Leading up to the launch of any game is both exciting and stressful for a development studio. The excitement stems from the obvious relief associated with a game finally reaching its goal, but the stress is sourced in the anticipation of how it will turn out. While both could be sensed when I visited Red 5 Studios in Laguna Hills, CA last week, the excitement definitely overshadowed all else.

Firefall is an even bigger mess than ever. This game is the PC game version of the Bill O'Reilly "Do It Live" meltdown.
They can sit back and try to scapegoat Mark Kern all they want. He's gone and the game is leaps and bounds worse. Right now all they're trying to do is save face with investors by any means necessary.
They might as well make Firefall into the sci-fi shooter version of Archeage but I don't think they can even do that. Seems like Firefall was just a big "idea" with all types of technical limitations and excuses to sell in game JUNK to impulse buyers. Look at all the earlier developer diaries with Mark Kern and original game play. Total bait and switch. That's probably why they're still using scripted in game footage from 2-3 years ago in this article.

Actually, I just started playing again after a year hiatus and it's back to closed beta fun days. Only with tons more content.
The last patch was a huge game changer and smoothed out alot of the lingering effects of The Kern Era.
This patch takes away a lot of the bloat that the previous few builds had and gives it focus. I think it's much better than what it was.
It will need more content pretty quickly or the locusts will devour it but it is a far better product than the start of open beta.
Considering how much money was spent on FF and how little was actually delivered, I would say it is the most expensive MMO ever made...
Such is a cost of constant overhauls.
Other than general ranting what are your issues with FireFall? Where do you think the game could be imporived? WTH is a SCI-FI version of ArcheAge?
The latest patch really changed things. Yep, I'm having some 'technical' issues but overall am very pleased with what R5 has done.
Did you play this game from the beginning? Alpha, Close Beta? If no, then you cannot understand those of us who were used, manipulated and abused by R5.

No, I started playing after open beta began in July of last year. The game was still very much in flux and lacking in content. However I saw the games potential and stuck it out. I have spent time within the forums reading the bitter posts of veteran's such as yourself. Most of it was that R5 added more MMO progression systems than some of the shooter audience wanted.
If you have not already done so please try the game now. Most of the overly complex systems have been stripped away in favor of systems that are easy to understand and progress. The new procedural ARES jobs system is also really nice. There is now also a zone devoted entirely to 'organized' OPvP.
Anyway I hope you'll give it a try.
After the huge changes with the patch that came out 1 day ago how can anyone talk like an authority on the state of the game right now. I've been playing the game for 3 years and I can't honestly say if everything they've done is good or bad but I will say they've put a lot of work into this game for this last patch....more than I've seen in the last 2 years combined.
Too many people seem stuck in the past trying to judge it based on an opinion they formed way too long ago.
Yeah, too bad people bought into Firefall for the original beans Red5 was selling, got bait and switched and are now being questioned by people who recently started playing and are still in the honey moon phase.
Do you understand the wars that were fought by players for the betterment of this game? R5 literally chased away an entire base of hopefuls with features the majority did not want for dumb unsubstantiated reasons, and NO content. "Eat your vegetables before you get cake" <- A direct quote from one of the blow hard community managers. Where's all of that now?
This entire "race" to finish the game is about having an obligation to launch before the end of the year nothing more. After 3-4 years of selling dumb ass hats, founders packs, for a "real beta". After nearly 100 million in investor money and God knows how much more from "supporters", this game is not what it was supposed to be. It's a messy typical MMO with leveled areas power creep, vertical progression, and NO fleshed out PVP organized or OW. It's all contrived thrown together bollocks to salvage the mess THEY made.

This is typical of what you see on the FF forums from players of the ancient past. I realized the promise of being a 'pure FPS was not realized and that ESports didn't pan out, but that does not make the game 'bad' now!
First those that are the most vocal within the forums are not the majority. It always amazes me when people assert that the majority of players hate feature X and demand the return of feature Y. Most of this comes down to personal preference, at least that's what I assume when I post. a comment. My opinion is just that and I DO NOT speak for anyone else.
Second it is common knowledge that R5 wasted a lot of time and money developing FireFall. From what I have read the old CEO was a nut job driven more by ego than sound game design. REALLY YOU WASTE MONEY ON A DAMN BUS FOR A GAME THAT ISN'T COMPLETE! That being said there was no 'fight' by the community for FireFall. FireFall was never on open source project with community members contributing code, assets etc. The 'Fight' consisted of some helpful suggestions and simple ranting. Game development is not a crusade nor should it be taken personally. It is entertainment designed to make money and trust me sooner or later making money MUST be the end goal or all those talented people lose their jobs.
Finally, this is 2014 not 2010. FireFall is now an MMOFPS and pretty damn good one. There is vertical progression but in the end you MUST be a skilled players. You should really log into the game, give it a shot and leave 2010 in the past. You might find there is something there to really like.

Or not everyone has decided to hate the game no matter what they do to it now. Nice crusade you've got going there. How many posts did you necro over the last week just to tell people how bad it is. Have you even played the game since it's " launched"

what do you call responding to something 6+ months old just to say exactly what you've said in every other post...including the one I just quoted ?
The first day I logged into firefall all you could do was make a character and sit in the shuttle. The game would crash if you tried to get out. So yes,I've been playing a long time.
The game wasn't awesome back then. It had pointless vertical progression that was trying to be horizontal. It's awesome things to do where anything but that. Stand and watch a thumper. Summon baneclaw or wander around a pointless world taking towers back over, and over, and over.. I unlocked every accord frame and maxed them in an afternoon sitting in front of a large thumper ( now known as a squad ) thumping sifted earth. That really sounds like it would keep people playing for years to me.
Considering how quick you were to judge the new changes, how bad you say the game is now, I'd bet you haven't even logged in. This is just someone that remembers a game that never was and is too closed minded to even try what it is now.
So...there is nothing in between? Sitting in a shuttle with constant crashes and current build?
The thing is, if you didn't like where the game was heading 6-12 months ago, you will unlikely like it today. The direction didn't change, it just got into absurd proportion.
Played Beta a couple of weeks some months ago. Liked the game back then but a lot of things were yeah... over complicated and was lacking content (<beta so I understand).
So when I heard the news FireFall was going to launch in just a couple of days and they did changed a lot of systems and added much more content I hopped in and played for a bit. Now a couple of days later I find myself still playing, even had 2 of my friends join me.
Currently my Bastion is level 18 and I can't wait to visit the other zones and access more content. So yeah keep it going!
