Asheron's Call: Subscription Model to End in July

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In August, both Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2 will be going free to play according to an announcement on the official forums. As a result, the final subscription will be assessed at the end of June prior to the transition in August.

As of August 2014, Asheron’s Call and Asheron's Call 2 will no longer charge a subscription fee for players. The last payments will be processed on June 31st, making July the final “paid” month. Note that this means some players will technically receive some portion of July free as a result, as we have decided to absorb the cost and not run partial payments to cover it. Other important information for the transition:

  • After the transition, new accounts can be created with a one-time $10 purchase through our normal sign-up page

  • We will no longer be performing MSN Zone migrations after May 31st (click here for more information regarding MSN Zone Migrations)

  • Any inactive subscriptions that players wish to access after the transition will require a one-time activation fee of $10 via the myaccount website

  • Note that after the transition, help requests will only be available regarding harassment issues or account assistance with the $10 one-time activation purchase.

  • The AC forums will remain up and available

We also wanted to provide an update regarding “community” servers. Our current plan is to offer the first player run server packages and to open up our player run server sub-forums by the end of the year. Our first offering will be a basic AC1 server and client download. We expect the first offering to be light on documentation, as it is intended for enthusiasts with experience in setting up servers and dealing with networking. While set up instructions will be offered on these new sub-forums, this initial offering will be intended to be used in conjunction with the forums to allow the community to begin the process of running servers and creating documentation for that process.

Participate in the discussion on the Asheron's Call forum.

Everquest went f2p in March of 2012. AC which released a little later than Everquest held out a lot longer. Never liked AC I played both and enjoyed Everquest more but I guess the last of the old guard has become f2p.

This game and Ultima Online bring back so many memories of how the early MMO game look liked everything was so open and unrestricted was so much more fun to play .

this is B2P. It clearly states there's a 10 dollar entry fee.

Don't you think that $10 is a pretty good deal , I mean a one of payment for two games and no sub ?

So no micro-transactions after the initial $10?  I imagine a cash shop will be implemented in the future.

    DAOC released in 2001 -- it's a sub game

Lineage is also still a sub game   (not to be confused with L2)

I guess there probably will be micro transactions at some point , but if it is just for cosmetic stuff , I think it will an awesome deal.

I have always wanted to jump in and play Asheron's call , but was always put of by the sub.

if the shop is anything like Turbine other games  (LOTRO and DDO)

    - it will be much more than cosmetic

They'll just milk out some final dollars before closing the servers.

Well if that's true , I cant wait it will be great , but how long do you think they will keep the servers running , do you think they will just leave them up, and keep hoping to get more people paying the initial $10 ?.

SOE left the EQ Mac servers running as free to play w no shop for 18 months

hopefully AC1/AC2 will last 2+ years

Beginning of the end. Isn't this how Shadowbane went out? Went free for a while then just faded away?

Actually, lets hope they put some kind of shop in. Otherwise they will run out of income for them and shut them down. With some form of shop they can last forever.

I still don't understand why people don't get the fact that NOTHING can last forever for free. (and the $10 purchase price won't be enough to make it last)

Too bad Lineage shut down all of their north american servers years ago. Id take a F2P/B2P conversion over shutting down an entire region just to save my subscription model in Korea any day :P

Wait didnt AC2 close down a long time ago?

    And is AC still running?

Sorry didnt follow either game, haha

Liked the game, I resubscribed last fall for a month, it is one of those games that requires a lot of knowledge to play, I ended up not playing much at all.  I think the easy play of more current MMO's has ruined me.

Still my favorite game of all time. AC 2 was brought back a few years ago as a free game to play for anyone who was subscribed to AC 1.

They reopened AC2 as a extra freebie for anyone with an AC1 subscription.

Well $30 if you've already bought the game before and havn't been subbing the whole time.  Guess I still won't get to see what has changed in the game.

$30 = $19.99 I paid to buy the game the first time + $10 just to "earn" the right to play what I bought.

If you are going to quibble over 10 dollars for a game that cost $13 a month then you don't "really" want to play it anyways.

AC is very dated....I'd guess they wont make any money on it beyond the 10 dollar initial fee......It will probably be lucky to last a year.
  • WraithoneWraithone Member RarePosts: 3,806
Given this is the same turbine that closed down AC2 (right after selling us an expansion...) I'm surprised they didn't just close the servers down.  Neither AC nor the new return of AC2 can be making them much money.  I suspect the servers will not last very long.
