[General Article] General: Perfect World's Arc Client

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

This past week we spoke to Mark Hill over at Perfect World about their new ARC game platform. As many companies are now harnessing the power of their large communities, Perfect World is hosting their series of games on a single platform for users. Mark gave us some details on the new ARC platform and how players will be able to access games much faster and explore Perfect World’s free to play market in a quick and easy way.

It seems like an awful lot of resources to get very little out of it.

they have been working on this for a while now but have been vague goals.

Vague goals?  The goal is put get all of their money grabbing games onto one platform, similar to what Trion and such are doing now.

All pwe is saying is that they want to reduce game updates and bring together the community.
But the arc client they have been working on for well over a year doesn't have any of those functionalities.
Most of their mmo's don't get that much attention.

    Just say No.

Adware and bloatware... I can see it possibly being useful for someone who plays multiple PWE games but, as someone who plays only one, it is unwelcome.

Yeah I uninstalled it all. Including the games.  I do not like intrusive crap on my PC from a GAME.

It would be cool if Arc updated the games instead of being a launcher to launch launchers. It would make more sense to run it then.

And they make deals with 3rd party software companies to use Arc as a conduit to install tracking software.

Sounds like they are trying to intertwine the community much like Battle.net

When you see a bunch of your friends in your friends list playing a new game. Chances are I would look or try a game I would not have looked at previously. This would increase the %age chance of at least one friend to try the new game / buy some gems.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

That is the whole point of the "game portal".

It makes it as easy as possible for players to login to all the different F2P games run by PWE. If they can make you aware of their other games AND make it super easy for you to try those games, that is best chance they have of making more Cash Shop sales.

Each new game you try will tempt you with different "special starter packs", mounts, bag space, bank space, etc.

Meanwhile, most people use Steam for stuff like Neverwinter even with them begging you to use the Arc one, and giving codes you can only redeem in the Arc one.

I used Arc recently to try out STO again. I was not impressed. That being said, I liked the Arc client a lot better than Steam's bloatware.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it

I don't understand the bloatware concern gamers keep mentioning. We have some of the most powerful rigs in the desktop space - we're talking a standard of 8GB ram, 4 - 8 cpu cores, a powerful video card, and often performance hard drives. Why would someone be concerned about an extra 50 - 100MB of memory and 50MB of client disk space? Many of us run taxing voip software, a browser open with multiple tabs (at work right now 20 tabs taking up 840MB of memory), along with a host of other processes (50 - 100) running in the background.

The only time I ever notice something affecting performance is when I'm running something that does a lot of disc caching or is hording bandwidth. Steam also slows down my startup time a little since it does a patch check.

It's a personal preference thing from my standpoint. I don't like the product or the company. I have had several bad run ins with them over the years before I finally swore them off for good around 2 years or so ago. I was tired of updates, start up issues, memory usage, bugs and the quality of customer service they offered me.

If it works for people, that's great, but the product doesn't work for me and I'd much rather buy physical copies or directly from the developer at all times that are possible. I do miss out on some Steam exclusives, admittedly, but I haven't seen a single game yet that would make me deal with Steam again personally.

What we need is a third party client to control all the other third party clients so that we can control everything in one simple client.  Not much different than what Comcast does to your TV... forget that you have a remote for the DVR, the TV, the sound system, the game console, whatever, this one remote, which completely ignores all the features of the devices you purchased will make your life so much simpler.  Then charge them a monthly fee to use it.

As long as they don't force us to use Arc, I will continue to play Neverwinter once in a while. The moment they force it  is the moment I stop playing anything they make. I say the same for Trion and its Glyph.

I will not use a hub to play a single companies game, I don't even play Ubisoft games anymore because I refuse to have Uplay on my system. I benefit nothing, they are lying when they say it improves a players experience as much as they are lying when they say it makes updating games easier, its 100% grade A bulldung. Games do not update faster with their unified clients as they did with the single clients, a unified client cannot download FASTER and thus its bull.

And on top of all that, I refuse to give up the largest gaming community in the world, Steam, to play one companies games. No thank you.

What a crock. Arc uses up far more resources and has been proven to actually effect gameplay, something Steam does not do.

Aye agreed, I do not like to have a bunch of useless "clients" on my pc. I get enough spam surfing the web.

Pwe games have lock boxes, grindy and very confusing currencies. Want to play another one of our games?

Steam is not the largest gaming community in the world.

    Steam PC

    Arc PC

    PS Console

    Thanks for your input.

They said this same thing to the over 1000 angry posts on the STO forums from people that had no issues running the game until ARC was installed...even after most of them posted their rigs that all turned out to be less than a few years old.

But again, thanks for the typical dismissal, speaks volumes.
