Do you need to have your account active for the WoD beta key to work?

I have an inactive WoW account and when I put in the beta key, it says I need to have mop or something.

    Not sure missed them, but MOP is Mists of Pandaria so it sounds like you need that first.

    I'm having the same problem, someone on another thread ask  a GM to sort it and they did, i've submitted a ticket and am waiting now

    Submit a ticket then, my account is frozen but it can be sorted if you ask
