How long should MMOs last? It’s a question that splits communities and confuses publishers. Some enthusiasts believe an MMO should persist in perpetuum, continuously getting updates, never ending. Others think they should be able to complete the content of a new MMO within a few months, maybe even weeks, of it launching. The recent implementation of Patch 1.2 on Trion World’s ArcheAge alpha servers brought this topic to the forefront of discussion among fans of the game.

I like the idea of Archeage but I fear the reality of it will be a gankfest . Especially without factions .As for how long they should last well as long as people are interested in them or as long as someone wants to run them as is the case in Meridian 59 (which I believe is still going totally free but has no updates for it anymore ) .
There are factions. East continent vs west. Killing some one from your own faction is possible, but considered a crime. Only people looking to go Pirate will be ganking their own faction most of the time.
I personally love the opportunity to kill some butt-face that ninjaed my resource node while I was clearing trash from around it. In fact, there is more than a good chance the risk of retaliation by other players will actually encourage better behavior as a whole. Nothing says "Stop being a dick" like "my guild is now going to kill you every time one of our members sees you".
One word review of this article: Rambling
Sorry Mark, just not seeing a point to this.
What he is trying to say is that changes of this magnitude force players away. XL lost a lot of players in Korea because of this. Trion is trying to change the game is such a way that will not cause such an exodus....hopefully, and keep players for a long time.
MMOs should have no "end game" - basically developed for content locusts
should be a perpetually expanding world
publishers are easily confused.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Your ok. Bushi is no more. come play. ad for everyone else. The games actuallypretty awesome. just watch some one stream while they play. you will then get your outlook on it.
Not to sound rude, but try making a game, when you have to deal with so many people, who all want different things that will happen. MMO's are getting harder to make because now a days, no one wants the same thing. I mean look at this game, a lot of the PVEers are coming here and trying to change the game because they are scared of PVP.. or ganking.
I made a guild 15 years ago, and defend people who don't like being ganked. We also gank the gankers... So not all PVP fans are gankers. We do not gank people are are alone unless they attack first or run there mouth.
So I wish people would understand making MMO's in my eyes are going to come to an end in the next 5 years, I been saying this. I hope this does not happen as I'm in the industry, but I see what is going on and a lot of the information given to us by players. its disgusting.. gamers need to give developers more respect, they don't. They just complain, when is the last time on this forum have you seen someone say, great job devs...Never they would rather rip there head off..
If you made a game, you will never make everyone happy ever... Period... I have realized this after making many games. I was a gamer that turned dev and thought it was there fault..
Its not always there fault, its the trolling, and the people throwing fits and it confuses devs, when you have 10 people saying one thing, and another 10, saying something else and so on. I have seen this and it makes there job harder.
Heck when I ran my guild, we lasted 7 years in AC1 and in WOW 5 years, now we are lucky to last 30 days!!!
Sad... so sad..
The point I'm trying to make , if you want a game to do well, make comments and helpful ones with out yelling and throwing a fit, also report all bugs and do it properly!!!.. This can help the devs.. I been in so many beta and been a dev of some MMO and listen to chat, its horrible.. People need to grow up.. So we all can have fun games and last for many years instead of throwing fits.
Making MMO's are not easy at all, heck even small scale games are hard to make...
I just hope Trion sticks to their guns and gives people an option of ONE mmo on the market not geared toward ADD type players. There are dozens of choices out there for people that want to max out everything in a month then move to another game.
AA requires you to put time and effort into achieving goals. If this just sounds horrible to you, then its not the game for you. And that's okay, just go play another one. Problem solved.
This article was basically the result of me starting to write about one topic, realizing I wrote about a different topic and not starting over. For next time I'll choose a more specific topic. I'm also open to suggestions.

Here's a link to the patch 1.2 changelog. Sorry for not including them, covering all the changes would make the article incredibly long. I wrote about them in my last article.

Facts can be found in the patch notes linked above and also in other threads on the archeagegame.com forums. I try not to get too specific with up/down positive/negative opinions on each change in articles, letting readers form their own opinions. If you'd like, I can link you to some opinion pieces on ArcheAge fan communities (AAS, reddit, 4chan, official forums, etc.).

I like this idea, it's something that EVE pulls off well and ArcheAge might in the future. Star Citizen also seems to be heading in this direction by promising to add new planetary systems to discover over time. No Man's Sky is also on this track, though that game isn't really an MMO.
