Alright, here is how it is: You will be waiting alot for parties,no joke about that. Personally I lvl my crafting skills or fish while I wait. I even chat with my friends or linkshell at the same time. If u believe u won't be able to tolerate the wait then don't play FFXI. Don't get me wrong,I love the game but the wait is long.
I played this game for a good while but i did not reach the higher lvls so i didnt have huge problems with getting partys but this was also when the game first came out.
What are the reasons that getting a group is so hard?
Is it because there isnt many higher lvl characters so you have to wait for the few that are higher lvl?
well ive decided to get it cause im tired of Lineage2 for now. ill see about coming to that server. just gotta get to ebgames tomorrow

Well that is not very accurate from my experience. I played FFXI a long time too. If anything, there are far more high level players at this point, than low level ones. For instance, you much more easily get a pt from lvls 70-75 than from levels 20-25.
The game has been out so long that most low levels are actually long time players that are leveling another job.
Personally, a reason I wouldn't start this game at this point, is because the economy is really crazy. RMT hase driven everything to be ridiculously priced. And unless you want bottom of the line gear, it will take you a lot of time farming and whatnot to get the gil to catch up. Unless you plan on buying gil...in which case, it will get pricey...
Im thinking of trying this game out also, but i have one question. Will I have to have atleast 5 hours of playing a day to even get anywhere?
I can honestly say no. I never have over 3 hours playing time a day and don't play everyday, yet still have great fun and with planning, I am able to do anything without great difficulty.
If I leave myself LFG while doing something else I can find a party fairly quick as a mage job and have a full and extended time partying. This results in no disadvantage to my character, despite my sometimes restricted play times.
Mages and Bards are the way to go to reduce your time LFG.
Start with WHM (I say WHM for teleports). Finish sub job quest, then work on your sub as BLM.
Level BLM to 25 then work go back to your WHM level that to 37
**read ahead you don't have to level that way, but hopefully you'll understand why**
Now, you gotta decide if you want to be a support mage or a dd. Whatever it is make sure you take your sub job to 37. Now, you're clear to level your main job all the way to 75 (Keeping in mind you have level caps quests at 50-55-60-65-70).
While you are waiting for parties which shouldn't be too long. Work on making money by crafting or farming. Doing both is ideal. You will need to money to buy up to date spells.
I believe this game can become really fun for anyone by planning and finding a good linkshell. Ls's have taken me a long way in FFXI and I've been bored on very few occasions. The fact that u can at any point change to another job and lvl it at the unlikely event there is nothing better to do is a major plus of this game. Honestly I don't know if this game is for the casual player. Never been in such a position. But I honestly don't find it that much of a time sink as some ppl present it to be. Everything I do,personally, has its purpose may it be in the present or the future.
