Wait,u just said pvp server? I thought all servers will be PVP pitting good vs evil. Don't tell me it will only be on "certain servers" If thats the case, everyone would leave their current server and head over to the pvp ones.. Please tell me pvp will be on all servers..
Assuming that most EQ2 players are PvPers is like assuming all CoH players where PvP players when they bring CoV. Ask Cryptic how they feel their existing player base receive PvP. Ask them if all the change to PvE and all the players they lose over it was worth it.
I think Stateman has a Statuette of Johny in his basement and he must sacrifice a hamster every new Moon to Johny or something.
Even without playing EQ2 I can safely tell you, of the existing player base, the PvPers are a minority. If PvP would shaft PvEers, they better not implement it on existing servers. In CoV, despite a very nice PvP system...players are complaining that the PvP zones are empty. If they would have focus PvP on some servers, they would have happier players than now IMO.

I don't think the blame can be laid upon just one person over there. The problems they demonstrate sound more like "too many chiefs, not enough indians", and "too many hands in the cookie jar".
SOE reports to top Exec's at Sony, and Sony's overall mission is integration. The top execs want SOE to service everything their company has to offer, and leverage profitability. For example, they want their games to drive sales of other goods they manufacture, like console games, monitors, audio/visual entertainment, etc.
These goals come BEFORE the goals of gamers, and that is why SOE consistantly falls short of meeting consumer needs. This combined with what appears to be several department heads with decision-making authority to get ideas into the game, and thusly pulled from the live game by another authoritative figure would explain the illogical gameplay changes that plague their titles.
So, while they may employ some extremely brilliant people, my guess would be that this brilliance is blocked by those who control the money... who are probably also the people who know the least about this industry.

No point listing my game titles, classes & levels. Accomplishing anything in an MMO these days is so bloody common that nobody really gives a crap.
There is nothing SOE could do to make me play any of their games again. They're a despicable company who should be extremely worried about their future. I don't think it matters who runs the joint, it isn't going to change.
I renewed my account this last weekend, and the game IS much better.
I run sooo much faster it doesn't make it so painful to cross a continent now, especially my rogue, WOW - the bionic woman. Quest givers are clearly marked. Graphics details are a bit better, and there seems to be more "color" in the game, I like the improved combat graphics for spellcasting etc. UI is better. Item/Loot drops seem better.
The only problem now is that my server has "moved on" and has a very large population of high levels and a very small population of lower levels, so buying/selling/crafting/grouping is remarkably harder than it used to be. I'm probably going to roll alts to master other crafting professions just so I can be as self reliant as possible. Even movement in the game seems easier than before.... many "wow" like features that just make the game better seem to have been added.
Originally posted by Jd1680a I know there are alot of problems SOE is doing to their games. We all know what they did with SWG and now they seem to have screwed up EQ2. Some of you might agree or disagree that SOE is doing a terrible job with its games. Personally I find there respect of its customers and its business model to be very poor. Honestly the one man who I blame for all these problems is John Smedley. Mr Smedley is the man who is running all the online games that is under SOE, so its really his fault for SWG fisaco and with the poor performance with its other games. Definitely when SOE begins losing money because of its great loss of its player base of many of its games. My question is this, if Sony Inc, were to release, as in fire John Smedley with many of other higher management of SOE. Would you consider of returning to EQ2?
I agree that Smedley is a big part of the problem. He has jumped from one ideal to another in almost every interview he does. However he is only one man. The art department needs to go back to Design class and they need to bring in someone who has some talent with more than just adding Polygons. Overall EQII and what was left of SOE just didn't seem to "Get" what made EQI successful and what it's majority of fans wanted. It also kicked all it's SWG fans in the jewels as well. No one trusts SOE anymore except the extreme fanboy. The last overly successful Online game they produced was EQI and it was made by the gentleman who now are at Sigil. SOE needs new blood not only in management, but in the creative department, the art department, and especially the customer service department. Smedley and SOE have become the Online Community's version of "THE MAN" and thats a tough thing to break. One day SWG and EQII and Planetside and Matrix will die off and I don't personally think SOE has anything revolutionary up their sleeve or a staff currently to pull something original and new off.

explain to me what they did so wrong with EQ2 that you say "now they seem to have screwed up EQ2"?

Care to elaborate on what is so despicable about SOE? We are talking EQ2 here, not some other game that you are freaking out about. If you are refering to the SWG thing, well that's an entirely different game, made by a different team, made in a different state than EQ2.
Judge a game on its own merits and flaws. EQ2 is a good game and it keeps getting better. LU19 is looking amazing according the the test server notes, and an expansion is coming within a month. Not much to complain about here.

