Headphone suggestions

jdkskipjdkskip Member UncommonPosts: 120

Hi all, looking for suggestions on a good gaming headset. I have a pair of Turtle Beach x12's which were great for about two years, but now the left side does not work and I'm getting a crackling from the right side. It seems if I do not use a headset for a few months or so they tend to go south.

I would prefer not to go over $100, but that's not firm, mic is needed , I have no sound card on computer and surround sound is not really needed since I'm only playing GW2, and WoT at the moment, but could be nice. I guess I'm looking mostly looking for a quality set that will last longer than it's warranty.

Any comments or suggestions appreciated, thanks.

I asked this question myself around a year or so ago and based on the feedback I went with Sennheiser.

They vary in price range, but the build quality and comfort is great! Mine plugs into a standard 3.5mm jack (one for mic, one for sound).

    Hope this helps!

Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

I'm currently using the Corsair Vengeance 2100 headset and it's been fantastic.    I believe I paid $99 for it a few months back.

I had enough with the cheap gaming headsets after spending hundreds of dollars over the years. I ended up saving for a while and using a shitty headset until I could purchase these Sennheiser HS 598s. I have had them for a year now and they are just as sturdy and great sounding as the day I got them. If you want more out of them you can pick up a small soundcard or amp for them for pretty cheap, but along they are just fine for me.

The other plus to this method is that I don't have to worry about a microphone going bad and ruining my pair of headphones. I started out using a Zalman clip on mic that was really cheap, and eventually upgraded to a Blue Snowball- which has been nothing short of phenomenal.

In the end I spent a little more than I had wanted to, but am VERY satisfied with the purchases.

Amazon actually has a sale running on the headphones/set I use:

I've been very pleased with the audio quality vs price on these headphones. They are very comfortable and don't hurt my ears at all even after several hours of use. The mic attachment works great as well. I'd recommend them to anyone really whether you need the detachable mic or not due to how affordable they are and how well made they are.

Also, I have used them for over a year now with zero problems if you were concerned about longevity. You really can't beat the price point you are getting for light gaming/ MMO play.

    I recommend the logitech g430.

    They are 7.1 surrond sound

They are USB as well as 3.5mm, which helps to be able to use it for other things.

I have the more expensive ones the g930 but im not as happy with those. They are wireless, which i get some connections problems with them and I cant plug them into other devices since they are only USB.

I'm not trying to promote another site. But that's an enthusiast site and it will give you options of quality sets and price ranges. I've been using it to figure out what types I am interested in and then trying to find a store nearby with display units to try out.

When it comes to headsets, price does matter.  The cheaper sets sit on your ears, while the more expensive are over the ear.  If you wear the headsets that sit on your ears for a prolonged period of time (like 2+ hours), your ears will hurt.  I got a big head and I just got a new headset from Sennheiser, the G4ME ZERO.  My friends say they can hear my voice like I'm standing right next to them, instead of the normal "talking on the phone" sound.  They're extremely comfortable too.  Last weekend I wore them for ~4 hours straight, and didn't get any ear pains.  They're on the high end of the price department, but I plan on keeping them for years and years, so really it's not too bad.

Edit: The noise canceling is good and bad.  It's good because you can't hear anything at all, and it's bad because I've missed phone calls because of it lol.  I have to put my phone in my pocket so the vibrate alerts me when I get a call XD

look into recording headphones. find some that are flat response and the sound will be crystal clear.

  • Turtle beach are the worst headsets in the world..  They always break in the same area's...  The left ear thin plastic between the top Head peice that sits on your head the the ear speaker..  When you adjust the the headset to make it larger a Thin peice of plastic on both sides of the headset will show..  This is covering up the wires that's going to the right ear...  The peice alwasy breaks  and expose's the cables under it.. If it breaks then the only thing keeping the ear speaker up is the cable that sends power/signal to the other speaker....  It ends up being that the  right ear speaker stops working....  4 Headsets had to be retuned/rfm and the one that the manufacture sends me ends up having the same issue in a year or less....

The other issue is the cable line from the left speaker to the volume/mute/etc controls...  This area is the other problem area...  If you start hearing static every time you move around then the cable is the cause.....

I recommend the Steel Series Siberia Elite V2.  Got mine on sale for just over $100 after taxes.  It is 7.1 surround with Dolby and the built in software is pretty kick ass.  It's super light, retractable mic, and portable usb sound card.

It also sounds great using anolog modules.

My friend uses the Krakken, he seems to like that one as well, and it goes regular for about $79.

I second this post, that site is great for this exact question. They usually have in depth reviews for any price range you can think of, and if you want more opinions just ask and the people there will help. Its where I went before I picked up my Sennheiser HDs.

Thank you all for the suggestions. While I can't really afford the high end Sennheisers, I'm going to go with the PC 330's for now. I like the 2 year warranty and the flip-up cup design for girlfriend aggro, lol. Thanks again.
