onboard lan intermittent after a storm

bdk880bdk880 Member Posts: 9

Here is the story:

A lightning storm several weeks ago. Fried my cable modem. It would not power on at all. So, bought a new motorola sb 6141.

Kept getting intermittent outages after new modem set up. Sometimes every few minutes, and then sometimes every 1-2 hours. Called Comcast and he came out and said the cable was not grounded. A new electrical box was installed and whoever installed it did not reconnect the ground to the cable. He "rebuilt" all the lines. The good news is my upstream power levels improved as I thought they were borderline high and causing the frequent disconnects.

All was good for two days then started having outages again. So, I ordered a new modem from a different manufacturer. Today I noticed no internet, but it did not try to reconnect.  The LAN port was not lit up on my computer, but checking the device manager and adapter settings and the network adapter is showing as functional.

I then took the cable and connected it to the ethernet  port of my laptop and it immediately had a connection. Reconnected my desktop and had no connection. Reconnected to laptop and had connection. No dropped connections on the laptop either. So, I immediately ordered a NIC card.

Waiting on delivery of the other modem and the NIC card now.  Is it possible for the NIC integrated into my motherboard to partially work?  Do you think the storm could have damaged it? Or is it the new cable modem causing problems?  Guess I will try the NIC card first. Any suggestions or ideas would help. Thanks for your time.

Did your net connection ever work with the new modem?

Did you install it, and notice you can't connect with you computer but can connect with your laptop? Or did you install it, then have it work, and shortly after notice that the connection stopped working with your computer but continued working with your laptop?

Sorry I was not clear. My original modem died. I bought a new one- the sb6141, which has intermittent connection. After Comcast determined everything was fine on their end, I decided to order yet another modem by a different manufacturer to see if this would fix the intermittent connection problems. I am still waiting on delivery.

In the meantime, during a downtime for my current modem, I unplugged the cable and connected it to my laptop, and it worked. Plugged it back into my desktop and no connection. Repeated this several times.  This leads me to believe it is a bad NIC in my motherboard now, and not a modem problem.

Sounds like a NIC problem with motherboard then. Since the connection works occasionally, then stops working, it's unlikely to be software problem or configuration problem, and since the modem works just fine with your laptop it's unlikely to be any hardware problem in your modem. NIC in your computer is the most likely to cause problems.

It's possible for NIC on your motherboard to partially work. Electronic components do often start partially working/occasionally failing before they fail completely.

If you had not bought a new NIC already I'd suggest something like this because it's easier to install: http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethernet-Network-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00484IEJS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403170670&sr=8-1&keywords=lan+usb+adapter

Intermittent problems are common for electronics.  They are often the hardest to troubleshoot.  Glad you figured out your problem.

Sounds like a bad NIC to me too.

Of all things that could have fried, the NIC is probably the best. They are cheap and easy to replace, with a lot of inexpensive options.

I installed a NIC card today without any problems. Thanks all for the replies and the support. :)

Yes i had an on board nic do the same thing. Eventually stopped working all together.  Then a year later had it start working again and never had an issue with it since.

Same cables both times so it had to be the Nic, just no idea what the issue was and why it started working again either.

Just teach you a lesson, computers do very strange stuff from time to time:P

If you still have problems the issue is more than likely with your ISP. The issue would have been on their end in most scenarios right from the beginning for a problem that appears after a storm. Comcast tends to suck, lie, and do a poor job of things.

I found this to be so true in a Linux class I just finished. And also in a class where I learned hacking and defence.
