[Column] Rift: Ten Hopes and Fears for Nightmare Tide

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It has been two weeks since Trion announced RIFT: Nightmare Tide. Since our announcement interview, the development team has taken to the forums and social media to tantalize us with new tidbits of information. A series of behind the scenes articles has gone up, as well as a slew of new screenshots and concept art. With all of these things in mind, it’s time we outline just what we’re hoping for – and what we’re afraid of – in the next expansion.

Wait, they're going to be selling an equipment slot?  Idk anything about this so does that slot allow an item that provides stats cause that really is P2W if that's the case.

I have tried a few times to plat Rift - I get to about level 25 ish and the experience dwindles.

I do like what I see though, it is one of those games I would like to play.

The quest hub grocery list of quests to do that you are talking about is one of the key factors that tire me out.  The game is fairly great otherwise, but the meaningless quests are well..meaningless.

I enjoy the fewer quests, but larger story driven and story arc related quests.

Yea they are selling at equip slot that can also be unlocked without cash. Its not P2W unless they make it "impossible" to get without cash.

Gotta love pc gaming, business is business, like it or leave it. And then there was Rift. Another one gives way to greed, who is surprised?

Maybe they need money? Maybe they would like to stay in business so that their employees can keep their jobs?

I wonder how many people spouting the "greed" battle cry would work for a business that spent money to put out a product and if their customers "felt like paying" they would pay. Or not.

"Hey honey, I realize we have kids and there will be college costs, not to mention our mortgage and impending retirement, but our company has changed to an all new payment model! We give our product away and rely upon our customers to pay us what they think we are worth. Many won't pay but we hope that the few who do pay will pay a LOT each month! Cross your fingers!"

Don't think they need the money, more like they need to have money in the bank, to keep the game running keep up with new coming up patch. But with the equipment slot having unlock by just buying it or unlock your self with some work, as many people complain about everything if they don't get it in the next 20 mins. why playing.

Just remember you can't run a mmo with hugs and candy, with many people want to play free, they needed a option with out making you feel like you have to pay but more you feel like your supporting them, as I see people this day's, they just don't like to support a mmo in general, they want it to be all free, and complain have no when there no patch coming in when something is free. People just have to deal with it people just going have to unlock sooner then they are no big deal.

Oh yeah one more thing befor people point out that the gear in pvp is being p2w, I have close to full relic gear, not 1 penny for it, and having alot fun getting to there, then taking some type of short cut.

Maybe they need money? So turn a game into p2w and screw over your loyal customers, great idea, that's what makes pc gaming, pc gaming.

Their model is the fairest in the f2p market tbh. To honestly buy gear in that game, it costs a crap load of credits, so if people have 50$+ to spend on a single piece of gear, I say let them while I laugh and save my money. Rift isn't going anywhere for a while and they honestly dont need the money since Archage is soon anyway.

I'm not too worried about too much swimming as long as they give me a lot of new mounts to glide underwater. If you think about it it could be very similar too flying mounts without cancelling out open world pvp

    BIG FEAR:--

They will bork up crafting again, like they did in SL, make you have to use way to many different components, compared to original Rift and need multiple items from different gathering tiers.

Crafting has become just a time sink, apart fro ma few items, and it needs to be sorted properly and not be stupid like they have mede it in Storm Legion.

They lost me fast after 1st expansion pack. Never got any response how is possible normal mobs in new areas had 7 or more times HP then ELITE of SAME level in old world. And of course every mob was epic fight. And before I killed i.e. 3 so I could pass ... 1st already respawned. I never raided so I had basic armor and weapons, from questing. Was disgusting, terrible. And have not even checked nightmare from original game when some times I could not play for a week returning evening from job, because whole area was infested with zillion rifts, mobs, ... AT QUEST HUBS(!!!) resulting in istant death after running back to corpse. Same happened to quest giving NPC's. Main attraction of Rift, rifts :-), CAN NOT WORK if not constantly FULL OF PLAYERS AROUND AND WILLING TO CLOSE THEM. And probably i will never ever return. I have Wow and Swtor, that keeps me completely busy, now Wildstart, .... Once you lose customer is hard to get him/her back. Simple as that. Still my memories of original release are all superb. Hardly can remember any game released so clean of bugs. Shame.

from what i hear the only players who will really need the new equipment slot are the endgame raiders.  and if you're an endgame raider in rift, you spend enough time playing the game that you should NOT feel bad about shelling out the 10 bucks or whatever to unlock the damn item slot.  if i do something for 25 hours a week for fun, then i am not going to gripe about spending a small amount of cash on it; in fact i would be happy that 25 hours of entertainment a week is only costing me 10 bucks or however much the slot's gonna cost.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

It doesn't get much free-er than this.  Rex allows you to buy anything that would require $ and is not too hard to get.  They provide a ton of stuff to do and overall is a pretty good game.  If I was currently looking to play a free MMORPG this would be it.  Unfortunately I would rather pay for Wildstar, because even though Rift is fun I haven't had as much fun in an MMORPG as I am having in WS since vanilla WoW(not that it is great by today's standards but it was a blast at the time).

You can earn everything in Rift through in game currency. Very easily I might add. There is no game that is more free than Rift, every other F2P MMO is far worse.

when Tides was announced, on June 25, the producer stated a generic "this year"

This year we will release RIFT: Nightmare Tide, our next major expansion.

despite being an unknown time frame within 6 months,

it's sooner than Blizzard's time frame for WOD

WOD started preorders on March 10th -- with a release date of "before 12/20/14"  image
