Eh - I will see how it pans out BUT this was already in DF1 basically and everyone used the same flavor of the month - and it was also done much better in DF1 as well so that is already a negative. Sounds good on paper but we shall see how they implement it. My guess is that it will be the same and you will be seeing everyone running around in the same armor/skill setups like before in DF1.
But hey maybe I will be wrong this time and this is THAT patch that really bring the population back.
Mine is not wrong at all - recall The Destroyer and those roles released? Again the beauty of DF1 is you also learn all skills and spec HOW you wanted. That is all this will be in essence.
Anyhow since I have not played since June of last year they are not starting off well at all getting me back or others - as you try to go to their support page to have your characters restored and it says the webpage is not available - grrrrrr......

Yeah my character is now restored - not idea why but a cable modem reset fixed it. I will give them a fair shake at this custom roles and see how it is.
I resubbed last Thursday so I can start refreshing myself how to play again. Been doing some of the habitual's to get some more prowess and have been enjoying the improvements they have added since I stopped playing almost 8 months ago. Can't wait for this patch, just hope that it won't end with everyone having to be the same super build to be competitive.

Anything in particular you could say more about that has made the game better for you?
EDIT: I would still be playing this game, probably, except for ping issues I have from Asia. DF was a bit more playable for me when they had the NA server on the west coast of the US, but after they moved it to the east coast, the lag was too much even with battleping. The Aussies I played with mostly chose polearm as a main weapon for the better chance to hit. We tried to play around the lag, which matters in this game. I wonder what it's like to play from the east coast. Must be fun. I'm jealous. Enjoy.
Added more dungeons, some of the improvements to the UI, Banning dbag dupers on a large scale, Clan territories, Villages reward more now, Mob loot is being redone but not finished yet but it is better than before, made farming mats only one of the things you have to do to craft now you can PvE to get mats (that might fall in the mob loot being redone), Crafting orders I can now use my weaponsmithing that is maxed out for random people and get some prowess, added the third school to prime and skirm, Monoliths uhhh I'm sure there are other things I'm missing out but this next patch is going to be another one.
Can't find another game like this one, all the other PvP in the most recent games are just boring and stale. DF feels like a world with its own politics, spies, alliance drama, sea battles etc...
Not saying its the perfect game or anything but there is just nothing out there that has anything close to this, wish there was a AAA game like it but there would never be because its a small market for people who enjoy it.

THe system is completely different to DFO's encumberance system.

The EU server was even worse.
Well, you know there is also an Asian F2P Version hosted by Mgame ?
To get you abit in the DF mood i recomment watching this:
Originally posted by Badaboom So, who here at MMORPG is waiting for this patch before rejoining Darkfall?
Well, I wasn't specifically waiting for the patch before joining. I decided to come back and check it out just because I'd kinda wanted to get back into playing it anyway.
The specific role thing is nice, though. I like open skill-based systems, but choice is also "dangerous" to me. I have a kind of "ADD" with open skill-based systems; I can never make up my mind of what I want to do, so I just keep switching between builds. So, having a specific build to work toward is good for me .
I will say, it looks like they've really improved the graphics since I last played (Unholy Wars that is). Game looks great.
I'd last checked it out through Steam, but that whole setup was more frustration than it was worth. Tried attaching my Steam account to a regular AV account, but the button to "Register" was always greyed out in the launcher. Really annoying.
Since the cost of buying the game is a sub-fee anyway, figured "why not", and started a new account/character. Wasn't that far in before anyway.
So now I get to re-learn the game and see how it's doing. Started in a different town than I did last time. So it'll be some new scenery, too, which is cool.
Anyhoo.. Will get myself used to things again and then perhaps look for a clan to join.
AV rly are doing wonders. The only once hurting the game is some moronic cheating players. That duped shitloads of mats. Hopefully they haven't screwed up the game to much. New role system looks like da bomb. Gonna be a blast for sure.
The changes to skill usage (3 options per skill), territory control and levys etc can be a bit complex at start, so dont wait to long to get into a helpful clan or ask a lot in global or help chat.
Thanks!
I'm tempted to try the whole "mentor" thing, but I'm hesitant.
In other games, mentors usually try to immediately get you on the "here's how to power-level to the cap as fast as possible, and here's exactly how you should play the character, and here's exactly how you should do everything...". They kind of try to make you into a clone of themselves, and then they get angry when you say 'well, I don't really want to power-level, and I'd like to consider other options..."
So I'm always 'iffy' about participating in mentor type things.

If I was mentoring you I would just give you advice and help you farm.

Nice. Yeah, I think that's the way it should be.
I mean, it's fine to sorta give help with "the essentials"; the things that are the basic grass-roots, building-blocks toward everything else in the game. That's cool.
But then it should be a matter of saying "Hey, what's your playstyle? What do you enjoy doing? What do you think you'd like to get out of this game? And, it's okay if you aren't 100% sure right now since you're still newer at it... Just have at it, and ask questions if you have them".
That's really the way I would, and have, approached it in other games. Help the person learn and adapt the playstyle they'll enjoy, that'll keep them playing. Don't try to force them into some role of "mini-me". I think people mean well when they do that. I mean, what they're suggesting worked for them, so it should follow that it'd work for someone else, too... except maybe the other person doesn't find that approach interesting. I ran into that a lot in Eve. People in Eve seem *huge* on the "mini-me" thing, in my experience anyway.
Well, I started a new character again (had created an Elementalist, and wasn't really enjoying that as my "starting role", so I decided to create a Skirmisher. We'll see how that goes. Right now I'm working on getting some gold so I can complete these initial crafting tutorials. So.. I logged off on my way out to kill some goblins.
I am really, seriously loving the look of this world. Always have loved it. I love the gritty sorta "fantasy realism" of Agon. It also looks like they've cleaned up a lot of the texturing since I last played UW. When I last played, I was rather dismayed at how much texture stretching I saw - and in really obvious places, on large, jagged rocks, etc. It looked like it was seriously rushed in that dept; artists trying to meet a deadline heh. Looks like they've done some of that cleaning since I last checked it out.
Anyhoo.. Who knows.. maybe I'll nag ya to be my mentor, Badaboom. You have Milla Jovovich as your avatar, so you can't be all bad .

Thanks for listing those. Sounds fun.
Too bad for me I live so far from the server.
