The Greatest Battle ever in an MMORPG

Heres a topic i dont think ive seen posted before(or for along time maybe?) tell us your stories(or other stories you've heard) of the best battles to ever occur in an mmorpg.

I think one for me were some of the battles in planetside(when it was new) were pretty damn intense, we were shooting the **** out of a door to keep the enemy from invading the bottom part of the base. i suicidaly decided to rush out there and try cause confusion and kill what i could and ended up getting killed alot of the time, almost instantly by tanks n stuff camping there. This stalemate between 2 sides of a door went on for ages!, it felt like alot was at stake if i couldnt keep them back.

No offense bud but, speaking as a Spec Assault grunt people like you used to really piss me off.  Running out that door meant those of us using heavy weapons ate a TON of grief.  That's what the SALLY door upstairs is for.  So that you can run out on the balconies where the tanks and such can't hit as easily so you actually have a chance of causing some havok.

That said I have to say that some of the greatest battles in PlanetSide actually occurred in Beta back before the XP system heavily favored city/base fights.  Back 'in the day' we would have HUGE open-field battles.  Hell we fought over every inch of land, not just the last 200m or so inside the COI of the nearest base.  Every centimeter of ground was fought over and battles raged for HOURS.  Huge fights, both sides with hundreds of people.  (This was before they pop-capped the continents too).

I loved those days and wish PS would get back to them.  They could easily raise the pop caps now considering today's PC's are a lot more powerful and can handle more people in the same area than the ones 3 years ago could.

I may go back to PlanetSide depending on what their new pricing scheme turns out to be.

The next place I remember really fun battles is DAOC.  To this day battle in the frontiers is just flat out awesome.

No game to date has yet to approach the epic size battles you see in Planetside.  Until another game like it comes out Planetside will reign supreme in this catagory.

ive been in many WW2 Online battles that have lasted HOURS, with infantry, tanks , planes and even ships!. I was mostly tanks and i teamed up with another bunch of tanks i found and did some patroling around areas thought to be empty and pick off any small forces trying to infiltrate the city. Brussels is where some of the best fighting occurs.

ive had only a few moments of large UO battles and that was when i was minax as a mage/tamer, rofl(i was newbie to PvP back then) , we were camped inside the minax building and both factions were outside picking off any of us who were in their view, few of them managed to kill me after i got paralysed, b**tards. lol.

I was also in chaos for awhile, but that ended after we suffered a really bad defeat, not only did they kill us, they dyed all our clothes pink!.

    wwiionline.

Huy was under merciless allied attack, so I spawned a halftrack with one account, alt-tabbed and spawned an 88 with my other account.  Towed myself up to the high hill east of Huy AB, deployed and blew up about 15 allied tanks camping the AB in less then 10 minutes and saved the town.  WHOPEE!

15 minutes later an allied infantry tried to sneak up beside me so I put it in neutral and rolled my 88 down the hill doing about 50.  Escaped a certain death :)

But I can no longer run 2 instances of wwiionline on this very same computer, and neither can the 88 roll freely downhill.  Bummer.

thats just cheating nerf :-/ i dont see why people need to have more than 1 account.

"Planetside was great before they added base-only experience"

Not sure what Planetside you played, but you don't get exp only from capping bases...it has never been like that.  You gain exp in various ways, from killing an enemy to supporting your side via playing a medic, engineer, and of course from capping bases.

WWOII is not even in the same league as Planetside for intensity - sorry guys.

EVE is space battles with ships.  No comparison, Planetside still beats it hands down for pulse pounding action.   Planetside may have it's flaws, but the one thing it does better than any other game out there is bring together 300+ players together to battle it out in extreme proximity to one another that no game to date has yet to duplicate.

Watch this promo video made by Marcopolo of the PS game community.  All this footage is shot in game using fraps and is what you'll see and experience in the game of Planetside

The greatest battle ever in a MMORPG was the one that raged on the SWG forums between the SOE Fanbois vs Disgruntled pissed off customers after the NGE. That was the most classic fighting over an mmorpg I have ever seen.

anyone got experiances from other mmorpgs apart from the FPS ones, a battle where your insanely outnumbered but manage to hold out for awhile maybe? or maybe a long battle over a certain area in DAOC or another fantasy game.

Some of the greatest battles i've ever been in were on Asheron's Call Darktide, there is nothing like 200 people running around fighting for control of the new town turbine just put in the dires. The AB wars were amazing, dungeon raids were amazing.

I never really played a lot mmorpgs, as I dont like spending money on a game every month, and I have a crap PC... the biggest I got must have been RYL arena battles... lol

How is PlanetSide? I've wanted to try it out,but the whole P2P part turned me down. Is it worth the 13bucks per month?

My greatest battle ever was in Planetside.

