[Poll] - What Makes a Good MMORPG?

I have been working on making an MMORPG. My goal is to make this game pleasing to everyone in one way or another. I have here a list of things that make an MMORPG. Choose what one you think is the most important. After choosing, post what you think of that you would like to see in an MMORPG. Your ideas may be about adding, improving and anything about the topics in the poll.

Your choice will be greatly appreciated and I will try my hardest to listen to your choices and ideas.

Thank You

I would have to say Gameplay which makes a good MMO over graphics.

Unfortunitly, people don't even pay attention to that which they would rather judge the game by the graphics. And rather that some MMOs with good gameplay are rather underrated.

Good example of a game like that would have to be nexus:kingdome of the winds.

    played that for 4 years

  • nexennexen Member Posts: 55

    Gameplay, obviously.

Everything else on the list wouldn't keep someone playing for longer than a month without excellent gameplay to support it.

Good luck creating your mmorpg.  If there's one thing I am sure of, it is that you will not make a mmorpg that will please everyone.  Every player has different things they enjoy in a mmorpg.  The poll is a good idea to get the opinions of people that visist this site, which is a pretty good community of gamers.

So far, I am pleased that Roleplaying has so many votes,  this is what I think makes a mmorpg really great.

good luck with your mmorg...but you will never please everyone...theres always someone who thinks its not as they want it to be...

I think Roleplaying is the most important part, or at least, its what attracts the most people to the game, although i would like a good storyline too =)

forgot one...community, although im not sure how much control the devs have over that one
  • LeasaLeasa Member Posts: 449

I have to agree with Sephiroth9 the community is the most important to me.  I have played bad games with a good community and good games with a poor one.

Given my choice I would rather play a poorly designed game with a good community.  As was said before I don't know how the devs can control that unless there is a style of games that attracts a good community.

True. Problem is that he said "Gameplay/Battle System". The Battle System is only one *part* of the gameplay. I can easily imagine an MMORPG with everything I ever wanted in a battle system that I still wouldn't want to touch with a ten-foot pole.

I say the story line is the thing that make most mmorpg games better, also the graphics need to be top-notch also.

The main aspect, in my opinion, is immersiveness, a lively, breathing virtual world that gives you the sensation you're really there. Even World of Warcraft, with its cartoonish graphics, can be really immersive.

The second most important thing is exciting, strategic combat that does not become a repetitive task. This means a variety of skills so that the player can adjust and face various types of encounters.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

To answer your question, having good graphics can help a player become more immersed in an MMORPG. IMO it is much easier to "get into" an MMORPG where the world and characters look more realistic. Have you ever played a game where you have looked up into the sky and said, "Man, that sunset is amazing" or something along the lines of that?

I don't know why people say you can't control the community. Because Devs have made games that concentrate on Community, and have achieved great communities. There are certain elements that create a great community game. Depending on how you change certain gameplay elements or the look of the game could make the community act differently, or draw away people who don't like these elements that are negative to a community.

The actual community of a game is completely controlable. If you haven't noticed it then try some community driven games like the sims online, second life, there, and ragnarok online; you will notice a difference in how people acts, even differences among the games and the community ends up different. Also I mean really try these games, don't just log in go somewhere talk for 15 minutes then act like thats all the game had to offer.

Community is like "Sex" to me.  image

It is a nice extra, it might be what I will be thinking way to much about.  But is is by no mean the basic, I need a roof before (gameplay), I need food (solo/group), I need hobbies (End Game related to solo or grouping), than I will start to think about the community.

If the community lack, it is fine, it can easily improve with time, can get my RL friends to play if the basic is strong.  If the best community is in the worst game, I will quit within the week.

Happy players make a happy community (CoH pre-nerfs/Pre-Kunark EQ), unhappy players make a shitty community (most current MMOs).

There are a lot of things that should tie together well to keep intrest.

Graphics are what usually pull people into the game - at least the ones searching for a new game.
If they're searching and the graphics really grab their attention, that'll usually be enough for them to at least try the game.

But that, of course, is not the soul of a game. I agree with everyone, the community is definately one of the most important aspects - but as a developer or creator, there's not much you can do except fix the table for dinner and hope that the company arriving has good manners.

UI is one of the most important things to me. Make it to where the user can customize it.
If I can't see because of a bulky interface and I can't fix it, I won't be able to play.
    *shrugs* that's me.

I'm not quite awake yet, but I wanted to give my opinion.

Best of luck to you, I think it's awesome.
Let us get some sneak peeks when you can!

The same thing that a good book or movie needs...a good story.

