producer Julien Dulioust to find out more.

Read more of Gareth Harmer's DUST 514: Forming the Legion.

This could be the fps to end all fps's. I highly respect Eve and CCP.  And Planetside 2 is just not good enough.

Have you played Dust? Because I dont think you have.

    Its terrible.

It really wont matter if they put it on PC, improve graphics, and give it more sandbox-ish features if the game at its core is bad.

But I guess Eve fans really dont care about that.

itll have an instant fanbase for sure= eve players. so they got that going for them, unfortunately they also alienated many eve players when they released DUST...

lets hope this is their redemption for the eve players have been asking for since 2005!

I wonder why releasing games with exclusivity contracts in place is also not discrimination. Oh thats right capitalism has no moral structure.

I was just getting ready to say something to that effect. (Alienating their eve players) I think the idea sounds fun, but things always seem better on paper. That, and dust being the way it is. Ive kinda lost confidence in CCP

In my mind, the single feature that has always set EVE's PVP design apart from other MMO's is the massive size of the game world. That sheer size allows whole groups of players to "permanently" own large chunks of the game world.

In "normal" ground-based games, the game world is too small to allow certain groups to deny access to the rest of the playerbase. It's simply not practical. So standard MMO PVP wars tend to be all about "keep trading". They have to be designed that way, because there are simply too few assets in the world to allow any group to hold one of them for any length of time.

If this game allows that significant territorial conquest and ownership aspect, it may be a game changer. Otherwise it's "just another shooter" with it's own attempt at some unique (but ultimately trivial) feature.

If its anything similar to Eve Online and maybe even integrated into Eve universe this could be a real serious fps shooter.
    A sandbox mmo shooter ?
Now that is something to look forward to :)

Like a few you have already said, this game could really be something special.

    Huh? Why.

They killed off WoD. A hard but needed move.

They are dropping out of the console game. Good choice.

They have been focusing on core gameplay in EvE, polishing what they have to a shine for the last two years, and continue to do so.

They have had a solid consistent plan for the last two years about where they are taking EvE, and seems to finally be able to keep focus.

Valkyrie is a doubious project, but they have a clear limited scope for it, so it wont hurt EvE with complicated interation work like DUST 514 did.

DUST 514 Legion is the DUST they should have made in the first place. Partly reusing the resources already spent on DUST 514 instead of building something completely new and first deleiver in 5 years is a solid, time and money saving strategy.

Actually I have more faith in them now than I have had since around 2007.

Of course we do but we don't generally take posts serious that only say "it's bad" with nothing to back it up.  Attacking someone without anything more than generalized, anecdotal evidence is just someone trying to debate from a position of severe weakness.

Eve players tend to have a lot of faith in CCP because they are one of the very few companies that have shown they listen to their customers and will actually spend years on the improvements they want.

All I see them doing is throwing money around like no tomorrow making bad investments. What they should do is focus on the game that makes them who they are Eve Online.

Following that logic Bioware would still only be making Baldurs Gate sequels...

They currently ARE focusing. Thats the point. That is why they closed WoD.

The trouble with focusing on a single game, is what happens when players get bored of it and move on to something else, leaving a dwindling base that can no longer support the studio. As CCP will never make a sequel to EVE, diversification is essential to their strategy if they ever want to grow beyond their current audience.

I still have to question a studio that thought it was a good idea to develop Dust in the first place.  Makes me wonder what other great decision CCP has up their sleeve...

    You make me like charity

What do you want me to say?

Dust's flaws have been pretty well documented since beta and its only gotten marginally better with updates.

Should I tell you about the bad gameplay, the bad level design, the bad graphics engine or the bad pay to win item system?

The only people not willing to see that Dust is a bad game down to its core are the people that stuck their fingers in their ears and shouted "la la la its all the PS3s fault la la la cant hear you".

You say you have a "lot of faith in CCP" but I call it "blind faith".

In 2008, CCP made a massive mistake by dividing the Eve universe into 3 - Eve Online, DUST, and later this year Valkyrie. Between 2008 to 2013, it did not matter because CCP had literally no competition whatsoever.

Fast forward to 2014 - now we have Elite: Dangerous coming out roughly this September, which should eventually do the same job as each of these 3 games, but in a far more immersive way, and Star Citizen on the more distant horizon.

I am sure that CCP are absolutely shitting bricks. However, I can't see how they can do anything about it - they've been complacent and left things far too late.

You cant kill EVE with twitch-based/direct-flight game mechanics. End of story. Way too many old farts like me playing that LIKE the way you interface with you ship in EVE.

You're right up to a point - Eve Online will still fill a niche for a while.

However, it's only a matter of time before the 3 Eve games are totally replaced because dividing the Eve world gimps the evolution of all 3 games.

CCP LIED to an entire sub genre (sorry but the world of darkness fanbase is much bigger then EvE). The screwed their own pooch by seeing dollar signs instead of developing DUST correctly in the first place (did they really think they would get in on the console market?) So to recap they shit all over one fanbase by cancelling a project that was far into its development already, they then turn around and admit, "oops we were stupid in our fantasy of getting that console money and now we are returning to our original plan".

CCP can burn in a fire.  Incompetence begets incompetence.

EVE is a awesome game but I have my doubts about the FPS idea.
  • VaselVasel Member UncommonPosts: 226
That ship has sailed to bad they didn't listen to all the Eve players on PC that would be playing Dust. It was just the dumbest business decision to alienate the player base by not using the platform you got your name brand so well known on.
  • DeddmeatDeddmeat Member UncommonPosts: 387

I played Dust when it was beta and then came out and i still had a PS3 .. loved it

If this makes it to PC i'll be getting that, til then have my mmo's, Titanfall on the X1 and a PS3 arriving soon lol.

I'm sold at "EvE on the ground" if that is actually what we get

however I remain sceptic for now

  • jackocompjackocomp Member UncommonPosts: 50

I don't hold much hope for this new game just like I didn't hold much for DUST514 after we found out it was going to be a PS3 exclusive game in a world of FPS genre games & clones.

I wish CCP luck with this & can't help but wonder just how many FAILED games they can produce before it forces them into financial problems? I know developing a game these days from scratch can cost more than making a movie for the big screen {Well one of those B grade porno flicks anyway } It would be interesting to find out how much was lost when WOD was discontinued as I would guess it was a considerable amount of money.

Anyway I guess time will tell with this one

    Here's a poll for you.

Which development studio takes longer to listen to what their fans have been screaming all along?

    a) CCP

    b) Blizzard
