The North American closed beta for Perfect World’s Swordsman begins this week, and while we were in LA we sat down with the PWE team for a walkthrough of character creation, some background on the story, and then a brief hands-on demo.

Been playing this since the start of the latest closed beta, mainly just for a look see.

Not a great fan of the auto-goto questing. Nothing to stop you going off to explore, but I'm not sure how much is there to see outside the programmed quest routes. I'll take a wander off-track later today.

Now onto the UI / keybinding:

The UI takes some getting used to, to say the least. I picked the control interface that was stated as being suitable for people familiar with Neverwinter. I had to go back and double check that I'd actually picked the right option, as it was nothing like NW so I've no idea where they got that from. In fact I found all three interface options to be pretty awful. Hopefully they can make the Action option more like NW before full launch (likely to be phrased as open beta if PWE's track record is anything to go by).

The Keybinding - didn't accept extra mouse buttons, which NW (and every other game I play) does quite happily. I also found keybinding couldn't be done with fairly common (for me) buttons. I like to use up/down/left/right keys for movement and keybind other keys around these. Wouldn't accept Numpad0-9, and wouldn't accept any of the extra function keys on my gaming keyboard.

I looked on the game's faq site about this. Their response was simply that if a button or key wasn't working then don't use it. Cannot fault the logic with that lol.

I'll carry on through this beta and see how things go. Hopefully some of these things will change before release.

I just got my female venom warrior to lvl 20. It seems like it will be a fun game. But you are right about it being PW. It will be about getting you to spend money in the cash shop.  And i think they gave out way to many closed beta keys. It gets way to laggy and quest npc's are buried under all the players standing around them. It feels like open beta. But the running along roof tops is a blast that you should really try. I spent an hour just doing that to get better at it. I always wanted a game that let you do that roof top to roof top leaping

I can't do the auto-pathing thing. That just takes away from a game so much. And you can say don't use it, but the game is obviously built around it.

    Level 35 at the moment.

It's clear that Swordsman is a much more linear game than AoW. Autopathing is indeed a big problem that adds to that, your character will even automatically use teleport functions to get to his questgiver.

I was very unhappy with the game yesterday, however, in the last few hours it did start to open up. The turning point was getting the second combat style for my sect (Sun & Moon), which makes things a lot more interesting. I had some PvP happen already and the battles I fought were fun (though I'm suffering from stuttering and lag).

The game definitely doesn't focus on you "living" in the Jianghu like AoW however. So I'm wondering if it will keep me over in the next few days of the beta.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Had the same issue with the control scheme, it was very clunky no matter what control scheme I chose.  This totally turned me off on the game.

Also it really doesn't appear to have any of the sandbox aspects of Age of Wushu which is a disappointment however I have to admit, I didn't get very far into things.

All PW games come with auto pathing. Had to know this would too.

The answer to this article's question: , It depends on who you ask because they are two completely different types of games. Yes, they both are based on the same thing but the games gameplay itself is very different. Age of Wushu is more of a sandbox game and more open for the player whereas Swordsman is definitely a linear, themepark experience.

So basically it comes down to whether you prefer sandbox games or themepark games.

To be honest Swordsman is a better game in almost every way. Age of Wushu is more of a trade skiller game.

As far as being linear both games are the same. Age of wushu just gave you something to do on the side. The storyline is just as linear as SO. Might even be even more limiting. Because AOW does a bad job at story telling. This is where SO shines. It does a very good job at story telling and events.

Age of Wushu character customization sucks. And that's putting it nicely. SO has pretty good character customization. But bad defaults for it. So people who don't know how to make decent faces will struggle.

SO combat is far better than Wushu's. Wushu has weird sliding and placement problems in almost every skill. Basically Wushu the in thing is to"Spin to Win". Do that in SO people going to curb stomp you. SO problem again is default settings in this area. If you use 3D controls and cut on zone it. You now have traditional fluid combat. All of that isn't default. So unless you know you will end up with clunky hard to move fighting. With this set up I move just as easy, as I would in Dragon Nest or Kritika.

