How's the PvP?

I've been itching to try this game lately. I've heard allot of good things about it, and i've always been a huge fan of the FF series. However, PvP is an important aspect for me and the lack of it was the reason i didn't start playing at release. I know they've added it, but seems it revolves around some weird basketball game.
Anyway.. is the PvP any good?

The PvP is in an event called ballista. They have different level caps with the highest being uncapped (level cap in FFXI is 75) You have to go to a certain area at a certain time to particpate. If enough people show up (depending on the time of the day you play) you sign up to compete and get assigned a team. If enough people don't show up you have to wait one RL earth hour for the next ballista.
I'll sum up the actual competition like this: You pretty much just pick up these little stones and try to throw them in a goal to score points. The goals randomly spawn in the area like the stones do. While all this is going on you try to kill the other team and keep your team members alive. If your team doesn't work well together or the wrong jobs show up you get massacred. Yes it can end up 5-6 white mages on one team and 5-6 damage dealers on another depending on who shows up, which is a lot of fun (sarcasm) The only I had fun in Ballista was dropping taru healers in one shot with my weapon skills. (I played as a 75 ranger) I must say, even that gets old.
In closing I'd like to point out, PvP was an after thought in FFXI so it's not really a quality experience IMO. I hope I painted a clear enough picture for you, good luck.
