If you had two items, lets say armor.

One is fairly non descript looking and provides ample protection for you in battle. This set can easly be purchased for relitivly little money.

You have the opportunitiy to get a second set of amor, it has the same stats as the armor above but is crafted in a way that looks totaly cool to you and very very few people have it and you know its pretty hard to get.

Assuming you would have to quest for it......

I put in the effort to get all the components needed for an Armoursmith to make me a set of R.I.S armour It took a few weeks, but I eventually got it and I had some pretty cool looking armour. It's even rarer now since the parts for it don't currently drop.

I have yet to start on the daunting task to get a full suit of Mando armour (the stuff Boba Fett wears). That stuff can take months to get, anyone wearing it draws a crowd especially if it's a complete suit.

I would work pretty hard to get cool looking armor. I am a graphics freak. I love good looking graphics which includes my character. I had some horrible looking pants in EQ2 but they were fairly good, but I just had to change them as I couldnt stand the look of them them. It was one reason I liked UO (ya the graphics suck now) but you alway bought a full plate set or something like that so you always looked good and complete.

I think its fun working for armor kinda like Monster Hunter. It takes awhile but its worth it, Then like 5 days later you want a new set of armor.........................life.

Well I will be happy with what I got, but I would level for it, not exactily search for it though. I'll find it eventually. If the enemies are levels below me though I might just forget about it.

I tend to be one of those that will work her butt off to get that one rare item that no one else has, or at least very little people have. It's not always easy but it can be fun and good for showing off.

I think someone already mentioned RIS armor in SWG, I loved it when I was finally able to put a full set together and hang it up in my house for friends to see and I my NightSister Bracer, which took me countless months and countless dead witches to get, was the pride and joy of my social outfit , even though it gave little other then visual appeal.

So yups, I'm a sucker for the cool stuff for sure.
