Hi there, I would like to know what do you think of the X series of games from Egosoft? I have always enjoyed space trading games and was wondering if other people have played them and liked them? What do you think?
I first encountered them with X2: The Threat, which I really enjoyed right up until I couldn't work out why I couldn't complete the 1st storyline taxi mission (it didn't occur to me for, literally, years that I needed to be on the ship delivering the passenger, not operating it remotely).
Later I discover X3: Reunion & that scratched an itch, I don't know many hours of that I played but imagine it's in the 4-digit range, Terran Conflict would be even more though I didn't get around to getting it on Steam until after I'd lost my physical copy (steam says 1125hrs on TC + 311hrs for AP, no idea how many months I had in TC before steam though).
I've even managed a 113hrs of X: Rebirth (back around 1.19-1.21 I think), though I really wish Bernd had decided they should make it as X4 rather than shouldn't.
All things considered I'm probably likely to return to TC & AP for the rest of their non-DiD achievements (X3TC & X3AP I play "vanilla-safe", whereas X3R I tended to add lots of Mods to) before I go back to Rebirth.
Skip the last one it bombed, X3: Reunion or Albion are worth a budget buy. Needs to good PC to get the most out of it.
Think Space Trader/missions/etc but where you can expand your empire to build trade routes, space stations, and manage fleets. Still fairly complex controls to get into, so you need patience to get up to speed. If you pick up and don't learn the controls then you can quickly hit the 'what do i do next' spot.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Well, actually, the problem is that it didn't bomb, probably because so many fans of the earlier games were expecting something we'd recognise, even though Egosoft had being saying for years that it wouldn't be "X4".
That being said, once Egosoft finish fixing it (if they haven't already, I haven't actually played since January), it will probably be a perfectly good example of whatever it is, it's just that that is never going to be X4 (nor do I expect it will be moddable to be an X4-alike).
Hopefully at some point they'll devote their experience with creating Rebirth to building us an multi-threaded X-game (aka X4) after all.

It didn't get 33 metacritic score and loud calls for refunds for nothing. That already hurt company reputation and it the sales they racked up are going to be spend on futile attempt to fix the game instead of investing it into any future project.
The game is a complete mess and not just because of bugs but design concepts. It is more of a GTA in space rather than space sim, space shooter, w/e in space.
I'd recommend X3-the later two installments specifically ( Terran conflict + albion prelude) Reunion isn't bad per say, yet it's not as deep as the latter two installments.
These games are far to deep to really explain in a single post. SO I won't try, I do feel they're probably the best space sims you'll find in this day and age, at least until Elite makes retail.
