Why do people always ask what is the meaning of life?

Why do people always ask what is the meaning of life? It's written in every English dictionary ever. It's not hard to find.

: the ability to grow, change, etc., that separates plants and animals from things like water or rocks
: the period of time when a person is alive
: the experience of being alive

What people should ask, is what should I do with this life? Or they are really just unsure about what type of morals or paths they should follow.

Life is a complex thing. We as humans deal with an enormously complex intellectual, and emotional systems which allows us to ponder things on deeper levels than other species inhabiting this Earth.

What you do with your life is what you WANT to do. There is essentially nothing you NEED to do except survive, and help others survive. So when you are 'surviving' in the modern world of today, you're really just confronted with decisions of how you want to make your life better, rather than how to keep your life. Even at the bottom of the barrel, you can always live. Throwing yourself in jail for example is one way, you get food and bunk...unless of course your confronted with a death sentence whereas you probably don't belong in society any longer. So needless to say the 'survival' and 'necessity' boundaries are blurred severely as society becomes more and more complex.

So that brings us back to establishing that asking 'the meaning of life' is really just asking what you should with your life.

Do what you WANT to do as long as it doesn't injure, or negatively affect other good people.

If you have dreams, chase them! If you have a love, go for it!

Overworking yourself is ultimately no better than death, people say "Stop wasting your time on that and do something productive." -Well 'wasting' your time on that is what you wanted to do, so why would you be working in that moment to obtain money for things you want, when you're already doing what you want?

Now there's a good balance to maintain, as balance is ultimately the greatest tool.

You work for what you want. If what you want is to keep working then that's what you do. If you're working to make money to live a happy life travelling, playing videogames, going out with your friends, or even collecting that next stamp for your stamp collection, don't let other dry, overworked, unhappy people dissuade you from maintaining your favorite hobby, if that's what YOU like, then LIKE it!

Hobbies have DO ultimately have a limit. If you're life is in danger, or you're about to lose your home, all because you do nothing but play, and sit around, then you need to build a work ethic for yourself. But if you maintain a satisfying life and maintain your balance, you keep it up, your doing fantastic!

People generally often say "You like videogames? What a waste of time!" or "Why do people like to collect 'dolls'(a.k.a. collectables or rare memorabilia etc.)"

But what those people don't realize is that those gamers (myself) and those collectors are COMPLETELY happy and satisfied with their lives. I work for many hours, and I game for many hours. My life couldn't be better.

I'm not fond of Basketball, football, baseball or soccer, but I don't question sports fan's activities. I'm not fond of cars, but for people into it, I'm happy they are so involved with those things. But then gamers pick up a controller and kick back and our intentions are immediately questioned.

Basically I'm saying in this because I felt a bit inspirational today :P is: If you're a gamer or someone involved in hobbies that are often thought less of, know that you've done good, and there's NOTHING wrong with what you do.
Also, be open-minded. Retain as much knowledge, intuition, and understanding of other people and the world in general, and we can all make the world a better place. Understanding and tolerance is a rare commodity in the world.

P.S. yes, this is long don't complain lol, and tbh I don't know what made me write this but I just felt like it so hopefully you guys like it!

...having just read the WIki post, it doesn't really explain the humor that Mr Adams was getting at. So I'll try to recall the story as best as memory allows. Mind you, there's a lot of cobwebs in that part of my brain. So here goes:

Somewhere out there in space there lived a very advanced race of powerful beings that wanted to know what the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything was.

So they built an enormous and most advanced computer the Universe had ever witnessed. When they switched it on, they asked the computer to give them the answer. The computer dutifully calculated for a thousand years, and when it was finally finished the computer summoned the excited aliens.

"So, you've spent the past 1,000 years pondering the question of the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Now tell us what it is!", the aliens proudly pronounced.

The Universe's most massive and advanced computer responded with exactly what it designed to do, "The answer to the Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything is 42."

The funny part of the story is that a computer only crunches numbers, so it could only give them the answer that was also completely useless.

Yeah , lol, in the movie the number 42 was how many roads must a man walk down, or that's what they decided to accept as the answer lol.

I thought I had read, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Restaurant at the End of the Universe in the 80's, but after seeing the one, I doubt it. Perhaps I have a few more roads yet to travel.

See the world and all within it.
