Seems like a very greedy company. Only a few select servers for free users. Literally only one free USA server available. Every server has a 2-5sec delay including the USA server (feels like I'm playing with 500ping). Never had a ping issue in ANY game, definitely not an issue on my part. They're running their servers on 56k or something. Ontop of that, the ping in browser doesn't work

Because free users are the conversion pool and the content for paying users. If free users aren't happy, they don't convert to paying users, resulting in less paying users. If free users leave, the paying users have fewer people to play with, play against or show off to, resulting in the paying users leaving. You know this, Ky.

^ This. I would gladly pay if the game is good, I'm looking for a p2p game as a matter of fact but the fact that there are so few choices of servers to 'try out' and they all lag, turned me off.
They have over 25 dedicated servers for the USA (More West Coast than East) 8 of which are free 2 play servers!
The delay you feel is actually apart of the game as many have begged jagex to remove the game ticks that makes your abilities feel laggy and unplayable compared to other games that have faster click times. If you use revolution mode than things got even worse with the nerf last week which reduced the casting time of abilities from (1.2-seconds to 1.8-seconds) while bugging out abilities and it pretty much takes (a second or two) (after 2-3 abilities that were already casted) to begin casting the ability that you selected.
Type in ALT + ~ (tilde key above TAB) and type in displayfps
It will show your current FPS (which could be your problem if you don't have a decent computer and your FPS is in the red (under 25 FPS) the game runs at a full (60) FPS. It will of course also show your latency as well which mine is usually under 125 at all times. (More than acceptable for the game ticks) If you have a crappy computer and your FPS is in the red it will feel like your lagging - but combine it with the game ticks and the recent nerf.
I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like - either way with legacy mode released very recently and (yesterdays hidden nerf patch) then soon after mini-hotfix buff patch. Jagex doesn't seem to know which game to take the direction into. Everyone voted (80%+) for legacy mode regardless of it being ready (which it clearly wasnt) and everything is pretty f'd up right now in the game. (Balance is crazy) prices are going crazy too. 2H-weapons are overpowered and that sort of thing.
They have made very questionable decision these past years and clearly have no idea which direction to take the game into - but I commend them for keeping the game going for 12+ years.
It's an old game but its still kicking and running and for that I respect them.
ACtually, RuneScape is limited to 50FPS. I don't understand it, but it is.

OP, just counted for you, they have 21 free to play servers, 13 of them are hosted in the USA. I'm in Europe and I get 30-50 ping for the Europe based servers, and 160-190 ping for the USA based ones, so your 500 ping is very unlikely. If it is really that high then there must be some problem on your end.
You should try to download the client, and not to play from browser, you may get a better gaming experience.
Runescape is absolutely not for everyone. I started it in '08 because a friend talked about how hard it was to level and I thought he was being a baby about it. I still am torturing myself on and off to this day, but I do not recommend it to any of my friends and I don't talk to them about it other than broad general statements.
The free experience is pretty poor. Probably worse than SWTOR, because huge chunks of land are fenced off, and you see a lot of interesting things that you can't interact with, worst of all entire skills. Also farming plots and shortcuts and whatnot. Still, if the overall gameplay and exp curve doesn't scare you away, it's worth subbing to see exactly what it grows into, which is a lot of really interesting questing and environments/puzzles/challenges. I still don't see much fun in the actual 'skilling,' or fishing/chopping wood for literally hundreds of hours just to reach the mid 70s, which isn't even MAX(!), but I keep doing it in steps, mixing it up, to meet the benchmarks do to something new, and it's just unique and interesting enough from the themepark MMOs out there that I keep revisiting it.
It's one of the few communities that still facilitates and encourages crap like scamming people, tricking them into death to steal their stuff, looting dead people, PVP with actual high stakes, which can be a good or bad draw.
It just takes so damn long to get to the good stuff. But once you get to it, it's pretty cool, and pretty exclusive.
Yes, this game isn't for any real players! Jagex are just into making more money and lack the resources to even fix their servers now and probably lack the staff levels to even respond to most those trying to get their old hacked accounts back. These fail as most of them were lost before they even brought emails into the system and unless your account did have an original email related to it then with having the first payment copy and all recovery questions etc at the start doesn't matter to them as they consider the hacker that added the email to be the real owner now. This is the overall pattern behind Jagex response aswell.
When you pay to play and try to recover that's no quarantee to your game. There's still the mongrels there that wait until you are tired and not thinking and just trick you into a mistake to rob everything again and again make it worthless playing. Not only that but with Pay By Bonds it means that the game is F2P for most playing and just a small number are really paying to play as the rest just make up the online numbers to make out it's better than it is, google RS3 Bott and then you also see how many of the accounts are still botts aswell and you will realise that most are cheating worse than before and for genuine players this game is more a waste of time than ever before.