I think it was in the Old Oshur or on forseral, there was this plain that almost looked like a WW1 Trench battlefield, it had a "trench" along the road, and further up there were big and small craters and small hills and more further up was another "trench". It was the greatest battle ever with Infantry, Tanks a lot of support vehicles and bombers (No BFRS! ::::08:: ).

I just turned BR 10 on that day, grabbed my cycler as a TR and took cover in the trench for enemy bombs falling down from the sky.
As soon it was over you could see soldiers running out of the trench assaulting the enemy and tanks charging the enemy vehicles. it was an awesome sight.

I ran towards a small hill that was in the middle of the field between the two trenches and got myself patched up. i saw mates dieing on my left and right and the enemy trieng to counter-attack. as they tried to counter attack i crouched up the hill and pulled the trigger killing 2 enemy soldiers. i kept shooting and all the sudden i see bombs dropping out of nowhere, i looked up and i saw a small group of liberators (bombers) killing most of the advancing and the defending troops in the center part of the field and enemy trench including an AMS that was located in the center.
as soon there was a hole in the line i saw that most of the advancing enemy troops pulled back for cover and friendly troops moving to the center. enemy troops noticed about the hole in center and a small group of enemy grunts pulled up to do a last stance in the center part of the trench but it was useless as friendly tanks smashed their troops with ease and moving into the back of their lines killing snipers and AMS's in the right and left flank.
I moved along with the tanks and went to the right flank, jumped into the trench killing soldiers that were patching up, it felt great ::::09::

Too bad battles like these are becomming rare in planetside, especially on my server (Werner) where three-way battles are common which are very annoying.. a never ending battle on 1 cont.. :(

I hope to experience more battles like these in the future with the fodder project the devs are working on!

Shadowbane a few months after release.  I was in one of those server dominating guilds since beta.  I had a weird character that was a warrior who was purely defensive.  It took me forever to kill anyone, but took them longer to kill me, and I could outlast anyone with stamina.

The guild was breaking up, we controlled most of the map.  The other guilds formed a huge alliance, and they saw us breaking up and decided to seize on this chance.  We had two towns.  They decided to attack the smaller one.  Hardly any of the guild was on, only about 23-24 of us were at the town defending against a force of about 100 strong.  It wasn't an exaggeration, they provided the numbers.  The town had two walls protecting it, so it was decently defended.  The attacking force was mostly inexperienced with sieges.  Our 20 or so characters defended the town through most of the night.  The outer wall fell, a few managed to fly on top of the walls.  We cleared them out.  They finally got a hole in the inner wall late that night.  We fought them inside the walls.  I was holding off atleast three people throughout the battle.  We finally pushed them out when their numbers dropped due to it being so late.  We won that battle.  It was the last stand for the dying guild.  Was one of the greatest battles I have ever been apart of in a MMORPG.

Warrior Nation on Chaos Server? Just a guess, but it sounds similar to what was going on way back when on Chaos.

Nope it was on the fear server.  My understanding is that a lot of guilds started out big, controlled the server, then died out due to boredom or the leaders just didn't like the game anymore.  The server kind of went lame after the guild fell, and there wasn't anything to do but pvp, so I stopped playing.

Personally, my greatest battle experience was in FFXI. I was a noob at the time, and was teamed up with a bunch of other noobs (it was great). We were all off to finish mission 3-3, which is a mission to kill a huge dragon like creature with only 6 people and capped at lvl 25 if i remember right.

It was my first experience with such an epic battle in a mmorpg (epic enough for me at the time). Our whitemage suicided with Benidiction (prematurely I might add), our tank couldnt keep hate, and our redmage decided to go afk once we all got ready (without any warning).

It was a learning experience, it kept me on edge the whole battle. We won the battle but only 3 were left standing as the dust clearedimage. If anyone has played FFXI you all should remember this battle and how funny it was when we look back at being noobs.

Pop-lock is so annoying. No one ever uses Galaxy's or Sunder's anymore. They all get thier personal little craft that get blown away so fast.

Planetside also has my best battle. This was also during beta (I was on the New Conglometory cause they rule). The battle for the continent lasted 36 hours, and one base in particular really decided who one the continent. The fight there lasted 18 hours; and the New conglometory was defending it from both other factions. I don't think they realized how well we could sit back defend and milk people trying to get in. Shotguns in narrow corridors rule. Anyways Outside we had like 16 Vanguards constantly blowing up and re-making, they bombarded the other side of the coast. We didn't even bother with any aircraft since they just blew up on takeoff. We also had some other stuff. Our ANT had to have an escort at all times cause it was hard as heck to get it in and out. Plus we ran out of juice alot at that base. Anyways that battle lasted a while, until our assault force managed to unify themselves and finish off all the Vanu Soveriegnty bases. Then we just proceeded in on The Republic.

I rescently took advantage of that month free thing. Battles are kinda lame now since the New conglometory now has the most people, we used to have the least and have to send everyone in our faction to a continent. Now we just take advantage of poplock and get 5 to 1 numbers in there take the planet and move on.
