ArenaNet is taking Guild Wars 2 on the road to this year's GamesCom ni Germany. During the convention, ANet will be sponsoring a global "All Stars" PvP tournament, with players participating from around the world, including teams from China where GW2 recently launched.
ArenaNet is partnering with Twitch, the world’s leading video platform and community for gamers, to put on this year’s International All-Stars Tournament at gamescom, taking place August 14-17 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. There will be daily matches featured on the show floor at the Twitch booth and live streamed through both the Twitch main channel at twitch.tv and the Guild Wars 2 Twitch channel at twitch.tv/guildwars2.
“When it comes to competitive gaming, Twitch has established itself as the premiere destination for the industry’s most premium content,” said Jason Fletcher, Events BD Manager, EMEA, Twitch. “With ArenaNet using our platform and gamescom booth to broadcast their Guild Wars 2 event, it’s another example of how strong the esports content and community is on Twitch.”

Good question. I can't see it being from the players with how small the playerbase is in SPvP. Anet has said from release and before release they wanted their PvP to be an eSport. The funny part is, the serious PvP players gravitate towards WvW and focus on setting up GvG fights there rather than in the....sub par arena system (putting it nicely).

"Serious PvP player" what a load balloney. Que the "You know nothing, John Snow."
I can tell you for a fact, all those GvG guilds couldn't hold a candle to any one SPvP team even with their best players.
Anet should be focusing on Esports because the SPvP scene has been neglected for ages. There's no competition and there's no reward. WvW got a major tournament even before SPvP, several features that were supposed to be in at release still aren't in to this day and probably never will be. Balance changes are slow to land and the general consensus amongst the community is that Anet only cares about PvE.
The least they can do for the community right now is give them a reason to want to compete.
This is not a game.
I respect your opinion but disagree with the train of thought.

Problem is, in order for them to properly focus on e-sports PvP, they would need one of two things:
1) Someone willing to take on the responsibility for tournaments / promotions / casting / etc. themselves, with little-no cost to A-net (which is pretty much not going to happen).
2) devote most of their resources to doing so, which means that most of the rest of the game would have to get neglected. Which is absolutely deadly to an MMO.
I was all for them trying to do competitive pvp when the game first launched. However now, especially with how they let the interest for such a thing completely vanish, by neglecting sPvP for so long, I just don't see them being able to do the work needed to not only provide a quality e-sports experience, but to also rebuild all the hype they've lost. It'd be a massive uphill battle for them, and I'm not sure that's what they should be focusing on w/ their game atm. We'll see though.
Currently I think other games are doing the esports thing much much better. And the combat from GW2 is already starting to feel a bit behind (unless you use combat mod).

I've gotta agree with this.
Expand your game (not this maguuma zone / island thing every once in a blue moon). A real expansion.
Tweak WvW while this is still one of the only games that really offer it (and arguably one of the better ones). With their only real competition for WvW / RvR atm being ESO, they have a real chance here to bring this part of the game back.
I also know quite a few people who are waiting for these things to happen, because they do miss the game, but see no reason to return (yet).
Now that I can answer. The eSports thing has been laughed about in the official forums every time it is mentioned. It's generally considered the biggest waste of resources GW2 has committed by a majority of the games players. My source for that is 1.5 years of play coupled with daily forum visits. No one that I have seen has asked for eSports, but Anet has pushed it since the beginning whether the players wanted it or not.

The SPvPers i'm sure would love it.
The problem is, if you want to do esports, you need to go big, or go home. There's no half-assing it, and you can't just have a tourney at your local YMCA and call it a day. If you honestly want your game to be part of the esports scene you need to spend a lot of time, money, and effort making it comparable to the other games out there (mostly mobas, world of tanks, starcraft, and fighters).
Best example I can give of a newer company trying to break into esports would be hirez w/ smite. They aren't quite there yet (at least not on the lvl of league, dota, or sc2), but they are pushing out multiple tourneys, actively advertising multiple broadcasts (both their own and other interests'), and they are also raising a lot of funding for prize pools; which are hugely important for bringing in competition, for good reason.
I'm just not seeing that lvl of commitment from Anet. They seem to be doing more of the 'hey guys, remember us? We're still relevant right?' approach. And it's just nowhere near what you need to really push the whole esports thing.
So what makes everyone in this topic think that Anet are pushing e-sports, just because they will be hosting and sponsoring an sPvP event while they are at GamesCon??
Conventions like GamesCon are a perfect for tournaments like that. SPVP is a part of their game, so seriously, why the f*ck not host an event if they are there?!
Should they pick 50 random people from the crowd and make them play WvW? Or even make them go up against a new world boss? We all know how fun and exciting to watch that turned out to be last time they did it...
^Because SPvP is a tiny fraction of the playerbase, and they tried to push players into it by adding PvE rewards to SPvP (reward tracks). They keep pushing players to try it out with Spectator mode, Tournaments, and Livestreams. Not only that, but some devs have always mentioned in the past, that they are "serious about e-sports". If those reasons aren't good enough to convince you that they aren't pushing e-sports on the playerbase, then i don't know what will. They should just give up on e-sports. It will never have a large enough following to be considered serious, ever. It will never be as popular as League of Legends or MOBAs. They are better off spending time, and resources, developing for regular SPvP content, without the "e-sports" baggage holding it back. Once again, Living Story ruins another aspect of the game. Most of that money and time went to voice acting for Scarlet and Destiny's Edge 2.0. Such a waste. lol.
