Just bought - got few questions

AureljusAureljus Member UncommonPosts: 10

Just bought the game, and a Massive edition pack which contains

'The full Secret World massively multiplayer online game with no subscription required.
Issue #5: The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn – A deep and dark mystery investigation on Solomon Island.
Issue #6: The Last Train to Cairo – An epic Indiana Jones-style adventure (including time travel!) in Egypt.
Issue #7: A Dream to Kill – A spy thriller full of intrigue and action in the snowy mountains of Transylvania.
Beginner Weapons – A full set of nine powerful and cool looking starter weapons.
Experience Potions – Five potions which increase the XP gained from killing monsters by 100% for 8 hours.
Ability Point Boost – A timed boost which lasts for three days and lets you earn extra Ability Points as you play the game.
Issue #1 - #4: These content updates were released for free in 2012 and are fully available for you to explore.
''

Now my question is - What other DLC do I need for full satisfaction?

And which weapon should I use mainly for storyline soloing?

I prefer something that does heavy dmg, so my options are either rifle or hammer - any suggestions about this?

Well, issue #9 is directly tied to the storyline progression of the game past that of the initial release. Issue #8 or the first sidestory pack make the step right before where you need issue #9 much easier, but you can progress past that step without buying them.

Unless you're seriously min/maxing every weapon has roughly the same damage output so pick whichever two you want. Yes, two. The game only starts you out with one, but you can equip two weapons simultaneously. You'll note that builder powers (the healing builders excluded) will build resources for both equipped weapons. So you pick at least a builder and one consumer from each weapon as the mainstay of your build. You can also equip passive powers from any weapon branch you'd like regardless of which weapons you have equipped. I'd suggest at least dipping into the fist branch to get lick your wounds (then slotting just one heal talisman) for some self healing and elemental force from the elemental branch because guaranteed crit attacks every 7th hit is always nice.

You don't need to have any DLC to "experience the game fully", per se. DLC's are defined as add on contents. Unless you really love the game, and willing to support the dev team, the main game that you bought should sufficient to "experience the game". Main story line is a blast by itself with other main missions / side missions. However, issue 9 is embed into main story line and you have to have either issue 8 or sidestory - further analysis to get the certification to enter Tokyo, which is where issue 9 takes place at. Regardless, I think even if you buy the new issues every time they come out without the subscriber discount, you would still end up spending less compare to most of the MMOs out there, whether cashshop or monthly sub.

Weapon wise, people tend to prefer leech build (Assault Rifle) since you never die; there's down side to leeching for solo, as the base damage is too low. So basically you may feel that you're relatively safe compare to any other build, you may not be efficient enough. Regardless, most weapon's base damage is the same, except fist/assault rifle(leeching tree)/blood. The reason of being is that they have healing potential. I am suggesting that you go anything else with blade/chaos/hammer(choose one). These weapons are super powerful due to breakdown, chaos outter ring, first skill in "the value of x". These weapons are intended for tanking but they also have damage builders(meaning builder base damage is the same as any other weapons), as well as the resources are on you and you can spend a five resources consumer at beginning of any fight. Further more these weapons carry simple-to-use impair skills for any cast you want to interrupt. There's more reasons for blade/chaos as you will figure out later. Second weapon I suggest fist; it's very good at utility and it can also use for backup healing / downtime healing as you may require that for some missions. Blood or leeching assault rifle would be about the same for fist, but fist brings more utility imo (more impair / more dmg via tear 'em up / easier afflict via bloodspot / etc etc etc).

check out the Decks and go for one which sounds good to you.

I worked towards a soldier deck, rifle and pistol, still my main combo although I am already on almost 100% wheel completion

I just think AR and Pistol rocks

but I also like swords and claws.

nothing is really bad I like everything.. well except maybe the magic casting abilities but that is just me, don't like magic in any games

Interesting enough, I got the same weapons as you, AR/pistol for a single target heavy dmg/and leech for healing, which is going pretty good so far,

and sword with claws for aoe trash, with passive healings.

Anyway - thank you guys for your replies.

Did they ever update those decks?

As far as I know they tend to lose effectiveness once you get to the harder areas of the game.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I would consider any deck to be just a suggestion. They can be nice for illustrating ability synergies. Consider them a starting point to customized more to your liking.

i went with the.......i think its called preacher? blood magic + sword and its a lot of fun but not solo friendly.

Now i stopped playing for two reasons. The main reason is that i need to upgrade my pc to run the game on ultra with decent fps. And second reason is that my preacher build requires group play and i rarely find people to play with. I love the preacher and i will not choose a different class just to be able to play solo, if i cant play what i like then the game is doing it wrong :p

I would suggest have a look at all the abilities.

Many of the skills aren't tied to a particular weapon. I am sure you can create a build to solo. It just may not be effective against all mobs, and that is how the game is designed. No one build does all. The game is big on using conditions and some mobs may require you to use a certain one to defeat them, or be immune to some, or even get stronger if one is used.

I don't know if you have also done the sub option. You get monthly Funcom points that you can use to buy the DLC's you don't have.

I personally went with Assault Rifle/Shotgun. Started with Shotgun/Hammer. Both work well for solo. Assault Rifle/Shotgun is good for both solo and group.

Have a look at all the passive skills. Many are not tied to a particular weapon. You can make a build to suit any situation. You can obtain any of the abilities, no limitation other than AP.

I think hammer lends itself more to a tank role....not sure. Assault Rifle is great for dps and the leeching for heals. (solo and group)

Don't get your hopes up for the PvP. It had some serious issues, not sure if they were ever resolved. Maybe one day I will give it a try again. It sucked being 1 of 3 Dragons trying to fight against 120+ Templar and Illuminati.

My wife plays the AR/Blood for leech healing, and I use to play AR/Elem (old Eidonlin SP? build).  I am currently playing a sword/hammer build that is good for solo/trash stuff.  I switched to it shortly after coming back, was having trouble getting beat up in the issue 8 instances.   Stuff is going a lot better now with it, it has defensive stances, leech ae sword attack, and some ae/single target consumers.  Not fully geared though, have all the 10,1 gear from the issues and regular 10 purple stuff.  Need to get a guild soon and start doing the nightmare dungeons (which seems like it takes a while, and you have all the content needed to do this part of the game).  If anything you can purchase issue 8 to do some of the scenarios and get some of the augments going that the issue started.

Only downside for me is that some fights are a pain in the butt for melee, I miss my AR/Elem sometimes, so I probably will start getting gear for a second build that is more for DPS and not surviveability.

There are quite a few builds you can make, and there is no One True Build -- game is about flexibility in build and adapting to changing circumstances.  That said, here's a place to check out build options -- also be sure to check out the TSW forums.

I liked Shotgun/AR as my fav combo.  Had some good aggro builders, and some insane burst dps when synergized right
