    "nearly 800,000 subscribers"

    Hard to read?

No, I know exactly what they meant, I just like how the actual figure began at under 773K and grew to 775K now the headline number is 800k, This is how telephone works, hence the joke and comparison... next it will be over 800k subs! Maybe other schools didn't play that game in 1st grade :)

Does every post have to be serious btw?

The number started at 772,374 and now it's nearly 800K. It'd kind of silly.

Me neither. It must be all elin.

Tera is still very popular in Asia if you look at the charts there. They measure time played by the month. There are two really surprising things. One is how much more popular FIFA and LoL are than most mmos. LoL eclipses mmo popularity by a huge margin. The other is how successful Lineage still is and it's over 15 years old.

We talk about old school games a lot on this site and how EQ, DAoC, and UO are so blah blah blah blah great. Yet if you took their success combined, Lineage still eclipses that. I really wish NCSoft would open the 3 servers back up in the west again.

Definitely impressive on the Lineage front.

Not surprised seeing FIFA up there. Every world cup I get to see how much of a religion soccer/fútbol really is. Also going by what people themselves say (about it being like a religion).

I'm really looking forward to part two.

Yea there is way too much hate here for the game and I don't understand why. Either you like it or you don't play it. Clearly people care if they go out of their way to hate on it so much, but it makes me sad and the lack of press on the big Western gaming sites really only makes it worse.

So, did Zenimax release official numbers or is this some viral data someone made up?

No official data nor "viral data someone made up".

Data are provided by company making a market intelligence.

They work hand in hand with developers and publishers to monitor Mobile/MMO populations and trends as well as financials. Zenimax is listed as one of the companies they work with, so this is the closest thing we have seen to a release of numbers, even if it's still not officially from ZoS.

    Good for ESO.

As long as they keep the sub up and dont turn into some freemium model I'd be happy. And they add the new guilds and Imperial city ofc.

Reading those massively comments was quite funny too.

Maybe goes to show you just how many gamers  use steam ( I have never used steam, for the record) - the physical copy of ESO has been $30 or less for months on Amazon (sold by Amazon, not some random third party).  It actually went to 50% off just about 1 month after release.

I believe all those games have subscriptions, and a f2p model.  Even WoW can be considered f2p, with their limited Starter Edition.

I would like to see a B2P chart, and see where GW2 is on the list, but i don't think there's enough B2P MMOs to make a top 10. lol.

  • Dreamo84Dreamo84 Member UncommonPosts: 3,713
I'm not surprised. Those are solid numbers but not really brag worthy for such a well established IP. The game really screams B2P to me that would have been such a great system for it. I'd still play it some if it didn't have a sub. I think B2P with DLC would have been a good fit and I'm not knocking the game I actually like it a lot more than most people. Wildstar just seems a little more sub worthy to me at the moment.

I hope they plan some kind of conversion before the console launch. It will definitely be a smash hit on consoles if it is B2P. Especially with the changes they are making.

I for one would LOVE to see a housing system. Honestly if they had housing even just instanced housing with a lot of items to craft and earn like Wildstar/EQ2 I would probably be all about ESO still. Housing is a much more immersive and enjoyable end game for myself. I love collecting things and displaying my achievements.

I'm surprised Tera is doing so well. I didn't like that game. I'm not surprised about the comparable estimates for ESO and Wildstar since they cater to two different markets. I knew from the beginning one would not cancel the other.

WOW is and will always be an anomaly as someone pointed out before until some new technology or something amazing comes out...more than simply improving on what already exists. The action combat model or soft tab targeting didn't affect WOW a whole lot. I don't care how good WOW is still doing...I can't go back lol. Its just so much of the same ol same ol no matter what level you get to...unless something has changed over the last few years I don't know about.

I think people should be happy there are so many choices. To me, if I'm playing an MMO, as long as the server I'm playing on has life...thats all I want. I don't care if it has 50,000 subscribers or 2 million. How many of you play with 200,000 people to enjoy a game? lol

    There Is Always Hope!

I wouldn't go that far yet, SWTOR was still citing and estimated at around 700k-1mil (if I recall correctly) right up until it went F2P.

Does anyone else find it strange that FFXIV states they have 2mill subs and for some reason they arent on this list. Very strange.  with that much its making almost 30 mil per month making that 359mil. which would put them high on that list.
  • FoobarxFoobarx Member Posts: 451
We really should round that number up to an even 100,000,000... it's just as impressive... and just as accurate... and it came from a gaming website too... MMORPG.com!

Funny, TERA and SWTOR are both F2P now, and are doing TWICE as good as ESO, even tho they're several years old.

So yeah, I'll try ESO around christmas. When it's F2P.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Numbers are out by about 9,200,000 surely!!!!

That list is from 2013 so they wont show till next year. Same goes for why some games are above others. If they just launched in the latter part of 2013 they're only using part of the year as income.

Guessing from what someone said earlyer, if your in partnership with them they will  put your stuff up, guess FFXIV aren't.

Tbh i'm not surprised at Tera, the game is a gem, combat, dungeons, the environment, its just epic.  Think where it would be if it had better leveling content? Compare it to the other games on the list, outside of the things i mentioned all it has is intense grinding and not much more, but it's third on the list. Just says it all really.

That chart is kind of misleading in the way that the microtransactions revenue is used for showing how succesful sub based games are. Several of the games in that list can be played without having a sub at all, still the revenue from those microtranctions is used in this chart, Without seperating revenue from microtransactions and subs, this chart is kind of useless to determine success of payment model.

I also wonder if some of those games (Rift, TERA, SWTOR, dont know about the rest) will be listed again with complete revenue in a F2P chart. This would only be fair, not that the charts will become more useful to draw conclusions about payment models. For this you really have to split up revenue from subs and microtransations imo.

This sentence is just laughable based on the chart that is shown:
"Definitely some intriguing numbers, and strong hints that maybe the sub model isn't going anywhere... yet ".

Hey look the throwing random numbers as a marketting ploy news story! Whoo hurray for random numbers with no validity behind them! I'm sorry but I just can't believe any of the numbers. Granted its nice to see Tera being up so high on the list, I honestly can't see it being a very accurate source of telling anything, and the ESO numbers being even more wonky to believe being so early.

I don't feel ESO or other games are failures and I feel they can sustain, but just these numbers, I'm sorry but I don't buy any of them being remotely accurate at all.
