[Column] General: MOBA Fatigue

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

The onslaught of MOBAs from every developer out there has resulted in more than a few moans and groans from gamers and press alike. MOBA fatigue seems to have set in. We’re at a point now that articles questioning the need for a new MOBA regularly come immediately alongside their announcements.

I am going to pick one moba to play and ignore the rest. That one will be Heroes of the Storm. Shouldn't be too hard to ignore the rest, the only competition is League which I can't stand and dota 2. Dota is respectable, but Heroes will be better. Basically when I hear moba, all I hear is HotS.

It's funny because that's exactly why marketers are running from the term "MMO" these days.  Most consumers here MMO and think immediately "WoW".  They don't grasp that an MMO can be different than orcs and elves and fantasy.

If none of the new MOBA-types take hold, the exact same thing will happen to the MOBA.

Well, you guys know I'm responsible for a lot of those moans and groans on MOBA announcements :). The market already had plenty of competition between DoTA2/LoL/HoN/Smite etc. etc. And now in the past few months about 5 more have been announced that I can remember off the top of my head, none of which can claim to be something ground breaking.

I'm not going to criticize a game heavily before I get a chance to play it, but I can sure groan when I see another LoL clone being announced for the umpteenth time this year :p.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it

Just like after WoW´s success, everyone jumping on the MMO bandwagon and desperately trying to clone WoW´s success.

The same applies here. After LoL massive success, everyone is jumping on the MOBA bandwagon desperately trying to clone LoL´s success.

    No suprise really. /shrug

Wow is cloned and yes sets the bar for mmorpgs. League has done the same with mobas. Though Wows greatness hurts the genre, I don't think running from the term MMO is a problem as long as they want to call it persistent online world or create some new term that's fine. We as consumers can still judge it like an mmorpg, they can call it whatever they want, when the game launches and people play it, the truth will be had. Consumers are the dumbest people and the smartest. With respect to wow, people think wow for a reason, that reason is because it's the better game pound for pound against the competition. All developers need to do is come out with a better game, call it an mmorpg, and presto the genre has been redefined.

Isn't this the market Turbine is currently in the process of gutting themselves upon?  Strange how flavor of the month design by focus group game creation with no personal interest or passion in the content, material, or play style fails so spectacularly, whoda thunk it?

A watered down version of an RTS focused on PvP. Think of it as Warcraft 3 with only one or two maps to play.

    Hah. MOBAs.

Even the term - Multiplayer Online Battle Arena makes me laugh so hard snot comes out my nose.

Will the MOBA evolve back into the RTS genre from which it sprouted?

Oh god, the article starts with crediting LoL for moba's..

    Really?  Haha..

There's a reason LoL called itself a "Dota like" game at first..

Almost 11 million bucks for Dota 2's big tournament now for that matter...?

So LoL is not the first moba taking the step to the big leagues? Or at least the big audience?

Why would you not refer to the most popular game in the western world, if not the whole world?

As said in the post, they do not credit it for being the first MOBA, they give them the credit for turning a niche genre into a world wide dominating genre.

exactly this.  the guys that founded riot were on the dota mod team, the other guys that were working on dota went to valve, and the guy left over maintaining dota did dota all stars.  the dota all stars guy joined riot and started working on an all stars like game from riot.

blizzard bought the team and rights to the all stars game from riot.

i believe thats how the saga goes so far, i may have left a couple details out, but for the most part, I believe thats how the moba saga goes thus far.

    Games i'm playing right now...

Let me quote something for you:

"The same thing is essentially happening now with League of Legends and MOBAs. Sure, LoL wasn’t the first “MOBA”, but the game’s undeniable success truly propelled the genre into the mainstream and surprise, surprise, everyone is now making MOBAs."

I have a love/hate relationship with MOBAs.  At the heart the concept is great.  Its extremely fun, etc.

But, because it is A. A team based game, and B. Has a format that heavily favors snowballing, it can be literally the most infuriating game ON THE PLANET.

You can have 1 person on your team that makes 1 or 2 early minor mistakes and that can very easily lose the entire game for you.  Also, because of completely ridiculous policies by Valve in dota 2, you can't concede a game, because it "ruins the fun for the winning team".  Of course, because in general people on the internet, and primarily hardcore PVP'ers, are, excuse my language, worthless douchebag griefers, rather than win the game, they decide to try to make it as horrible and demeaning a process as possible.  They know you can't quit the game, so they drag it out, focus on trying to kill you in spawn rather than push the towers and kill the ancient, etc.

Also, i really believe you have to seperate out the asian market when you talk about games, particularly on a website thats primary readership/userbase is not residing in those countries.  Just because a game has 8 million people in asia doesnt mean crap to us if only say 200k play it in europe/NA/Oceanic, etc.

I play a decent amount of DOTA 2 off and on, now moreso than ever due to a complete lack of anything even REMOTELY worth playing in the "MMO" genre (I use the term MMO with great disdain), but its just not something i can see myself playing regularly until either they make changes to reduce the snowballing, or release another MMO where there is more of a focus on player skill than in current MMOs.

Now, i dont mean to suggest that current MMOs dont reward player skill, but you could take 2 of the best MOBA players in the world and team them with 3 mediocre players and they could NOT make up for those mediocre players mistakes, just not possible.

Likewise, you can have 4 excellent players, and 1 stupid player can easily tank the entire game for those 4 by feeding, not being able to participate in any meaningful way in team fights, etc.

For me, MOBAs have a long ways to go before they can be the next counterstrike or call of duty or whatever (again, in the NA/Euro/Oceanic market)

If you're getting spawn camped , you should probably stick to pve, I'm sorry but that's just funny.

You know I love me some MOBA's my only problem is they are trying fix what isn't broken. League of Legends and Dota 2 are great games but a lot of these games are making such huge drastic changes that it doesn't have that same competitive feel or its been dumbed down too much. Lol is the perfect balance of easy to understand and competitive.

I have tried SO HARD to get into these types of games. I mean, with millions of players, DotA2 and LoL can't be that bad, can they? But for whatever reason, I just can't get into MOBAs/DotA clones/whatever people call them. They bore me to tears and I can't stay interested. I've tried LoL, DotA2, Guardians of Middle-earth, Smite, Infinite Crisis, etc. None of them have been any fun for me.

I think the only MOBA (or moba-esque?) game I enjoy is Awesomenauts, which I have about 20 hours played.

  • UtinniUtinni Member EpicPosts: 2,209

The only people fatigued with MOBA are people who don't play them. People who do know that there are only two worth investing a second in. Sales and account numbers continue to grow as they are an extremely well thought out game type with a lot of replay potential.

And no, HOTS isn't a MOBA and no one cares about it.

You might want to include Smite which reportedly has between 4-5 million players already.  Personally I'm not enjoying HotS but each their own.

I just can't play top down mobas like LoL anymore despite my love of the game.  I'm onto Smite, Minimum, Battleborn, and possibly Gigantic.  At this point I really can't see myself going back.  Point being I love the evolution of what's quickly become my favorite genre.

Dude i have a 3k MMR, not spectacular, but im clearly not a n00b.  I also only started playing the game 6 months ago so i dont have years of experience under my belt either.

When you get a couple of retards on your team that feed 5-10 kills in the first 5-10 minuted of the game, you get spawn camped, it just happens.  So stop acting like a tryhard and post something useful to the discussion.

I'm sorry your friends are retarded, that's very nice of you to continue to play with them even if you are getting spawn camped. I understand now and am sorry for taking a jab at your spawn camp problem. You should have just said your friends are retarded though, it would have been less misleading. Good luck out there sorry bro.
