I can look up the differences myself on the games website, wiki etc., but there is always a bias associated with that and some of the fundamental "feeling" of the interface, flow of combat (like in SWG) etc.
So what in this game do you find better, or worse than in everything we've seen so far?
Comments
Its more responsive than any MMORPG I have played. It feels like a shooter. So far, WoW and Guild Wars were the best in this area, but the precision and clean responsiveness of Wildstar is a league ahead, and that without the "cheating" of WoW with 10 meter melee range and client-based detection in some cases.
Also, Wildstar allows me, coming over from FFXIV raiding recently, to pick up where I left, and does not insult me with the dungeons. While they are completely optional and not even very efficient for levelling, the very first dungeons are already at the level of the intermediate 8-Man raids from FFXIV. Fair, well-tuned, involved and diverse fights, with well-executed and well-communicated mechanics and interactions.
Last but not least, there are a TON of quality-of-life things, and luxury features, that are just there from start. Not waiting X months for a group finder, not waiting a patch or two for customization, this game has it ALL, right there, on release. I dont think ANY MMORPG aside from GW2 had this amount of QoL features.
I am enjoying it a lot to be honest.
(1) It has more action combat than GW2 or WoW. That sets it apart from them.
(2) TO set it apart from TERA... That is more tricky. The art style I suppose.
I can't compare Wildstar with Guild Wars 2. Because to me they are a lot different from each other. But I can easily compare Wildstar with WoW. When it comes to pve, Wildstar is a lot competitive than WoW right now. Combat is a lot better. Graphics and animations are a lot more polish. And Wildstar's end game pve feels more hardcore and high quality than WoW. I'm playing Wildstar for pve right now. And I will keep playing it for sure. But still even I play it, I don't believe Wildstar will continue with p2p model very long. It didn't get enough hype till now. But the game itself is amazing.
For me..;
Pvp and casual pve -> Guild Wars 2
Competitive, hardcore pve -> Wildstar
There are more differences than similarities in WS in comparison to GW2 and WoW. WS has elements that the other games do not have.
For one, class customization I would say resembles D3's customization more in some ways with the exception of changing what your skills do with runes. You have to choose what skills go in your hotbar, you can tweek what skills you develope, and you also boost your passive attributes much like the Paragon system. I would say it is a mix of GW2 and D3. There are no talents per se. You also have access to only one weapon type.
In GW2 some skills can have up to three or four effects and you have combos. In WS you don't. The uberness of your attacks and combat relies on what skill you use and how you use it i.e. where you have positioned your attack. Heals are targetted. Dodging and avoiding attacks in general are essential though not infallible. There is also no autoattack. This is lacking from both GW2 and WoW and really changes the feel of combat.
There is no individual housing in GW2 and WoW.
There are no dungeons that ask you to make choices in GW2 and WoW.
Questing in pace and spacing is more like Rift's than WoW's. The paths are actually extremely important for adding to gameplay too. Depending on what path you chose at the start you will have to do certain things to increase your vocation level that you do not have in other games. These quests are much larger in scope and take longer to complete. Also unlike in WoW and GW2 some quests are set up more like puzzles than anything else.
You do not have as many dynamic events.
There are minigames that you have to play while questing or doing combat. Sometimes actiivation of a usable object requires succeeding at a minigame.
Classes and races are very different from the other two games. At the moment my Engineer and Esper don't really remind me of much of anything in the either two games. I thought the Esper would be a bit like a Mesmer but it really isn't since it has access to heals. The Engineer is a bit more like the one from GW2 but seems to be more of a tank.
Crafting is different. You can play a minigame and add stuff to your recipe to change the effects of whatever it is that you are making.
There really is very little that is exactly the same.
Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
Nothing when beta testing it everything about it reminded me about al lthe other themepark games out there..
Its well made and works well like most of the other AAA themeparks.. I guess the only difference is that it is based in a sci-fi world.
I am sure other people will say I am wrong and then list numerous tiny little things that are different from other themeparks but there we go. Overall the game feels and plays a lot like the others out there.
So if you like themepark games and if you like sci-fi then you may very well enjoy this game so give it a shot.. if you are looking for something totally different to shake up the mmorpg world then dont bother.
I am not bashing the game by the way i really think if you like this type of game then you will enjoy it.
From both:
- Crafting
- Combat
- Setting (SciFi) (Humor)
- Best Housing in any MMO
- Collectable commic books
From WoW
- Shiphand missions, Adventures, events... more types of PvE content
- Adventures
- Skillbar with lower numbers of skills
- AMP system which actually allows character diversity in a class
- Monthly new big content patches (assumably also much bigger then GW2s living content)
- The whole game is much more active then WoW.... you just cant slack a seccond... need to be on your toes even in PvE.
