It has a damn good track record of "convincing" everyone who bothers to try it. Hopefully, the people who have this weird VR-phobia will do that at some point.
Anyway, as for MMOs being "ready", I wish they would be, but I think it'll be one of the last genres to adapt to VR, for a few reasons:
MMOs tend to lag behind other genres in general, for understandable reasons. Doing anything new in MMO design is just much higher-risk than in other genres, and as such, I think MMO developers will be more cautious than any others about VR.
MMO standards are currently some of the worst-suited to VR of any genre. Big, bloated 2D interfaces floating in front of your face, obscuring the 3D world, are much more obnoxious in VR than on a monitor. So are all the crazy particle effects, superhuman speeds, constant jumping, invisible walls, and camera clipping. Even if, like me, you're someone who doesn't experience motion sickness, this kind of stuff is just monumentally annoying when you feel so much more present in the world. MMOs are visual clusterfucks.
MMOs take a long damn time to develop. I think it's clear that the best experiences in VR will be indie games for a good long while because they're able to jump in on-the-fly compared to AAA titles, while obeying the Best Practices.
agreed.
plus I MMO users will be in that enviroment for a long time in one sitting and some players like to multi-task or multi-box.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Speaking from more experience than even your average dk1/qr owner, it is not better, and it does not enhance gameplay. If anything, it makes gameplay more difficult and cumbersome. I'm an avid technonerd, I own several VR units from throughout the past 20 years, as well as dk1. I also use other ocular hardware like glass and have used the VR/vision packs from MIT. VR is not going to be truly game changing until we're looking at contacts or something similar. All of the current, proposed, and previous solutions are just not meant for extended wear and do not deliver a very smooth experience.
Are we getting there? Yes. Each and every day we pour money into VR we are getting closer. Is the future now? Absolutely not. I would question the validity of anyone who thinks that's the case.

ok that needs some clarification.
Why are you buying all these VR devices if you think it doesnt enhance game play?
You say you own a DK1 is that correct?
I would like to talk with you about some specific demos and why you think its not enhancement of game play because I do.
I dont see it explictly as it stands but i can see how the hardware is ready but the sottware just needs some dev time nothing more

Who cares how 'sexy' it is and why should I care if some judgemental, superficial hipster thinks less of me for using one? They can mind their own business and go and be 'cool' somewhere else. I'll be doing what I enjoy in the mean time.

I don't think the OR will break MMORPGs into the 'next generation'. But it'll be a cool way to view the existing content. I don't think MMORPG developers would make their simple games anything greater with VR.
I do think we could actually see theme parks for what they're worth in actual first person view. Standing in some place like one of the downtown sprawls in City of Heroes and looking up to see friends and foes zipping through the air would be a nice touch added to the experience.
Now when we can have that sort of tool and integrate it into... Shooting bows, aiming cannons, picking locks, checking for traps.. RPGs will move onward. We'll see more innovation out of smaller scale multiplayer games decades before anyone in the MMORPG market would dare to try and put it into such a game.

I have not yet tried the Oculus Rift personally ... but I know it's going to be amazing.
As I was reading through the posts, someone asked what makes it more fun than playing on a flat screen.
The feeling of presence drastically changes the way a person reacts and interacts in a game. Interacting with NPCs can be improved greatly. You will be able to have better connections and form better bonds with NPCs and other players.
Not only that, but it also changes perception of the world. Looking at a big tower on a flat screen would be nothing like looking up at a tower in VR. If you ever been to a city with skyscrapers ... you know the feeling.
Your fears and emotions are more likely to come out in a VR world. Stand over an edge of a cliff on a flat screen and you think "Look at the nice view". Stand over the edge of a cliff in VR and you think "Woah ... this is really high up!" ... you take a step back before you lose your balance.
Scared of spiders? In a flat screen game you can deal with it. How well do you think you would deal with it in VR?
Jumping out of an airplane on a flat screen probably is just cool to you. In VR, it can be pretty scary, exciting, cool, sickening, and fun.
TL;DR: It honestly changes the entire experience. What is fun on a flat screen is very different then what is fun in VR. So much so, that VR needs games particularly designed with VR in mind to work best.
Do I think VR will come to MMOs? I hope so. All a game company needs to do is work it in at the right time and we could see another WoW on our hands. I think VR is just the change of pace MMOs have needed.
Is VR a niche? Oh most certainly. However, I don't think it will remain as such in the next few years. I can see it becoming pretty big. Actually I would be really confused if it didn't. From what I can tell of past reactions, it will not be an issue.

The Oculus Rift has a better chance than 3D tech just largely due to the audience they're marketing towards.
Talking a family into paying 1k on a TV, 200 more bucks to start with 4 glasses, 50 a pop each if more people wanted them, plus Sony and others propriership over the tech hampered that tech. It's cool, but tv watching and movie viewing is a more social experience. Also the majority of 3D content for home was a crap experience. The content sucked*. (content is king)
MMOs and video games are social as well, but 90% of that is now done across the network with people at their own stations. Plus the price point is well within what gamers will pay even just for the gadget factor.
Content will prove if the OR sticks around or not.

I watched a video of people from various parts of the world communicating with each other in a VR theather and yet the CEO of Take Two the creators of GTA series thinks that virtual reality is in his words...'anti-social'....lol as if blowing people up in a game is not.

Since DK2 is what I was looking at, I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to point out DK1.
I suppose it could be an assumption that consumer would be better than DK2 because DK2 was better than DK1?
Although I believe you're likely right about consumer, you can't assume that.
I also have NO IDEA why facebook would buy it. To me, it is neither good nor bad, just odd.
I am looking forward to that.
Despite being skeptical, it will be interesting to see what it can do (not unlike the 3DS).
