I don't know what the heck is going to happen with his game, but I think Claus is a good guy, too. I just wish he'd come and chat with us on f13 now and then but he really does seem to be hiding in the shadows these days.
The devs are great community wise I will agree but after following this game for what seems like forever I dropped off the band wagon. Seriously, i have lost any belief this game will come out much less even ,been in development way to long and have the upmost repsect for you people that hung in there for so long but really...
NM , hope the game does make it out ,cant say I wont try it but I have certainly lost all hope for this one, seems more like another DnL ,Dragon Empires...blah blah blah, name your own failed game.
Heh... I didn't even bother to go to the site until someone said it sucks, though I recognised the name. It appears that Claus doesn't even blog on his own site anymore! That was a pretty lame post about WoW, though, I have to say.
Man cant wait some of my friend reliaze how stupid it was to grind for all these items when wow release next expansion, which will no doubt have better items even if these were slightly better, but important part is that it will open whole new possibilities for grind new items.

It sounds like a mix between bitterness, jealousy, and frustration.
I knew this would happen to many mmorpg developers.
WOW may not be groundbreaking, but it did set the BAR for many different things.
1- Content (items, quests, weapons, armor, ect.): WoW has TONS of Content.
2- Community: WoW has a sick 5.5 Million player base.
3- Fun Factor: For a casual player to sit a play a few hours a day, this game is FUN. 5.5 Million people can't be wrong.
4- Development: This game was developed by people who are experienced in development, and had previous successfull titles.
WoW shows just what a big company can do. It frustrates startups and small MMORPG creators because he sets a bar across the board. Not so much for inovation but for hammering out what is already there and making it the best it can be.
WoW is a 2nd gen MMORPG but it gathered the Best of ALL 2nd Gen MMOs and came out with a universally polished game that has the best of all.
Any MMO that is trying to break new ground is still going to have to compete with the obvious.
1- Community
2- Content
3- Fun Factor
4- Development
When you are making a totally new renovating game it is VERY hard to hammer out all that.
He sounds frustrated and disheartened about his personal project as he knows like many that IF/WHEN Darkfall comes out.. it MAY be groundbreaking but will it be a success.. .. the odds grow smaller and smaller as WoW gains more and more ground.
Thousands of PVPers feel the same way as him, and the large majority of them are not developing an MMORPG.
Claus is first and foremost a gamer and a PVPer, then a developer. He is just expressing his view of the stale world of todays MMORPGs and WOW in peticular, and from some points of view he is totally correct!

That doens't make me very wrong though.
What you stated doesn't deny the fact that he is frustrated with it.
And his obvious exageration to WoW being so boring he would rather water plants shows his frustration, you dont' exagerate so greatly when you expect to be taken somewhat seriously.
That is like me saying.. "EQ2 is so lame I would rather stab my eyes with an ice pick", The exageration is not needed, but stated to show how biased I am against it.
True.. WOW is not a PVP rewarding game.
There is no MMO in the making is going to dethrone it for alone time.
Let me tell you what I know about alot of gamers.
1- Majority of MMO Gamers are not into PVP and dont' want to be penalized greatly for thier mistakes, we call them carebears. They make a large portion of what is out there.
2- There is a growing female community. I happen to know 3 female mmo players thathave or are playing GuildWars, WoW, and AC2. And they do NOT like PVP.. They want pretty, easy, fun, and they want to cummunity and RP over PVP.

He is not exaggerating, that is how he feels when he plays world of warcraft, I feel the exact same way, he is showing his frustration with how boring the game is, not its success.

ok let me put this in the simplest terms that i know so you can understand
1-Claus is a PVPer-he is expressing every PVPers thoughts and most of us (from Ultima Online, Asherons Call Darktide, Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot etc) agree completely-he is expressing himself as a gamer not as a game developer
2-i do know the majority of players are people who enjoy PVE over PVP, no problem with that, but for God's sake the developers of these PVE games have to come up with something more than the original Ultima online-Trammel ideea or Everquest 1
3- the growing female community does not concern me or Claus since we are speaking from a Gamer's (PVPers) point of view. They like PVe or PVP more power to them.
What you stated is that he is disgrunteled at a game that may compete with his and that is why he is bashing WOW-i dont believe this, he gave props (although you may not know) to games like Ultima Online AC DT and Shadowbane, which are all competitors to his game. He singles out WOW for its COMPLETE LACK OF ORIGINALITY and most PVPers agree, and thats what i mean that you are wrong completely.
My opinion is people will continue to play PVe games, and that will make developers continue the same old bs that started with EQ 1 and give people the easy way of playing a game, nothing to set them back, just grind and gring and grind, no consequences to playing a game badly. If most gamers what that good luck, we wont be a part of it.
its ok if you dont share my point of view, since you are a carebear, but good luck in your gaming endevours

Ok.. I will bite your bait for now.
So basically what you are saying is that because WOW has a lousy PVP system it is more boring than watering plants?
Ok.. understood.. I was under the assumption that what makes a game boring isn't just its PVP value.
You and him obviously keep throwing the PVP debate in the air as to why you think it is boring.
If he is developing DarkFall with a Complete PVP mindset with nothing more than PVP his game will not only be the most boring game ever, it will fail.
Next Topic.
PS- I am not a carebare. read my "the level flaw" post. I want full loot, pvp, no levels, PERMA DEATH. Nothign wrong with that. But I am not gonna be biased and say a game is boring the the aspect I like the most isn't in it. I can enjoy it for what it is.. Wich makes me a good gamer, and a good game developer. I hope Clouse understands that barrier.
It sounds like a mix between bitterness, jealousy, and frustration.

