Don't laugh, but for me it's probably transport tycoon deluxe. I can play that for weeks.
"Zelda: A link to the past" comes close though.
As for mmos, I have to say anarchy online
Great game. Even though it's very easy to make cash in that game. Personally it was never about that for me, It was and still is a great virtual train set. Try open TTD if you haven't heard about it.

Civilization. Have been playing that game for over 20 years.. no end in sight. Can't say that for any other game. And every now and then you get a new updated version of it. I suppose it will be good for another 20-30 years until i die.
Click on that link and look at the game designers also notice EA's name in the mix. Keep in mind this was 1996 -- EA wasn't the EA it is now and it was games like this one that would pave the way for the online play we enjoy today.
Oh such good times.
UO was given to RM players for free once the servers for RM shut down
This was 3 faction fps/rpg pvp - the goal was to eliminate the enemies, enemies would respawn so long as thier shrine was full ( see the red blue and green bars in the image top left corner) if your shrine was completely destroyed your faction was elminated - the game would continue until time ran out, or another team was eliminated - but there was magic being slung all over the place, such a great time.

MMO:
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
Best past MMO experiences: WoW, FFXI. I could never play them again though.
Best current MMO: ESO, FFXIV.
Best sport game: NHL 14
Best shooter; GTA V, if you count that...
If I had to choose one game to play the rest of my life I would choose: NHL 14, ESO <------this could change but I am having a blast currently.
Speaking of blasts....
Obviously:
Totally overrated. Making love is a lot better.
OT: Quake 2.
Everyone knows "The Best Game" is the next superhyped title (that's still in development, preferably alpha).
I mean, just look at that feature list, it's definitely going to be a WoW killer...
MMORPG gameplay: Vanilla WoW
MMORPG story: Lotro
MMORPG sandbox: Ryzom (PVE) or Eve Online (PVP)
ARPG: Diablo 2 or POE, or Titan quest
FPS Story: Halo or Half life 2 series both single player but classic
All are still playable...

It's like elder scrolls but the gameplay and quests are better.
I prefer a good old fashioned anger-bang myself
OT: Fallout 2

pong without it there would be no video games.
Thats not a good game at all I have tryied it a few times and now I have five kids
MMO = GW2
FPS = CS:GO or 1.6
Simulators = Football manager
Board games = TP
Card Games =Texas Hold em
RPG = Final fantasy 7
RTS = Red Alert 1 (soooo good)
Planescape Torment
That game is an artistic masterpiece in electronic form
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