Well I will give my opinion based solely on EQII and not SWG then. What I found that they did was bump up the textures and shadowing and polygons from EQI but otherwise it felt like a totally different game. Some may like that and more power to them but I played EQI for four years plus and followed the forums for EQII in anticipation for three years as EQI slowly lost it's luster and anything that got me excitied about EQII went away within ten to twenty levels of play:
1. Armors looked incredible in Pre-Beta screenshots but any armor of any degree of coolness and uniqueness was removed post release. Their were dragonscaled robes, heavy spiked Ogre armors of black, glowing staffs, intricate gold and white enameled elven armor and green mail on Kerran rangers in pre-release screens that were all cut to leave us with roughly two leathers, two cloth, and two plate kinds of armor for every race.
2. Boats and Travel: Much like Vanguard, EQII promised adventures on the high seas and that travel would be exciting and non-monotonous. How did they do this? They made little bells to ring that instantly transported you to an instanced zone. No boats, no sense of the world map etc.
3. No World Depth: They took away the Gods, and all the starting cities and most of the starting races history and left us with two rather uninteresting cities for everyone. No Evil Ogre Flintstone huts, No exotic Elven tree city, No Dwaven mining community or Frozen Halas. It made the world feel like a series of little boxes even moreso than the first game.
4. Locked Encounters and No Shared Quests and XP Debt: These three combined pretty much seemed to promote no community whatsoever. No one wanted to group with an idiot and share his debt, no one could be nice and buff a nubee, and no one could share many of the quests in game without running thru three or four zones of Freeport or Quenos to get the quest yourself. At best I had people group with me just long enough to kill something for a quest and then they would bail to go solo.
In short to me SOE took several steps backwards in the development of EQII from the first game instead of a step forward. Granted the Graphics were highly textured but even they lacked the originality and design of it's parent game. These of course are my opinions solely although I have heard others express the same feelings. I gave it two months and even came back because I so wanted it to feel like the Norrath of old but to me, SOE let me down. It felt nothing like the Norrath of EQI.
I would have to agree with Abraxos. SOE had a gold mine of lore with EQ1 that they could have drawn from in fabricating the EQ2 world. Instead they destroyed it and remade it to be less then the original. All the grandly pixilated graphics wont matter in the long run when everything feels so soulless and all the characters look the same. Additionally, amusement park zone design where each zone has a seperate "theme" needs to go away. Think Homer, not Disney.
Would I come back to EQ2? uhm....let me think....NO! Actually, I wouldn't have to think about it at all. All I know is, any game thats run by SOE is not worth the time, effort or cash. Just look at what they did to SWG. 'nuff said.
THere is no point bashing eq2 because sony screwd with SWG, there different dev teams, and i doubt there gunna do it agian based on how SWG turned out.
SWG and EQ2 are (on everything but the basic level) completely different, i dont think smedly runs around trying to ruin his buisseness, actully i dont think he even desighns the games, he just makse deals with LA, and Marvel, and things.
All the changes to EQ2 have been good, THey are changing armour apperences all the time, no longer is everyone the same.
And the only way we will get new and exotic lands is through expansions. I dont know what people are saying, but Freeport and Qynos both look incredably, Just seeing the gian freeport citadell hovering over the city is aw-inspiring.
Plus, Maj'dul is built on a giant escartment of rock overlooking all of RO, thats preatty cool. And now there is an Aviak city coming out.
I'll probably give EQ2 another shot when the expansion comes out..Starting fresh on a pvp server aftter a year away from the game should prove to be interesting.. Also with the class changes soon to be implemented along with all the other enhanced features implemented since I quit,I'm actually looking forward to coming back for round 2.. I doubt I'll play another Brigand..I think I'll try a SK or Fury for PVP.. Can't wait!
One thing good I'd like to say about Sony.. At least they are bending over backwards trying to make EQ2 the best MMOG they possibly can after making so many mistakes at release.. The biggest complaint I had with EQ2 was the LONG BORING group battles with every mob a couple levels higher than u.. Instead of giving the mobs 2000000000 HP,try giving them better abilities and skills which allow them to hit harder..Reduce their hp considerably and boost their skills..That would make fighting them more exciting

i really enjoyed everquest for the amount of time i played it.whitch was only to lvl 20.i just didnt stick with it though because 1 all my friends are playing WoW 2 the grind in EQ2 was going to be alot harder then WoW and i really didnt feel like doing it without any friends and 3 it just seemed a little empty