WOW may not be groundbreaking, but it did set the BAR for many different things.
1- Content (items, quests, weapons, armor, ect.): WoW has TONS of Content.
Quests...Yes. Although they were more akin to errands.
After the twelfth "Kill this animal and bring back X amount of X trophies from X creature." It really showed it's lack of originality.
Items, no, not at all. It really did not have that many items. It had the same item, with varying stats, and different names.
2- Community: WoW has a sick 5.5 Million player base.
I'll give them that. It is quite insane. That's what a name like Warcraft, Blizzard, and word of mouth, will get yah.
3- Fun Factor: For a casual player to sit a play a few hours a day, this game is FUN. 5.5 Million people can't be wrong.
Sure they can. That's like saying the american public can not be wrong for still supporting a two party system.
4- Development: This game was developed by people who are experienced in development, and had previous successfull titles.
Most of the dev's behind such famous titles that made blizzard popular either didn't work on WoW, or was still with blizzard.
WoW shows just what a big company can do. It frustrates startups and small MMORPG creators because he sets a bar across the board. Not so much for inovation but for hammering out what is already there and making it the best it can be.
Best in what way? Longevity fun factor? Or for making money. If you say the latter, your right. If you say the former, your wrong.
WoW is a 2nd gen MMORPG but it gathered the Best of ALL 2nd Gen MMOs and came out with a universally polished game that has the best of all.
Actually it's about the 4th generation...Or is it 5th. Anyhow. It's definitely not 2nd gen.
Any MMO that is trying to break new ground is still going to have to compete with the obvious.
1- Community
2- Content

Your right. And most developers lack the balls to even try.
He sounds frustrated and disheartened about his personal project as he knows like many that IF/WHEN Darkfall comes out.. it MAY be groundbreaking but will it be a success.. .. the odds grow smaller and smaller as WoW gains more and more ground.
People that develop games like Darkfall, or Roma Victor, don't have their eye on the money. Because if they did, they'd follow the route of a game like WoW. Cheap & Easy.

Of course he is. As am I, and many other veterans that are dissapointed with the stagnant growth of MMORPG's. And I don't mean stagnant in the sense of subscribers. But rather stagnant in the sense that almost nothing is feeling different in the genre. Some game is a clone of another, and another, with very little innovation, but only polished 5 year old idea's.
And his obvious exageration to WoW being so boring he would rather water plants shows his frustration, you dont' exagerate so greatly when you expect to be taken somewhat seriously.
I don't know...Sometimes I wished I was mowing the lawn rather than grinding away at WoW when I was two months into the game. It just got THAT tedious.
That is like me saying.. "EQ2 is so lame I would rather stab my eyes with an ice pick", The exageration is not needed, but stated to show how biased I am against it.
True.. WOW is not a PVP rewarding game.
There is no MMO in the making is going to dethrone it for alone time.
Dethrone it, in what way? Subscribers? Subscribers means jack. As shown by many eastern based games like L1 & L2. That although popular, found little favor in a community of educated MMOG'ers.
Let me tell you what I know about alot of gamers.
1- Majority of MMO Gamers are not into PVP and dont' want to be penalized greatly for thier mistakes, we call them carebears. They make a large portion of what is out there.
Most MMO gamers period don't want to be penalized. Hence shown by the popularity of games like WoW which is very casual, almost to the extent of the mindset of playing a singleplayer game, putting on god mode, or unlimited resources, and trying to beat the game the quickest.
Are they carebears? I don't know. My best guess is that most of the players in WoW are newcomers to the genre, and don't desire the competition, and difficulty of many veterans.
2- There is a growing female community. I happen to know 3 female mmo players thathave or are playing GuildWars, WoW, and AC2. And they do NOT like PVP.. They want pretty, easy, fun, and they want to cummunity and RP over PVP.
Yah, and I knew a 30 year old married woman that lived for PvP, another one that was 50, and played with her husband & son.
Saying, "I know 3 female gamers that don't like PvP." really proves nothing.
"Fear not death; for the sooner we die, the longer shall we be immortal."
This topic is not about Darkfall's potential as a game (and yes it is a complete PVP game)
this topic is about a PVPers opinion on a game that is very boring, and he is 100% correct, and im glad you understood that.
and of course in no way shape or form will DF be anywhere as successful as WOW, i will admit that, but for a PVPer, yes it will be. A games success is not only measured by how many people buy the game, but how many people from that gaming niche buy it. Therefore as a PVP game, if the game is good, and will have more subscribers than a game like Shadowbane, then yes, yes it is a success.

I dont see how you interpet his being a smartass as bitterness or a lack of sincerity.
The post is almost a year old now, WoW has improved its pvp a bit, but by no means is it much better...
I agree with him WoW is boring. Its pointless. The world is the same static, boring, sad excuse for a mmorpg as it was a year ago. Most mmorpgs are pointless right now.
For posters saying he is bitter and frustrated, ofcourse he is. He is mmorpg developer who is thinking about new fun ideas for their mmorpg. Suddenly there come mmorpg that doesnt have single original idea and is just same old done little bit better and with completely risk free meaningless pvp. And that mmorpg sell for so many copies as wow did, which will just result more mmorpgs with same old instead mmorpgs that try expand and try something new.
