Star Trek Online: Update 9.5 to Feature a Comprehensive Crafting Overhaul

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

A short developer diary has been posted on the Star Trek Online site that should be of keen interest to players in general and crafters more specifically. According to executive producer Stephen D'Angelo, every aspect of crafting has been given the once over and reworked. Players can expect to see the changes when v9.5 goes live on the Tribble test server in late July.

Our goal is to have a crafting system that our players enjoy and are excited to use.  We’ll be providing detailed dev blogs on each aspect of the new system over the coming weeks, explaining how the system works and the reasons behind our choices. Be sure to keep an eye on the game news when you are not busy powerboarding on Risa during the summer event.

Read the full letter on the Star Trek Online site.

Didn't this game already revamp crafting once already?

No. You might be thinking of Champions Online, another Cryptic game, which revamped their crafting a couple of years ago.

Crafting at launch consisted of several separate crafting lines with specific skill scores.  It was changed to consolidate all the lines into one.  Not an overall per se, but definitely a change.

Nope, this would be the third version of crafting in STO. They changed it a few months after release.

The problem with crafting in sto is you really can't make anything great. Everything is tied up in the lame assed rep.system. Its like putting a band aid on a bullet hole. And its just for the dev's saying see we listen. So only if you can make the good gear tied up in the rep.system its a bs update.

You don't even have to really craft in NW to gain crafting levels without really making anything. You can just gather resources for crafting XP.

The current crafting system in STO has always been pretty bad.  I look forward to an improved system, because I think the rest of the game is great.

I never got how the game has currency. Isn't the Federation supposed to be a moneyless society? Especially for those enlisted in Star Fleet.

With crafting overhaul they mean to make sure the cash shop is going to play a big role.

"Crafting Maths Lock boxes coming soon to a solar system near you!"

Yup, the Cash Shop features strongly in the "crafting" in Neverwinter.

Of course, nothing from the Cash Shop is required, but those Cash Shop "helpers" certainly speed things up. You can buy your way to max crafting in a week, or you can grind it for 365 days (if you login every day without fail). Miss a day here and there and it will take you more like 2 years to max a crafting profession...

Agree with Torvaldr. DOff system is one of the reasons I like STO (next to Foundry, BOff building and the seasons). Crafting in STO was always pretty meh... nevertheless, I have a captain dedicated to crafting, with bank stuffed with particles and stuff. On a second thought, maybe I should start Exchange those, who knows the price change this revamp will bring :)

During the read of the blog entry it was like:

"We moved on through the whole process of crafting, introducing multiple schools for captains to level up in, a new user interface, and even new abilities for crafted gear that are not found in dropped loot." cool, finally new ideas and mechanics for crafting. Go on, dude.

"we are introducing more ways to earn valuable materials"  eeeeerr... thanks for devaluating my stash, dumbas.. khm.

"duty officers play a part in this new crafting  system" now, hold on for a sec. Stop right there. What do you want with the DOff system? I'll keep a wary eye on further details, hope you won't mess it up, dude.

(yep, not the brightest thoughts, I know... :) )

Why do I have a feeling that this will involve more cash shop items or more grind via reputation system....might be both :)

Yes, it would be far better if max crafting abilities were gained almost instantly - say after 4 or 5 minutes of playing.  Anything past that would be a "grind".