From GW2
-Story (much more in WIldstar)
-Raids and actuall endgame content
-PvP setting
-Gear progression
- Trinnity.. the game has action combat combined with the trinity
And much much more smaller things, it actually feels like a fresh game to me... with not only a gameworld to explore, but also a lot of game features to explore.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
I will say that I played ESO for maybe an hour before I was completely bored and fed up with it.
I've played Wildstar for a few hours and still want more.
It's like GW2 with housing and end-game.
Or like WoW with housing and better combat/questing.
There is a definite feeling of "completeness" w/ WS you NEVER really see at launch like you do here.
I think WS would be a perfect MMO to bring to consoles.
Why you have to say the C work on a MMO fan site? You trying to get flamed? BadSpock!!!!
The housing is ridiculous. If it were open world housing, people would call this one of the best pve sandboxes to hit the market in years. You can display 800 items in your house ffs lol
Crafting has its own progression path, quests, and talent trees for specialization, as well as the ability to discover new recipes while crafting and also customize stats on items.
The path systems offer unique activities that let you interact with the world around you much more. From building stuff in the open world, unlocking lore, discovering plant life that gives you an edge on the local fauna, hidden jumpin puzzles, even discover mini bosses that test your combat skill. Its pretty cool.
Game definitely feels like a sandbox/themepark hybrid.
Nothing really sets it apart from the other themeparks on the market currently besides maybe the housing, and there are several other games out there, such as Rift, that the housing system dwarfs WildStar. It's just not a very common feature in MMO's anymore.
Other than that it's the same mechanics every other themepark offers without much innovation. It is a whole lot of fun though and I would recommend you give the game a try myself, I have been enjoying it.

If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
Wait till they see what happens with guild housing and things start getting connected. Housing is a shell of what it will be when they roll neighborhoods out with guild housing.
Rift's housing is so disjointed from the rest of the game its not nearly as connected like WS. But Rift's housing is a lot of fun because you can create nice RP environments and jumping puzzles. I made a huge treehouse and it was awesome, I was very proud of my creation. WS just has way more utility though. Your house can enhance your crafting, gathering, you can make it a raid hub or even a battleground. And the customization and sheer volume of items you can place is probably the most I have seen in an mmo. And this is at launch lol. You see stuff like this in a 3-5 year old mmo and this one has it out the gate.
Well said
All Time Favorites: EQ1, WoW, EvE, GW1
Playing Now: WoW, ESO, GW2
That's my problem with WildStar's housing, it's pretty much forced upon you if you want a complete character or a min/max player. I have no interest in housing personally, I believe it should be optional and cosmetic and not affect the power and ability of your character such as crafting.

I can see that. Its definitely a sandboxy approach to housing. SWG was the same way. You even had to live in a crafting focused city plus have the best crafting stations plus the best tools and sockets in order to make the best gear.
Personally, I would be stoked if that was the direction carbine takes housing here. But I can definitely see that as a turnoff for people who dont enjoy that type of thing.
everyone from WS keeps beating others over the head with the "it has housing" stick
ppl dont realize there are LOTS of mmorpgs out there that do this and its just the same ppl that never played other mmos or enuff diff. mmo's with housing that get soo hyped for this feature in WS
and this concept of guild housing ..see EQ player housing see LOTR EQ2 RIFT VANGUARD just to name a few
i was in beta and there is really nothing new at all that this game brings to the table..its just a new shiny merry-go-round same ol same ol handholder
I love good crafting and housing systems in mmos. Its my main focus tbh. When I see new AAA mmos launching with this stuff you bet I'm going to be cheering it on. I want to see every new mmo launch with many game systems like this one has. I think games like WS, FFXIV, the changes Rift has made to its game, and even SWTOR are all a good sign that the genre is going in the right direction. More stuff to do that matters besides combat.
i agree100%
but question from OP what sets WS apart from other titiles..imho nothing other than it has a sci-fi element wich i wish more mmorpgs should do more often
You still need?
So I guess for you all that the rest of us have listed as being different from GW2 and WoW (the two games specified in the title) means that we are absolutely wrong and therefore WS is not worth playing because it is still a clone of WoW?
I really dislike this extremely jaded attitude that some posters on here have. Housing is not THE thing that sets WS apart, nor indeed its sci-fi theme. No other game has all of the elements WS offers, just like no other game has all of the elements that WoW offers, that GW2 offers, etc. These games are not clones of one another even if they share some elements.
I guess you have the same attitude towards books and movies: if you have seen one thriller no need to see any other thriller because they will all be exactly the same...
Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
maybe I am not a mmo player anymore cause I am not interested in this game.
looking forward to warhammer and EQN.
absolutely everething wrong, lol
may be gw2 and wow vice-verca?
