Looking for pay to play, buy to play, or free to play MMORPG

AralvarAralvar Member Posts: 34

Hey, I'm looking for a free to play, buy to play, or pay to play MMORPG.

I'd like it to have many skills and professions and such, like Runescape.

Also, I'd like the death penalty system to not be full loot. I enjoy Runescape's "keep your best three items and lose everything else" system but I am okay with no gear loss penalty as well, just as long as I don't have to worry about losing my best stuff (that's how I like to play, if you have a problem with it you can kindly leave me alone).

I'm also not a fan of a certain durability system, where your items are destroyed permanently eventually after being repaired X amount of times or receiving X amount of damage.

Those are my two biggest pet peeves. I have some others like I think everyone does, like gender and race locked classes (unless it makes sense within the game world) and such.

I've heard of WoW of course, but I've seen so many people say it's really gone downhill. And unlike Runescape, they do not offer an official old school server. I'm not interested in playing on illegal private servers either, sorry.

And of course I keep mentioning Runescape, I enjoy it but I'm looking for something else that has some of what are in my opinion the best features of the game but hopefully without the grinding and maybe some more interesting combat and quests.

I have tried Eldevin, nobody plays it for some reason. I see around 100 players total online at any given time, that's not enough for me.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Achaea - Only XP death penalty. Lots of crafting skills (Forging, Tailoring, Jewelry, Cooking, InkMilling). Items don't have durability, they just "decay" (very slowly) over time. So a nice sword will last you about 250 days before it crumbles apart and you need to forge a new sword. No race/class lock, and you can pick your stat distribution, so any race is good for any class.

DDO - Fun game, bit like WoW but with much better dungeons, however item durability and vendor repair is a thing here. You can buy things from the cash-shop to make your items permanent, if you want.

I was going to say Eldevin, but you've already tried it.

Ah, well Achaea's system is exactly what I don't like sorry to say. Items that become unusable or destroyed after a length of time, not my thing. And I have played DDO as well.

Thank you for your suggestions though! :)

It will be pretty difficult to find an MMO that doesn't have item durability / decay in some form or another. Most game economies treat item repair as a "gold sink", so that players are constantly plunking gold on NPC vendor repair, to prevent inflation. You might like Achaea's system in that regard because the item stats don't decay, and you never need to repair the item for durability. It simply just vanishes after 250 days (almost a year). So if you know you have like 10 days left on your sword, just... forge a new one.

Well I like item durability, just not permanent durability loss. Like, I'm okay with having to repair my sword every now and then, but I don't like it when my trusty sword becomes permanently unusable at some point. Just something that bothers me, that's all.

The only game I could advice is Istaria.

There are more than enough crafting and combat classes. Each goes up to level 100, multiclassing allowed. So - you train your class to lvl.100, then switch to class B, level it to lvl.100 and alike.

Items do not wear/decay at all.

No PvP, hence no one would attack you and loot that precious Sword of Owning.

However, the game is really playable only for paying customers. If you pay, you can choose race other than Human. Hey, you can become a Dragon and fly in the sky! If you pay, you can own a plot of land and build your own city.

Bad thing is graphic if you are fan of top-level one. Istaria looks really outdated there. Population is a bit low, but mostly helpfull. Some players (like me, when I played) may just sit/run waiting for someone to call for help.

So, no PvP at all? Not even in designated arenas or anything?

...and you are asking a person who always avoids any PvP, designed area or not (and who never does PvP)...

As far as I have heared there are some specific areas where players can PvP. If I recall it, they are called "Arenas" and have some NPC so that you can assign yourself into team.

What happens next - no idea, i.e. if winner loots anything and loser loses everything or money only or something else.

As I mentioned in another thread: One of the best crafting games on the market atm is Therian Saga. It's browser based and quite similar to runescape except for the fact you only need to queue crafting, not actually sit there and click 1000000x times.

Unfortunately, it has a slightly wonky combat system.

actually i like therian's combat system quite a lot - it is really simple but it fit that game imo really well.

OP, can you give us more informations about what you are looking for?

how important is pvp for you?

do you want open world pvp, bgs or none?

do you want spend a lot of time questing or rather just kill mobs?

how important is graphics and what is minimum you would consider?

    etc.

the more info you give the better we could suggest some game.

(personally first game that came to my mind is repopulation, but only because i played it yesterday, it is still more or less in alpha)

Atlantica Online is reasonably okay as free to play games go

it's turn based combat, you have your main + 8 mercs to fight with, there are more than 8 merc types in the game

the cash shop is a pig however, but you can avoid it

The Secret World is reasonably okay as well

    combat is a little clunky

but your free to develop your own individual skillset to play with.

Got an email this morning telling me Black Gold is going into open beta on the 20th, so go check that out. No character wipes going into release because it will be F2P.

So, go check that one out.

sounds like you might like villagers and heroes. its a newer game, free to play on steam. lots of crafting skills, mining, tailoring, woodworking, and many more. lots of loot, dungeons, and class skills. there is item durability but its not too bad and you can make repair kits to carry with you in case your gear needs a quick repair while your out adventuring. you can also build your own house and use it as storage, and at your home you can grow crops to sell or use, and raise animals to harvest like fleece from sheeps, etc

Okay, I might check it out, thanks. :)

Meh, it's a map view game that uses the typical browser game energy system that makes you wait to keep playing. Not my cup of tea. Thanks though.

I need the game to have some form of safe just-for-fun PvP. Where people can go and fight each other without death penalties. A hardcore PvP mode where you lose stuff would be cool for when I'm (rarely) in the mood for that.

Open world PvP is fine, not sure what bgs means sorry.

Graphics are not important. I will not consider text based games, but I will play games with poor 3D or good 2D graphics as a minimum. For example, Ultima Online style graphics would be awesome as I love isometric games. I would also play a game with Morrowind type graphics, like I said it's not very important to me.

Unfortunately the Repopulation has the repair system that I can't stand. I know it's an economy feature but I know there are other ways of balancing the economy without me having to lose my cool stuff haha.

Yes, I like playing MMORPGs and actually care about my stuff that I earn, I guess I'm in the minority.

hm if low player count is a big minus, that more or less eliminate istaria, ryzom, xsyon, wurm and haven & hearth

you could try darkfall, i never did, because it has ffa pvp with full loot, so i dont know about the repair thing, but i did hear they recently opened pve server

if you dont mind something different, try eve

if by a lot of skills you dont mean exactly skills you train by using but simply a lot of choices to learn.use, you can try either TSW, which has ability system (you get instead of levels ability points that you spend on abilities which you can more or less freely mix) or FFXIV, where you can learn all classes with single char and use some of the abilities of nonactive class

edit: or you can try asheron call 2 (never played ac1) if the servers are open