  • Wolfpack75Wolfpack75 Member UncommonPosts: 43

My list from top to bottom:

Story...I find that a great story sucks me into a game. If I am intrigued by the storyline, feel like I am contributing to the story then I can ignore nearly everything else. Honestly if I feel like my character matters then I can ignore subpar graphics, I can ignore a bad community.
Gameplay/Battle System...I can't ignore this though, if the system is clunky and gets in the way then I can't become invested in the game.
Quests...To me go hand and hand with Story, I am sick of random NPC's standing around asking you to find 8 steaks, 3 eggs, and a feather duster. Especially when they are higher level than you are.
character customization...If my character looks like everyone else it makes it hard to believe I am unique...Okay really it is impossible to keep up the illusion if I see my twin, triplet, quadrupulet every time I log in
Roleplay...I am not big on RP but I feel that it is important for some people to become immersed in a game. It is the icing to the cake of storyline.
Stat/skills...I am so sick of games with levels and limited skills. Games need to expand on the freedom to be or do anything. I know it would be tough but I think a skill system which mirrors real world skills would be helpful for maintaining immersion and choice in a game. (Real world in that instead of being defined by a class the character would be a conglomeration of skills. After all we all have skills completely unrelated to our professions)
graphics/environment/interface...Graphics are not a big deal for me, if that was the only thing that mattered then I wouldn't play some games but at the same time they are important enough that I am not playing MUDS anymore.
PVP...If it is integrated into the game and isn't tacked on or disruptive to the storyline then I enjoy it. But too many games have very subpar PVP systems that seem to be afterthoughts and not really be an integral part of the game.
Items/weapons...The least important in my mind...I don't care if everyone is using the "sword of bob+3" if there is a logical reason for it.

    Not mentioned but also important:

Community...If a community is full of immature players who don't care about the storyline and instead wish to run around ganking others or ruining the game for others AND the devs don't enforce the EULA appropriately then you will lose a lot of gamers.

I am sure there are more that I could list

    First of all good luck!

A good MMORPG has the "feeling" and you want to play it more and more.
Of course the overall is important. But I'd say the gameplay. The graphics, damn don't just try to get 3d super mega grafics. Not the most important in a MMORPG. But of course it's quite important because that is what you "look" at when you are playing the game.

Also the website is important. The website need to have a proffisional look and easy asccessable content. Also acountmangement is important. This is also an important part of it.

A very very wanted features in MMORPGs are houses and guilds(halls). Also the PVP and exploring (alternative questing) part is important. To explore the hopefully big map/content of the MMORPG is funny and exciting and why not meet a good monster on your way?

Operatingsystem support is REALLY important. Support both Windows and Mac and Linux and other Operatingsystem to make your game playable on any computer. The requiriments should possibly be low and if you don't make 3d mega super grafics then the requiriments might be fine. If you would like a "3d mega super grafic game" then the requriments would be higher and probably less people to play your game.

Try to make a own unique style to your game. Not any copy or wannabee of any other game. Not to blame WoW but I can't say that game is unique. I don't have any example of a unique game but Runescape is quite unique. It takes time to make a MMORPG as you might now. Get some good programmers, designers and just go for it! Of course it is better if you can code/design yourself.

What more? Keep the players updated with news on your website and have a good community and forum on the website where the players can discuss the game and its' feature devlopement.

    Again - Good luck! ::::28::

    Regards,
    Mapleaf

I could use a few more votes
  • It's all the above...

IMO there isn't just one thing that's most important above everthing else. Almost everything on your list deserves special attention...Craftsmanship!

There isn't a single game out or soon to be released that has even the smallest particle of craftsmanship about it! High Quaity Craftsmanship is, apparently, a totally foreign concept to MMOG developers today and thats really sad. It's easy, for me at least, to tell when someone talented has put a huge amount of time and effort into a project...it shows!

MMOGs should be great works of art, after all your creating a world where people "live"! This is definitely not the case with any of the MMOGs we see now. Indeed, we won't see anything even remotely resembling craftsmanship, much less a "great work of art", any time soon.

Apparently making a MMOG is mind-bogglingly difficult; how much more so a "great work of art"!?

    Good luck on your project.

I think every item on the poll has a certain importance and should ALL be included in any new MMORPGS, especially character customization-

If you feel no connection to who you are in the game- If your just another clone in a sea of nearly identical mobs, then how will you feel any real connection to the game in general? It's just like in RL, If you don't like your self or your appearence or what you have done with your life- then you probably have a bad outlook on life in general. Most people play MMORPGs for the escapisim factor. If gamers cant make themselves more exciting in-game, then in RL, I know a lot of people who wouldn't play at all.

I would NEVER play a game where I didn't feel my characer was "special" for one reason or another.
