There is no question that racing games on all platforms are hugely possible but until the recent announcement of World of Speed, the MMO space has not seen many pass through its portals. We caught up to Slightly Mad Studios CEO Andy Tudor to find out more about the game. Read on and then leave your thoughts in the comments.

"Andy Tudor: World Of Speed has been built from the ground up to feel very familiar to MMO players, which is what makes it unique compared to other titles that may have attempted similar ideas. Upon logging in, players will be able to jump into a race (or 'raid') within one click and invite any fellow online club members to join as well. Before the event begins you'll want to bring your best 'weapons' and skills in the form of the vehicles you're driving as well as the kit that's installed on them. As the event loads you'll be able to strategize with players on your team about the 'side quest' objectives that are to be completed in each race. Once you're off the starting grid, you'll want to climb positions in the pack, complete those objectives, prevent the opposing team from completing theirs, and build your score in order to collaboratively win the event for your team, earn XP to level up, and get loot in the form of Cash and Boosts. This should all sound very natural to MMO players, and when you add in the club management, recruiting, leaderboards, and special in-game events World Of Speed is going to be a natural fit for players of all experience levels."
So. How is this an MMO again? It sounds like every other racing game made for the past 5 years. You can't just call it an MMO because you want to. Right? Is anyone else confused by how this could be considered an MMO?
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
how is this an mmo.. how many players are in a race? clearly not 1000s? so i guess its basically just a lobby based game and not an mmo at all.
Everybody's hung up on the semantics of whether this game is an MMO or not, missing the entire point. Is this a game that could be fun to play with friends and against thousands of other people online? Yes, it does seem promising to me.
What would a "pure" racing MMO look like, I wonder? Tracks clogged like freeways during rush hour as everybody is packed in? Dudes harvesting rubber trees and combining it with a rare recipe to make +3 tires of speed? Quest-givers in pit stops 'Run over three bears and bring me their butts'. Oh, I know, let's make it strictly sandbox. No official tracks, just a bunch of open roads with car dealerships on every corner; OWPvP where guys in Hummers gank newbies in their pintos.
How does a racing MMO work... If Need for Speed:world is anything to go by... Not very well at all.
Then again that game have suffered through... Three... four? studios and is so shock-full of cheaters that you can´t park a smart car without hitting one,
As for this game... I give it 2 months before it is as bad.. or worse.
This have been a good conversation
Quite a few games listed on this site aren't MMOs. Sadly, this isn't new.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
confirmed, the APB was soooooo promising, it ended shit .
I'm waiting for the game, it is beautiful I know I most probably don't a machine for it (new game expects i5 or i7 with GC with 2Gb 4 or 6 Gb RAM etc...) but I'll try it anyway. I just passed my eyes to the previous comments what I've retained: how is going to be for races? probably put 10 or 20 or whatever in the race track to compete maybe two or more faction trying to occupy garages, try to destroy other cars??? Those are just thoughts bottom line We'll have to wait and see... But saying it's bad whithout trying... doesn't make any sense... it's almost like lots of comment on Stream: How can you say anything about a game with 3 or 4 hours of play? I don't!!!
Stay well, be good!
)))))
In a MMO you would have to build your race car, here it is given to you. In a MMO you would have to build your skill set, not here. In an MMO you would be able to interact with all players on and off the course, not here.
Hence all this is, is a multiplayer lobby based race car game. Labeling it as a MMO is ludicrous.
Who said MMO needs to have that? People have been changing it over and over again. It stands for MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE, who says there has to be massive amounts of people at the same time and same place? Just a massive amount of people playing the same game at the same time, multiplayer - 2 or more people playing (together). And lastly online, which is kinda obvious... As such even this game fits the profile.
Well maybe it fits your profile, but then you obviously do not understand what a MMO is. It is far beyond just a massive multiplayer online game. You develop your character and/or his environment, there is nothing of that in this game. I would actually dispute the massively label too as any lobby based game you are limited to the few in your instance. Certainly nothing massive about that. I don't see any difference in this game from other multiplayer racing games.
