SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Dark Souls is arguably one of the most hard-core RPGs in history, and because of its success, its creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has been promoted to president of its developer, From Software. The company was recently purchased by publisher Kadokawa with an interest in developing games for Western markets.

The announcement can be read in full on Gamasutra.

I agree that DS2 was a bit easier, however I question how much of that is from the fact that players have a ton of experience from DS1.

I just wish it worked well with keyboard and mouse so I could play it.  From what I have heard the first one was horrible with keyboard and mouse, and, although this was an improvement, it still does not play well.

Such great news for core gaming. The only Souls game I ever played and beat "multiple times" was Demon's Souls on PS3 and I loved every second of it.

Here's to hoping that From Software can become the next Sega in terms of popularity and with a more robust set of online functionality for the next Souls game to push it forward technically I believe they very well could....oh and a new King's Field game couldn't hurt. image

Gotta love Japanese developers they are really the best out there at the craft.

It something that should have been taken into account - previous experience - that's why I think that they should have evolved the game more in terms of difficulty - gives us some encounters that require new thinking, new strategies - push the difficulty to the next level.

I feel they just played it safe in DS2.

I am pretty sure they did take that into account, at least partially, with the loss of max HP after each death. I would hardly call DS2 "playing it safe".

As mentioned before I really think it is because the vets are so used to souls games now. I found some of it to be quite challenging, especially areas like the shrine of amana. However, talking to my co-workers who are first time souls players, they think the game is just absolutely brutal. It took them hours upon hours to overcome the first two areas, but after that it started to click.

That is precisely how I remember my Demon's Souls experience. The first couple of areas were just agonizing to get through, and then all of the sudden it all just clicked. So I think the series is maintaining that difficulty because I've seen several new players go through the same thing I went through with the first game.

Step 1: Start as a Deprived.

    Step 2: Join Champion's Covenant.

    Step 3: ?

    Step 4: Cry.

I played ds2 and fell in love now busy with ds1 and demons souls, cant wait for the next souls game and they should not make it too hard it helps a lot the co-op help from players.

this is the way games should be made I love the fact of the hidden doors and secret loot locations.

Anyone who says that the game is unplayable on keyboard hasn't played the game on PC or has no patience/aptitude to learn.

The game works amazingly well on PC, the controls are super tight and responsive.

You just have to understand going in to the game that you might have to rebind the keys to your own personal style. I spent two hours rebinding my keys to get them where I wanted them but once I did I had a blast. Now, granted I died a lot but that was just my inexperience with the game and I hadn't beat a Souls game since Demon's Souls so I am quite rusty.

Didn't help that I started my first character as a deprived and was resolved not to use a shield.

Eventually I did pick up a shield though and so far The Last Sinner has vastly been the easiest boss I have fought.

Basically anyone who says the PC controls are unplayable just wants to whine and complain. They feel so much better than gamepad controls when you get used to them. This is my experience and it won't be for everyone because not everyone has the patience to learn where they want their keys to be bound at by dying a bunch of times but right now I have a good 26 hours into the game only playing with PC controls and I am completely satisified.

A tip for anyone who wants to do a jump attack or shield bash attack: use keyboard keys for the buttons instead of mouse keys and it will work every time. If you are using the mouse to do it, it will not be consistent.

I hope that after reading my post more people will have the guts to try and learn the game with mouse and keyboard but I know the vast majority of people who play Dark Souls are console apologists that think that it's okay if you need a controller to play a game.

Well, you don't need a controller to play the second one so get it out of your head and be open to a fun PC gaming experience.

good news for the souls franchise IMO.

Now all they need to do is start banning the cheaters on the PC version and porting it to PS4.

This is basically what I did. except since I wasn't keeping my game data, I was just backstabbing all of the NPCs in the main city. I got the blacksmith's hammer and proceeded to level my str/dex. I ended up getting the bluemoon greatsword and stopped playing at the wharf area. never left the champion's covenant throughout my 4 hours of playing.

    pretty cool game.

To be honest, I found DS2 harder than DS1. By 3/4 through to the end of DS1 I was having no problems whatsoever killing the enemies and the bosses. They were a joke. in DS2 was struggling through the stuff  for almost the entire game, though I missed some areas early on and was overpowered for them when I figured out where they were.

I would say, at the very least, the bosses seemed easier a lot of the time, but the areas between bosses were more difficult.

I beat the game, and now I play for fun with the multiplayer and PvP arena on occasion, which is all better and awesome, imo.

Regardless, glad to hear this news. With the creator as President, that means Dark Souls 3 won't be watered down, either. Assuming they make a third one; though I can't see them not making a third one to continue the success.
