Exactly like the Britney Spears example - World of Warcraft was bought mostly by the folowers of Blizzard, and most of the subscribers that still play never played another MMORPG, so they dont know differently (exceptions exist). Just like the B Spears fans, they have no ideea there is much better out there.

You know what you're right I am going to resubscribe to WoW and buy all the popular CDs because I am just jaded and jealous of thier popularity and I should follow the sheep blindingly.
Claus has an excellent point. You really get nothing in WoW for killing A player. And after 4 or 5 times, you don't even get honor points any more. The only way to get anything from PvP in WoW is endless Battleground grinding. That's not real PvP. It's PvE with a twist.
To touch on some of what other people have been commenting on, WoW has a real conflict for developers and gamers. It's so noob friendly. I feel like it holds the game back sometimes. That's the problem. You risk alienating potential players who would be new to the genre if the game is too complicated for a new player to understand. But you risk losing experienced players if there isn't enough depth to the mechanics.
I'm thankful I didn't advance my trade skills much before I hit 60. Or I would really be bored right now.

Yeap what's the point of PvP in WoW. Is it really worth 15 bucks a month to do pointless PvP with no risk. I can do that for free with more fun-factor in any FPS. Oh yeah but 5+ million plus people can't be wrong so I should just be happy with whatever Blizzard does.
WOW is fun for about 15 mins until you run into 7 other people who look identical to yourself in every way then you realize hummmm that kinda ruins the whole feeling distinct feel, then after 2 weeks of play you sit back and realize wow I uderstand the name WOW now becasue wow this is kinda the samething every min with the same characture that look and act and move just like you and this is kinda shitty, then after that you watch porn

It has never promised anything "new", it has never advertised itself as the "mmo revolution" and it has never advertised itself with "the ultimate pvp experience". But still people seem to buy the game, quit after 2 days and post on the forums "Wow sucks", "Wow didn't do anything new", "It's not the mmo revolution". You knew that before you tried the game. Blizzard is one of the most famous game studios in the world, everyone has heard about them, and if you have heard about the you know that they never do anything really new. They take the good/bad old stuff, add some small nifty details and polish it. They are never set out to do something new.
Why don't you turn towards the games that promise "the revolution"?

I am SO sick of these anti-WoW topics. every day we get one "I didn't like wow, so it MUST suck" "my oppinnion is law, i hate wow so it sucks because I say so!" World of Warcraft does a lot of things right, PvE is done well, The pvp is NOT made for "hardcore" pvp players, its made for people who want to have a pvp experience once in a while. the instances are set up well, there are tons of quests (tough a lot of them are the same),has a deep lore and there is plenty of raid conent.
World of Warcraft is MADE for people who want to have a Casual (<-IMPORTANT!) mmorpg experience. it isn't for the uber pro mmorpg players.

Not everyone has good taste in games.. some ppl like Runescape still.. yet others like Meridian 59 still.. Each too thier own I reacon. WoW was great to start with, specially when you've been in EQ 1 for a long time and then EQ2.. EQ2 was a national flop! AC2 however, never got its foot off the ground due to lazy GM's that didnt know how to fix the game in the first place..
We have games to pick from all over the place, so far Eve-Online is the most outstanding!!