SO sound is better than Wushu's hands down. It has more dungeons than wushu. And so far better gear distribution. The only place Wushu wins is Jianghu living. Basically trade skills and those little minor things like rare events. That's basically it everything else wushu loses. And not to forget Snail games is a way worse cash shop company that PWE.

Conclusion SO>AOW by a huge margin

The big question is, is it pay to win? I was pretty excited for this game but then I got an email for some leveling pack even before the closed beta had started. Might give it a go though if someone of you can confirm it's not pay to win

    Chinese P2W.

The games are totally different gameplay styles. The only similarities are they use China as a backdrop. Age of Wushu is a PVP oriented sand box that's level progression system is a bit more fair for a new player. Swordsman Online is a theme-park vertical leveling system mmo.

I've been trying out both Swordsman Online today and ArchLord 2. Both are in closed beta. Of the 2 so far I like ArchLord 2 a bit more. The controls on ArchLord 2 are intuitive to me. Swordsman Online controls are not like anything I'm familiar with.

SO's 3 control options all feel pretty odd to me. Even their "action" option doesn't feel as fluid as the controls in Tera or Neverwinter. I wish they had! That style of combat is my preferred option if it's available in a game and what I enjoy in playing those 2 games. The hybrid - what the game calls "classic" style - doesn't feel like GW2 either despite what the Massively guy reported.

Oh...when you see the screen that explains the 3 control options - Swordsman Online is always referring solely to other PW games. ESO does not refer to Elder Scrolls Online but rather is referencing PWI's Ether Saga Online (which I used to play way back in the day). JD = Jade Dynasty, FW = Forsaken World and of course PW = Perfect World (the game, not the company).

I liked Swordsman Online quite a bit but I'm absolutely LOVING ArchLord 2! Wow! Just Wow!

Playing Now: The Secret World, Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter

Playing soon: Landmark beta, Swordman beta

Swordsman Online probably will top Age of Wushu.  Inasmuch as we're repeatedly told that sandbox play is the future, much of its appeal lies in how well the game pulls off its sandbox features.  AoW remains unpolished, at times impenetrable, and suffers from one of the worst cash shops of any Chinese import.  SO has all the polish that AoW lacks, along with better visuals, a more approachable story, better customization, and a world that's much easier to apprehend.  Its questing is nothing to write home about, nor most of its environments, and there isn't nearly the depth of choice.

Still, for the target market-- wuxia lovers, MMO fans looking for a new world to play in, and PvPers looking to mix it up in the open world-- SO delivers enough and at a higher quality that I believe they will rather quickly outpace AoW.  Not to mention the elephant in the room: AoW is a game where the older the game gets, the more disadvantaged new players are at the start, something that is less conducive to bringing in new blood.

I've never understood why PW puts out game after game after game after game. I don't really understand how they keep a playerbase in any of their games; do the old games actually get any updates? I don't see how if they do. Age of Wushu is what, less than a year old?

i will agree the auto pathing takes away from the game but there map needs some improvement i would say the quest should be lit up or more logically placed on the minimap, maybe and dare i say it dont get mad, but world of warcraft as there is an arrow that tracks on the minimap till you get to the area then there is the number and area lit in a color mmmmmm. well that might take work on there part for the fact that there map system is highly instanced, but there is work to be done dont give up perfectworld listen to the feedback. as for the cash shop yes its needed but dont follow the blizzard method, i refuse to visit there overly priced out of there mind store xxx-blizzard lose points for that choice and they know what i mean. all the same the cash shop is needed that is how they will make there money the game is free to play so i would say take the trion worlds approach aka RIFT online where a few bucks gets you plenty of gems and they break down the items and types costumes, skins, mounts, pets, buffs, make plenty of customes or should i say vanity gear one of the biggest features to anny of the games in this genre is the fact that  i can truly look how i want stand out from the rest and make the occasional one of akind game play vids, to make myself a name and you know who you are and by the time your done reading this you will have already posted your selfie vids hahahaha but its all in fun. all in all this game has its own look, im still playing it and learning more on the features setting up a group i think will actually make yourself friends and weed out the jerks you have to invite people to your team and you get to pick them out or you can stop people as your questing and chat right there then add them to group duel them and add them as friend and do instance and events that way, there is so much more to talk about but ive talked enough the game is worth playing try and enjoy

