Anything close to it? I enjoyed the mixture of PvE and PvP content with an expansive world to wonder through. Archeage is on my list, but I am concerned it will not have enough open world PvE content. I have raided for a long time between WoW and Rift and the whole instanced dungeons has grown old. I don't want to be reliant on a specific strangers, at specific times, with a specific class composition to enjoy content. I enjoy the random incursions out in the wild with fellow players whether it be friend or foe. Teaming up to take down a set of difficult creatures is quite entertaining and builds a bond rather than glueing together players at random.

You need to check this out- https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1468280928/shards-online-a-customizable-sandbox-mmorpg#- Granted with 12 hours left on the KS campaign this one isnt going to fund- However, the devs (former UO Devs with a team which has worked on TES games,Warhammer animations and are actually capable in bringing their vision to life) have said they are looking into what to do if/when the KS fails- But this game will be made.
There was an pre alpha test last weekend and the foundations and systems already in place were well thought out and implimented.
This is the closest project I have ever seen to giving us an evolved UO- Not exactly UO 2... More like UO crossed with NWN (not the Neverwinter MMO but the actual neverwinter nights PC game) crossed with TES.
-You get the open world, skill based, non instanced housing, build your character exactly as you want him sandbox experience but complete with full modding tools and the ability to make your own 'shards' with custom rule sets. This is takin g things past even a typical fanatasy MMO and giving us Fantasy Shards, Steampunk style shards, Roman inspired shards etc...
You will also get an officially run server BUT player servers with a myriad of rule sets. This will allow servers to range from both FFA PVP to total PVE and everywhere in between.
It really has potential and a good foundation behind it. Plus with an already playable build (again- Pre Alpha) its more than an idea or a dream.
I second this. Shards Online sounds awesome. I love how moddable they're making it. Like, I don't like full loot/permadeath/whatever, and they make it so you can script everything to you're liking. So the people that like certain features can have it that way and the people that don't can have it their way as well, everyone wins. It's a great idea, in my opinion.
As far as I know, just Shards Online. There are a few other similar games to UO (although gameplay-wise they seem to lack in comparison) but the graphics are arguably only as good or worse.
Unfortunately Shards Online is far from finished and with the Kickstarter not being funded it will likely take much longer to get a finished product out.
DFUW is garbage, I play it but only for the combat when i hear people shout in coms "PVP PVP" I log in fight for half hour to an hour and then log off, there is honestly nothing at all to fight for in the game for me, and no content to keep me playing other then the random Battles.
If you are looking for something full of content, you are going to have to stick to looking at real sandbox style games, unfortunately there are not many games and most are not complete games either.
There is also Wurm Online, its a bit slower paced, perhaps a bit less PVE such as there are no dungeons, but there are old abandon caves that often times act as dungeons. It is however full of content, once you get used to the game there are almost endless things you can do.

"Vox Populi, Vox Deorum"
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Everquest Next looks to be something UO fans might like. Large open world with 5+ tiers/layers to the world with procedurally generated content, hopefully much better AI then most mmorpgs, no rail/themepark quest system, horizontal progression without levels, PVP of some sort, etc. Ways off still, but so far I'm seeing more UO/Sandbox elements then EQ/WoW grind/instance ones.
Shards and Albion Online both look interesting as well, if you want the same feel as UO, but "better" graphics goes to EQN.
I never post on this site but i had to log in to put a vote in for Albion Online.
Original UO was my favorite game to date. Albion Online looks to be the most promising upcoming game.
