Importance of Cleaning dust

CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

For the last couple months, my Phenom II x6 was hitting excessive heat under full load. I render 3D graphics which uses 100% of all 6 cores consistently for hours. My temps have been touching 83C. I figured it was dust so I blew CO2 through the cooler but it made no difference.

This time, I reseated the CPU heat sink completely, removed the CPU fan, and made sure to get every speck of dust out of the fins. Now its topping out at 55C.

New thermal paste as well? it might have been your problem.

Also, i vacuum clean my laptop vents. Only  have to make sure to block the fans with something so that they don't spin wildly in all directions. :P

It sounds like your thermal compound was at the end of its life.  Dust only creates a problem if it blocks airflow.  If there is enough to block airflow, it will be visible on most heatsinks.