Hi, I'm playing the game but i'm only lvl 20 and like I saw here lvl 35 will a cap changer. The only thought I want to leave is: Why don't you/we try to compare this game with  Yulgang 2. I've tried AoW but didn't really liked it, so can't compare with. My character is with the House of Tong and for me the biggest flaw is when you fire you stand still can't move I've picked a ranged kind thinking it would be possible to move while you attack, it is not the case.

age of wushu combat is too complicated but they have alot of extra continent and they have been up and running for a while i like swordsman guild quest and dailies and events system but this game is still new and needs work to get the market in my opinion take the world of warcraft approach give me lfg q's dungeon battlegrounds and raids and event challenges it will get more people interacting lots of people wont understand the way to use the system as it is now and find it to complicated to use and just give up simplify and youl have lifers and keep making content once released i would insist that everyone watch there tv show you can find it on youtube and torrentz swordsman 3 theres 58 episodes and the story line of the game and charaters follows the tv show that impresses me because i know the npc's i come across while playing the game and i know there role the drunk guy who saves you at the very beggining of the game is the main character in the novel he is nosey and saves anyone in danger and becomes the top martial artist in there world awesome story and the main enemy don fon bu bai the chick in all red she falls in love with the hero as well he to her but she kills herself to make him happy in life but final episode she opens her eyes while laying at the bottom of the lake supposedly dead so long story plenty of room for content and ling phi zhi is another main hero that kilss the main heroes junior sister and he is sworn by junior sister to not kill him but by junior sisters mom to be killed to revenge him killing junior sister and he is alive locked up and there are plenty of villans that wont to run the pugilistic world so age of wushu loses this fight and swordsman has upper hand just at the q for groups and its done no contest and get rid of auto run to quest and improve map
  • mrbowser81mrbowser81 Member Posts: 27
yes archlord 2 released yesterday and its impressive by far but its beta so only 2 races to play its very dry cut and buggy this is test 1 so dont get madd from the glitches but this one keep your eyes on dungeons start at lvl 10 and there is raids as well as pvp and there quest and map system flawless victory so i will keep playing and watching the improvements made side not all games should give us the players control of customizing the ui as we want side note give us that please
  • RusqueRusque Member RarePosts: 2,785

Tried the beta. Game is so bad it should feel bad. Bad. AoW isn't great, but it's waaaay better than this PoS.

  • mrbowser81mrbowser81 Member Posts: 27
so all complaints on controls its beta but you can customize i use action and the control key switches it on and off click it to move in quest mode to turn off action and when ever you go combat switch action on the aimed attack is awesome and i have my block key bound to "S" so w= forward a= left strafe d= right strafe and s= block my attack keys are bound on my razor naga mouse any regular gamer should already own one 30 to 50 bucks get one other than that no issues with controls so dont be detured by control comments there fine and note when you begin to get your other fighting  stances you can custom your action bar with attacks from any of your stances i use ranged cast and fist attacks and heals left click fist attack then i can cast ranged attacks and stuns and heal my party members loving the game

If you've played either Swordsman or Age of Wushu, you've basically played them both. The differences are relatively minor between the two.

    Icon-action.png
    • The mode of true Swordsmen!
    • Use the keyboard to move and combinations of mouse and keyboard to attack. In the mode, you can perform many skilled action.
    • Suggested for players familiar with Neverwinter.

The above is copied from the guide site accessed via the Arcgames portal. But it is nothing like Neverwinter. They need to work on this Action format, together with opening up keybinds to standard keys and mouse buttons.

This game has to many issues. Chat system is bad auto pathing is insane. Combat is clunky not to mention the combat in swordsman is easier compared to age of wushu. Everyone does auto lock so u dont miss skills but in aow its pure skills taichi sword taichi fist switching between styles in animation also the block system is alot more elite in aow compared to swordsman. Swordsman is nothing but another buton smashing downgraded version of aow. Its easy mode version of aow. Also p2w
  • aligada87aligada87 Member UncommonPosts: 234
Also open world pvp in aow is more rewarding
